I put 6 flights on my Sukhoi before I dumb-thumbed it. Flew allright with an OS61FX, but not much vertical performance.
First flight was a real handfull. Even with carefull building and balancing it was extremely out of trim. Highly pitch sensitive and rolling hard left. After getting it trimmed out I really liked it. Landings were very fast at the recommended CG. I added 3 onces of lead to the tail, and the airplane finally slowed down on landings. I stuffed it after making a stupid mistake on high rates with way too much expo.
Build quality is average.
I've since rebuilt it, and have mounted a supertigre G90. First flight with new engine should be this coming weekend.

I called Hobbico and asked them, they said it is a generic heat-shrink type covering. I wanted to know if it was a brand name, so my repairs would look as nice as possible, but they told me to just order Monokote and good luck.

Scott, I have a os 91 4 stroke in mine and I just cut out the fake engine so that the head of my engine showed plus I put a large hole in the bottom of the cowling to let the air out and to have access to engine adjustments and fueling. I've had no problems with this setup so far. I can say I was pleased with the quality of the kit and other than two clicks of trim my plane flew hands off on the maiden flight. I mounted the battery on the engine mounting box in order to get the cg as listed and I think its gonna be a great flyer after I get used to the plane.

I just ordered the OS 90 4 stroke for mine. The kit is still in the box. This is my first time working with an engine mounting box with holes in it. Do you normally fuel proof the inside of the box and the section inside the fus where the tank sits? I just assumed you would need to cut out most of the fake engine.
This is my winter project. Kinda hard making it to winter much less the end of the month on an ARF build.
Thanks

I did put some thinned epoxy on the engine mounting box but I didn't worry about the inside of the fuse where the tank actually sits. If you look at the instruction manual it actually shows only cutting out enough of the fake engine for the head of your engine to show. You are right about it not being a long project. I had mine ready to fly in one week of a couple hours per evening.

Hi guys,
gorgeous plane to build! mine came together in just over 23 hours. Just a little more to go on the cosmetics so am not going to rush that. I am very particular about cosmetics!
Here are some pics...90% ready to go! Powerplant is a ST G-90 w/ Bisson Pitts Muffler. Havent figured out how to minimize the cuts on the cowl for the muffler exits..any ideas and pictures of your project would be greatly appreciated!

LEDSLED,
I ALWAYS FUEL PROOF THE INSIDE OF MY FUSELAGES. I USE FINISHING RESIN AND HAVE FOUND THIS TO WORK REALLY GOOD. I BRUSH THE EPOXY RESIN ON WITH A FLUX BRUSH AND I GO ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE REAR OF THE WING SADDLE.
I HAD A TANK LEAK ONCE AND RUINED A SIG SOMETHING EXTRA THAT I HAD BUILT FROM A KIT. I LEARNED MY LESSON, IT TAKES A FEW EXTRA HOURS AND AN EXTRA NIGHT OF BUILDING, BUT IF THE TANK DOES LEAK, THE WOOD WILL NOT GET FUEL SOAKED.
I USE THE CHEAP FLUX BRUSHES BECAUSE YOU CAN BEND THEM TO GET TO THE HARD TO REACH AREA IN THE NOSE OF THE PLANE. SOMETIMES I BEND THE BRUSHES AND THEN TAPE THEM TO PENCILS OR DOWELS TO GET MORE REACH.
GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR PLANE.

Eagle - they are similar planes and that is where it ends, I have the Black Horse SU31 which is the same as the Phoenix. I have seen the Hobbico and its very different. The Hobbico looks great but not sure how she flies, bet its better than the Phoenix/BH. The BH SU31 does not do a good KE, it will belly out when you go into a KE.

