P-40E Warhawk
#1
I am new to the hobby of flying planes, but I know how to fly, and I have always wanted a war plane, but I don't know which plane would be a good first war-bird. I am now looking at the P-40E War-hawk, Spitfire, and the P-51 Mustang. I don't know what to decide on because I don't know the skill it takes to fly these planes. I am leaning more toward the P-40E, but I have not decided, please reply to me so I can make my decision.

Stay away from the P-40 unless it has fixed landing gear, you don't want your first experience with retracts to be with 90 degree rotating mechanicals however, there are a couple of ARF P-40's that come with "air" retracts. World Models just released a new 60 size Mustang with retracts, saw one fly today and was not disappointed, I had two of their 40 size P-51's and have two 120/80" P-51's powered by Saito 180's.
World also has two sizes of Spitfires of which I had the 60 size with a S.T.90. It also comes with retracts and uses a retract servo, they work great. I may get the 80 incher and put my Moki 210 in it, can you say "haulin ass"?
Great Planes, VQ, Hangar 9, Planes Plus, Giant Scale Planes, World Models and many others have warbird ARF's and most of them come with retracts of some kind.

I would say that a sport scale P-51 is best choice and a WM in particular. I have many friends who fly their normal p-51 and their dago reds and love it.
As for the Corsair and the Warhawk... wouldn't recommend it until you can always grease your landings because those rotating retracts are a pain!!! I have the mechanical ones and they have so much slop in them, I could idle the engine and use them as mixers

Stick to the WM P51.
But for goodenss sake, don't front up at a model Flying Field with one and ask someone to teach you to fly with it!!! It would be the same as a learner driver asking to take driving lessons in Dale Ernhardt's NASCAR Racer.

The Kyosho P-40's in the foreground and background are pretty good flyers. The VQ P-40 in the middle can be a handful. I would stick with either WM P-51 or H9 P-51 since the retracts on those are less of a pain.
If you want a really nice P-40, check out the one from [link=http://www.skysharkrc.com/newprod.htm]Skyshark R/C[/link].

It depends on your skill level. If you don't have any stick time on a low wing taildragger, then a low wing sport plane is recommended over these warbirds. Like I said in the other thread, once you are proficient at taking off, flying, and landing a low wing taildragger, then either the Hangar 9 Mustang or the World Models Mustang (.40 and .60 size) would be a good choice.

You can laos try Global spitfire , they are very light , look great if you can still get one , the retail for about $199 and $149 on sale, come with simple retracts . They fly great because thay have very light wing loading . I have the p40 , its a graet plane .
The VQ P40 in the picture has oposite wing washout so becareful with these planes. They will be rerealeased in May with no gear .
Lastly if you want to go cheap and have fun , buy GWS corsair , for about $60 bucks you can dress up the little electric warbird and crash the hell out of it .

The teeth on the VQ P-40 are way too small and don't look menacing enough. If I was going to get a VQ P-40, I would mask and paint my own shark mouth. I believe the general outline is OK. However, I'm not a P-40 guy, so I'm not sure how accurate the VQ outline is.

r KOHLER . IF YOU BUY A GWS FOAM PARK FLYER YOU CAN FIND THEM UNPAINTED FOR $49, PAINTED RANGES FROM $49 TO $69 , NOW WHEN YOU ADD TWO TO THREE H55 HITES SERVOS, RECEIVER , BATTERY YOU WILL PROBABLY RUN AROUND $169 TO $200 TOTAL , SHOW AROUND AND YOU CAN GET IT CHEAPER . nOW IF YOU STEP UP TO THE HOBBY LOBBY FOAM FLYRER THEY ARE GOOD PLANES BUT START AT $129 , YES THEY HAVE GREAT DETAIL BUT IN MY OPINION ITS NOT WORTH $90 DOLLARS MORE . yOU CAN ALWAYS UPGRADE THE GWS WITH BETTER MOTORS AND LIPO BATTERIES .
