OK I thought I had my mind made up to buy a great planes space walker as my second plane. I was at my field and someone recommended I get a WM Rambler-45. My question to you all is how would this plane be as a second plane. I eventually want to move up to a p-51 but I know I am not at that point yet. I know the 4* and tiger ar recommended as a good second plane but I just don't care for the way they look at all.
Best,

The WM Rambler 45 is an excellent 2nd plane. In the purple scheme, I think it is a looker as well as a sweet flyer. I have had many WM kits and the Rambler 30 is my favorite plane of all time!!! The Rambler 45 is also a good plane to start getting use to operating the gear. My friend has one with a O.S. 70 Ultimate (overkill in my book) and it is absolutely to die for :-)

GO FOR IT!!! Hehehe ... its a lovely plane to fly even with a 46 2C. Don't over power that plane, just enjoy it. She is so nice ...

Excellent flight, take off and landing cannot fault it . I have mine fitted
with a 65 four stroke seems just right . Had to glass the u/c mountings
though and had to bend the legs forward a few times but other than that
brilliant.

Oh yeah ... a 65 4C would be just right! I just used collars to hold the retracts pushrods together. I wanna get another for perhaps relaxing flying.

Ok, I think I am sold and that pictures looks great. Do you guys have any suggestions on modifications I should make to this plane. I will be using on a grass runway. I would also like 4 stroke engine recommendations? And if anyone has pictures of their plane in flight with the retracts up I would love to see it.
Thanks for all the help

Sorry could not find the one in flight but I took this when i was
setting up and balancing. I did switch to a side mounting for
the engine as it was easier to work on at the field. the engine
is a 65 ASP four stroke which has been excellent in fact more
realiable than my OS believe it or not. It uses a 13x6 prop.
the only other mod was to change the foam wheels for a
rubber set being a bit thicker helped the set up of the retracts

HI
the retracts while not the sturdiest seem to hold up quite well. I fly off a grass patch
without problems but like I said changing the wheels and putting a bit of glass
cloth round the u/c mounts helpS. They are still ok after about 50 odd flights. Also
the retract servo has to have a good throw with wide arms a metal gear one is
ideal. you will have to cut a hole in the bottom of the wing and mount it from
below if its the size mine is .you can just see it on the pics. I have covered it with a plastic
cowling

Ok I just wen to my lhs and thought I had my mind made up to get the rambler 45. I like and trust the guy at lhs and he is telling me for a second plane I should stick with the spacewalker 2 by seagull 4 star 60 (ugly) or the rambler 30. The issue he has with the 45 is the retracts he feels that they are a real pain (retracts in general). and the fact that they are on the wing they can actully do more damage if I have a hard landing on our grass runway ( he did say if I wanted the 45 he would get it in for me and help me every step of the way but he felt that it was not the best choice). So now I feel like I am at square one I really, really like the rambler 45 I am just consered that I might be fullish to get this plane from what he said. The 4 star is just so ugly other then that I would get it The spacewalker I like but the 45 seems like I would have more fun with and I love the looks of it. Please please help me make up my mind.
Thanks

If you don't want to mess with the retracts, leave the retract servo out, pull the retract pushrods together as far as they will go (fully into down lock) and use two wheel collars to keep them that way. Voila; fixed gear.
If you like the Rambler 45, get it.
OBTW, the Rambler 30 is much harder to fly than the Rambler 45. They are not the same design at all, and the 30 has a higher wing loading. I know, I had both.

To be honest I like the retracts do you think they would be to much of a pain for me? If I make them fixed I guess I can always go back to the retracts once I am comfortable with the plane.

I had the 30 and it was one of my all time favorites... even with a stonkin' Y.S. 63 in the nose, the plane was flawless... talk about wing loading, mine must be one of the heaviest due to the Y.S. even then, it was a perfect flyer and floated like a trainer... but then again... I'm not exactly a beginner :-) Go with the Rambler 30 with a nice 52 fourstroke and I swear, you'll love it!!!

forestroke - you have to be kidding me a YS63? Man oh man ... I had a lot of fun on my Rambler 45 with a SC46, just enough power to enjoy.
rob6894 - just go for for the Rambler 45 and kill the retracts, like JRF says use wheel collars to lock the push rods.

When I did the vert test, it would fly out of my hands at less than half throttle... the only problem is it was such a gas guzzler than I ran out of fuel after 8 minutes of flying... and although a perfect deadstick, it hit a freak rebar in the middle of a clearing and tore the left wing out... :-(

HI GUYS
I tell you all this talk about locking down the u/c is not necessary the retracts are ok
with just a little preparation when putting them on the plane . I fly off a grass field less
than a 100m long and can land it fine and I am no expert. balance it well and it will land
like a feather it has a good glide with no tip stalling.