I maidened mine last weekend with a Saito .82. This plane flies GREAT. It lands even better. I had to move the battery to just aft of the firewall and above the tank and also added 3oz. on the engine box. I am looking for a pilot or considering just painting the canopy black, any ideas? Chris

What a sleeper this thing is. Just got mine yesterday from LHS and paid 139.99 for it. Quality is far better than many of the much more expensive ARFs I've had in the past. I have a G-90 with Pitts muffler and I can't wait to get this plane to the field......beautiful plane....Kudos to Hobbico
Thanks to Flare for turning me on to it.

Here's some of the crap that's going into mine which should be at my door around the 20th. I paid Tower $139.00 shipped. In the pic is a YS 91 with a SU31 shaped spinner, a Futaba high tourque mg servo for elevator, a Russky looking pilot and a 20 oz. Kavan tank that is made to withstand the pressure generated by YS motors.

I have countless hours on this model. I fly it two or three times a week at the airport I work at. I run a Saito 1.00 in it with unlimited vertical @ 5200 ft. At sea level it is unreal, but maybe just because I'm used to high elevation flying.

I won another YS 110 on ebay last night. Should I use the YS 91 or the YS 110?
What do you think?

I'm with ya Rare Bear but, which one? Will the 110 be overkill?
Of course I will do the usual ARF things to strengthen the airframe e.g. firewall-fiberglass cloth & epoxy, paint the inside of the fuse with epoxy cut in half with alcohol, put a carbon fiber rod throught the horiz stab and I have even thought about using wires to strengthen the stab area.
Are there any other weak areas that should concern me?

I had this same model last summer and flew it with an O.S. 91FX. It flew great on that engine and had plenty of power. I flew the model straight into a tree late last season.....most awesome crash I've ever had!! About the only thing I couldn't do was hold it in a hover. It would hover for a few seconds and then fall out. With that said, I think a Y.S. 110 would be overkill for this plane. The Y.S 110 is a powerhouse 4-stroke.
I saw a Funtana (70" w.s. I believe) that had a YS 110, and it flew unlimited....could also maintain a hover. This airplane is bigger than the Hobbico Sukhoi.
For your questions on strengthening the model: I built the model with no modifications to the instructions and did just about everything in the book including some very violent snap rolls. With that said, I would at least strengthen the entire firewall section with some fiberglass cloth/epoxy.

I had a good crash with my Goldberg Sukhoi (kit) about 2 weeks ago. I never really liked that plane. It just never flew as this plane was meant to fly. It was a .90/120 size powered by an OS 120 pumper. the plane was about 10.5 lbs and the OS never really seemed to give it enough power to do much 3d. On the last flight I was about to bring it in and put it away to put a YS 120 on it when one side of the rear stab came off and I was able to still control it minimally but when I slowed the plane down it was uncontrollable and it went in hard. I had repaired the stab from a mid-air crash last year and apparently the repair failed. The thing that bothers me about the crash is that no video cameras were rolling to record it.
I still have the plans but, I didn't like this one enough to get another.
I have 2 of the same video cameras and this year I hope to have them rolling more to record some of the crashes.
I finished my Hobbico Sukhoi but, have yet to maiden her. The weather has not cooperated. I installed a YS .91. I'll let you know how she flies once I get a chance to fly her.

I have two of the Hobbico Sukhoi. one with a OS 91, and one with a Saito 91. The OS performs very well, plenty of vertical, by far one of my favorite planes. The Satio doesn't get the job done on 3D activity. I have tore the landing gear out by overshooting the run way , but went right back with some 5 min epoxy. Out of the 15 planes this one is right behind my Goldberg Ultimate. My only regret is I bought them when the plane first came out and paid full price.
Was the Goldberg version just to heavy?

I been flying mine with a YS 110 for a while and it flys good. To help balance the model, I ran two Hitec hs-77 under the tail for the elevator, and a s9402 for a pull pull setup on the rudder. Reinforcing the fire wall is a must, my broke off when the engine backfire once. The plane hovers at less than half trottle, and will climb out of sight in seconds. For the price, its a great buy A+
