I'm assembling a GP Cub ARF and looking for ideas on how to refuel since it has a cowl. Anyone built one using a refueling fitting from Dubro or how about fuel dots? Either way, where and how did you mount these refueling devices? Pix would be great. Would rather not mount anything to the cowl altho it is fiberglass. Any hints?
Thanks....

Thanks for the quick reply and the drawings. Made it easy to understand. Had a couple of more questions. Looking at the 3 line setup it looks like as the tank fills and the fuel level rises, will the fuel get to the carb and maybe flood the engine? Also, I'm going to use a 4 stroke and will try to turn the header in so that the muffler will be hidden in the cowl. I'll have to open the bottom and maybe put on an extension to the muffler. I guess with a setup like that the only way I will know that the tank is full is when the fuel drips from the muffler. is that correct or is there another way? Lastly, I found one web site, Central Hobbies, to look at fuel dots. Do you know of any other web sites that I can look around for the fuel dots? Any brand you have had luck with? Thanks again, Mike, for all your help....

Hi,
I just put a Dubro refueling fitting on the bottom of the fuselage near the edge of the firewall and made an opening in the bottom of the cowl. I also added some epoxy around the area to give it a little more strength. I have had it on for over a month now with no problems.
Take care,
Matt

Fuel will not flood your carb. The pressure will always take the path of least resistence, which in this case is the air vent. Some fuel may get all the way to the carb, but only enough to prime it. And yes, with the muffler inside the cowl, you'll have to wait for the fuel to come out of it.
I prefer Fuel Dots over "Filler Valves" mainly because filler valves are prone to leaks, but also because it never fails that I will lose that stupid little probe that is the only thing you can use to fill it with.

One of my planes has the Dubro valve in it. Works great. The only thing I don't like is the extra plumbing inside the cowl. It can be a bit awkward to reconnect when putting the cowl back on. I've got another plane with the three line setup. So far, I like that better. What I like best is that there is a more direct path between the tank and engine. Less chance of something plugging up or a fuel line falling off. I didn't bother with a fuel dot, just left the fuel line hanging out the bottom rear of the cowl a bit. I plug it with a screw. Can't get much simpler.

Techsarge,
I have 2 GP Cubs, both with 4 stroke engines. I use PSP Manufacturing's fuel dots. (www.PSPMFG.com) They come in 2 sizes and in different colors. I never have any problem with flooding the engine and it's easy to de-fuel with them also. I use a second line and clunk in the tank for the 3 (fill) line, but that is just my personal preference.

Just a word of precaution, although it is true that fuel should always take the path of least resistance, it is still good to be careful. I always close my needle valve when I fuel if I am fueling through the fuel dot on a three line setup. Just makes me feel more safe. Also, prevents fuel from sitting in the glow plug and fouling it up!

you know.. I was just thinking about this.. and if you used a 3rd line to the fuel tank and used a fuel dot, you could carve some balsa in the shape of the full scale's tank cap with the fuel level wire and glue it on top of the dot..just to make it look better
Just an idea.. I'm going to have to do that on my cub if I ever get around to building it

That sounds like a great idea. I might do that sometime. I have FINNALY gotten to fly 2 times this week, first time in quite a while. The wind has been really bad. I wonder if anyone flew during the huricane down at florida?
