Engine choice for DP Ultimate?
I'm planning on getting a DP Ultimate but am unsure about the right engine to get for it. I have a YS120 that I was planning to use in it, but now I'm wondering If it has enough power. I want it to be able to power out of a low hover with authority. I would also like to have an engine in it that I don't have to cut out the cowling for, but that is not as important. I was thinking about upgrading the engine to a YS140L or a Moki 1.8. Any comments or suggestions?

Engine choice for DP Ultimate?
I have had my DP for three years now and I have powered it with both a YS 1.20 and 1.40L. I started out with my 1.20 and then replaced it with the 1.40 for the start of this season. It flies great with both engines, but I was surprised to learn that I actually like the 1.20 better. Long story short, mid season I pulled the 1.40 for some maintenance and re-installed the 1.20. Since I do not have any lead added for balance I think the lighter 1.20 gives me a better balance point and the power difference is NOT as great as I would have thought.
Now back to your question. I don't think either motor pulls out of a hover with authority. BUT with such a light wing loading you don't need quite as much power to avoid scaring everyone including yourself.
You really can't beat the sound of the YS four-strock and torque delivery combination with this awesome airplane. I also think the YS consistent power delivery makes it easier to perform 3D type flying. When you need just a few clicks of power it's nice to know that it will be delivered each time consistently.

Engine choice for DP Ultimate?
Oh one last thing. I have a moki 1.8 and 2.1. The 1.80 would power out of a hover with authority...
My suggestion would be to go with the 1.20 which you already have and then once you get a feel for the plane and your flying style make a decision on some other power choice.
IMHO.

Bottom of cowl can be a problem due to angle. I just cut my muffler tubes down short, mount cowl then add extensions made from tune pipe coupling material

I'll be putting an MVVS 1.60 on mine with an 17x8 or 18x6 prop and a BCM pitts muffler. Should work well despite the slight weight penalty.

I have a Saito 150 with a 16x8 APC prop. Lots of power. No added weight, but I am getting in a TNT aluminum landing gear to replace stock one. Hopefully, the balance won't change.

I'm usually pretty good at reading between the lines but you guys make it tough to do. I'm thinkin I might just go with the YS 120 that I already have despite what you guys say. I'm thinkin it might be a good engine after all.
I got it on eBay and its still "New in the Box" so, I could get my money back out of it to get something different if I wanted to. But seeing how you guys have such a soft spot for it, I might just have to rethink that. I just figured since they were discontinuing the YS 120 that it might not be the best engine for the job. You guys have me leaning toward using it again.

I didnt know YS is Discontinuing the 120?!? I think they may be working on a new 120. Even if they are discontinuing, I dont think you'll have any problems finding parts or info on it, Its such a popular engine!
I have a YS 120 on mine Love it! Sounds great!

YS 120 DP Ultimate
I have had my ultimate for 2 years now and love it with the YS-120 it has good power here in Denver even when altitude density is at 8,000 ft. most of us here in Denver use Magnum Fuel #2 and can run a 17 x 8 APC @ 9200 - 9400 RPM
2 friends have YS 140's on there's and they have unlimited virtical
One vitue of the ultimate is that it does not even care if there is a 25 mph crosswind it will groove right in and land easily.

I read that the YS 120 is being replaced by the YS 140 Sport. I think I read that the frame is the same size, It has more power and runs well on a wider range of fuels.

DP ULT
My DP Ult.Was a dream to fly on a YS 120 except it was weak pulling out of a hover.Installed a Saito 180 without any mods and wow! It flys just as great and has unlimited vertical. It does a great really flat inverted flatspin. The draw back is the 180 likes fuel. You will need at least a 20 oz. tank. Dave

Engine choice for DP Ultimate?
There is a Ultimate at my LHS on consignment. I noticed it had the RCS 1.4 on it. The plane is in mint condition with all servos 605 hitecs, pull-pull rudder and elevator, duralites, and the RCS. Don't know how it flies but if I had the cash it would be mine.

Engine choice for DP Ultimate?
Seems like I remember someone posting here that their RCS 1.40-powered DP Ultimate was a little lacking in the thrust department while swinging an APC 16x8. It would be better with a 17x6 (more thrust) but it would be very slow.

How do I say this
I like slow and thrusty.
Still, the decision would be based upon what I could get the flying weight to be.
Thank you for the feedback I am getting. I wish I could get some solid information on what peoples planes are weighing in at and with what equipment.
I am not stuck for an engine, I have several glow engines that are perfect for this from a YS 140L YS 120SC and a OS160 FX
But, I am leaning more and more to gas now that I have tried it.
BTW, I am curious, how much is the one on consignment ?

Balance w/ OS 1.60?
To anyone using the OS 1.60 in this plane, how did your balance come out. While I'm waiting for my servos to arrive, I thought I'd figure out where they should go. Will it balance with the servos in the stock location?
Man, I really hate to cut into that cowl. It's too pretty to mess up.

Then dont mess up
Just cut little by little until you have a nice opening around the engine and muffler. You can get it down so that there is only a small opening for the sylinder head/valve cover.
