I am in a situation where I might be trading my cermark pitts arf for a hangar 9 cap 232. The cap weighs in at about 11.5 pounds and was wondering how the YS 1.20 or Saito 1.50 would do? I already choose the YS 1.20 over the Saito 1.50 but I will probably be putting the YS on a U Can Do . Will the 1.50 be ok ? It has a MDS 1.48 on it now but I have seen more negative comments about this engine than anything. Looking at the price of a new one I can't see how it could be a quality product to begin with.

i have a 150 in a cmpro edge and came out at 10.5lbs
it pulls it around pretty good with a 16x8 apc but, i wish i had put a 180 in it now.not much difference in price and the 180 has heaps of grunt.
i have a 180 in a modeltech ultimate it weighs about 11.5lbs and has heaps of power.

I will assume that you are talking about the 73" span version of the H-9 Cap?
There is one at my field on a 1.50 that seems to do just fine with pattern style flying. I wouldn't be expecting any modern 3-D performance out of the plane though.

I'm putting a Saito 180 in mine, but that's only because i bought the airplane and then asked about the engine. The guy I bought the engine from has a couple of these airplanes and has a Saito 150 in them. It would probably be enough power to barely do 3D but it depends on what you want to do with the airplane. Saito 150 should be fine honestly.

I am mainly wanting to be able to hover and vertical out of it. Looks like Im may have to use the YS in the Cap and the Saito in the U Can Do. Does anyone have any experience of knowledge of the MDS 1.48 2 stroke? As far as power how does it compare to the Saito 1.50? The MDS 1.48 thats on it does not run reliably so Im hesitant to take the Cap up with it.

I run the MDS 1.48 on a Lanier Extra 77" ARF. This is my (larger) aerobatic trainer. It wants to run on 5% or less nitro with a castor-synthetic blend. I tried 10% and it would choke and die. It has enough punch with a 16X8 Apc for some impressive, if not unlimited, verticals on this plane. And by the way, a MDS takes a lot of break in time on the bench before its ready to fly reliably. For the price, I'm tickled pink with my MDS, it just takes a little patience for it to come in.

1.80 on mine plenty of vertical power and will climb in a knife edge unless show restraint with the throttle(with 15o/o S&W). Does suck the fuel at an alarming rate at high throttle settings.

Thanks for the heads up, both of you. I have only flown it once and that was with the MDS 1.48 on it. I was flying it for the owner and also deciding if I wanted to swap. I was going to give him my pitts with the YS FZ 1.20 but after I read up on the MDS 1.48 I decided to keep my engine and let him keep his. I guess I am going with the Saito 1.50. Having the Twist and the U Can Do with the 1.20 should keep me happy on the 3D side.

Yeah, Widowmaker, that should be a very rich setting to get it started on. I think mine is about 1-1/2 turns out after break in. It likes Powermaster 5% best. I'm sure any fuel with some castor will work.
