Great Planes 1/3 Pitts

OR I've got a well used Byron Pitts for sale $100.00
needs a new lower wing and landing gear.

Engine undecided at this time. Biggest one I can afford that will fit the plane would be the best answer. I am leaning to 40-60 range in size as that will be about the biggest plane I can transport. I would love a Christian Eagle, but I dont see any kits in that size.
Thanks

You would be hard pressed to find a better RC biplane for aerobatics than an Ultimate Bipe. Funny thing is that the full size was not that good, but the model is fantastic. Probably because the full size was developed with models. The main feature of it's performance is that it has very little cross coupling from one surface to another and will come close to a monoplane in most respects. It (most bipes) excels in rolls but is not as smooth in pitch as (for example) an Extra-300.

Several manufacturers offer them in .46 size, but I can not speak about others than the smaller World Models in.30 (really .46) and the larger 1.20 sizes. Had both (one with a Saito .50 and the other with a Saito 1.50) and liked them as good looking, long wearing ships'

Kirby:

Maybe I was off line.
When you said gas bipe, did you mean GAS or glow ?

Sorry, I was not clear. I would love a giant scale, but I cannot transport it. I fly primarily electric, so by Gas I meant Glow.

To us serious electric flyers...It is still swtiching to the Dark Side. Nothing personal...

I am a Bipe lover...

If your looking for a 1.20 size go with the Goldberg Ultimate. You can get it in either a kit or ARF. If you want to use a 4-stroke engine Go with a Saito. If your looking for a cheaper 2 stroke Go with anything in the 90 to 1.08 range. In my opinion a .60 size 2 stroke wouldn't fly it the way an aerobatic bipe should fly. Just my 2 cents.

I can't speak highly enough of the World Models Ultimate 120. I've got a YS.91 on mine. 55" span and around 9lbs weight. Fantastic quality ARF and excellent flier. I even did a review of one in the user reviews section.

Kirby I think everyone's suggestion of an Ultimate is perfect. However it seems they keep suggesting 120 size (and up!). Dave Patrick Models has just released a 40 size of the ultimate in an ARF. Lots of people have flown the 120 size version of the DP ultimate and have nothing but good things to say. I can't imagine you could go that wrong on this plane. I would definately be worth a call to DP to get the specifics of the plane. It's priced at $249 and looks very nice.

Thanks to all;

Quickie, that DP ARF looks GREAT!

Anyone know anything about DP Planes?

Seems that thier Ultimate is recommending a .46, when all other ARFS of similar size and weight recommend a bigger motor?

Hmmm.. WEight and span are similar on all.

Thanks
Kirby

Dave Patrick actually designed the Goldberg Ultimate too. That was in 1990 I think. He changed a few things and recently (last few years) released his own Ultimates. He has a 120 size and a 40 size. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone with more "Ultimate" experience. Also I agree that the Goldberg Ultimate is no 60 size plane. I had a 91 FX and quickly changed to a 120 Webra. Now I'm a happy pilot.

I bought a Global Ultimate Bipe ARF a while back when they were selling for $139.95 or so. It is built nice. I haven't flown it yet.

I was going to install my Webra .50 GT in the nose, but got to looking at the instructions and the anticipated nose weight needed. They (the instructions) mentioned that some were using a Magnum .91 four-stroke and are having terrific results. So, having owned a few Magnum four-strokes previously, I ordered a Magnum .91 for it. I'm still working on the combo.

It appears to be well designed and well executed. I'm impressed. Model Airplane News has a great review online if you care to look it up. Good luck.

Default Bipe Power?

Kirby most of the Bipes that fly well are overpowered. I had a GP Ultimate (40 size) and loved it. However the 46fx I used just didn't have enough to pull it around like I would have liked. I'd say that if you go with the DP 40 size I'd use a 4 - stroke such as a 72 Saito or a YS 63 (that would be sweet!) or a 50-60 class 2 stroke. Whatever the case I think you would be VERY pleased with the flight characteristics of the plane. It acts more like a Extra than a Pitts in most maneuvers and the large rudder makes knife edge flight easy and when you slow it down it doesn't get squirrly like some of the other bipes I've flown.

I have the DP 1.20 size ultimate and it's one of the best flying aerobatic planes I've ever flown. It really makes a good pilot look great and a great pilot look like he's on his way to the TOC.

There service takes a bit to get used to, but on the positive side there are not a great deal of them out there. You may be like me and be the only one at the field with one. Kind of cool in a ARF world.

I also had a Goldberg which I built from a kit and although this was a great flying airplane, I believe the DP is better.

Real fun to fly. Oh go with a four stroke just for the sound.

Mike
