Hi Chaps,
I've just been given access to a good sized grass field with uncut grass and am looking for a suitable robust hand launching plane in a .40 size as I have an Irvine .40 in stock.
I'm thinking maybe a Cambrian Fun Fighter although I'd prefer an ARF if possible, or something a bit 3D ish.
Any ideas please?
Cheers
Pete

If you had a light (as in balsa built up) .40 with
a fairly strong engine, this can be done. It's more
difficult to do this by yourself. We fly off of sod
fields, so we either go fairly big, .60 & up for ROG,
or go down to the .25 size planes for hand launch
with no landing gear.
I have made a catapult launcher to aid in launching
our .25's, so I'm sure you could build one large enough
for what you need. I built my launcher with a cord
release, so that I can launch by myself. You can get
some idea's about this on the scale combat website.
I hope this helps!
Good Luck!

I hand launch my .40 size profile 3D planes regularly. One of them actually was designed with a non-steerable tail wheel, so hand launch is expected. A good one to get is Accel Hobby Katana 40 profile. If you get good enough, you can hand catch it too. You need a plane that has a sturdy fuselage section above CG, so you can grip it securely before launch. So high-wing design is out-of-question. Goldberg Extreme 330 is good too. Goldberg Extreme 540 does not have enough fuselage handle area above CG to get a secure grip.
As the Accel Katana 40 is the lightest of the bunch, it will be adequately powered by Irvine 40 swinging APC 11x4 or APC 11.5x4.

I Have hand launched a hangar 9 twist 3d before, me and ghee-grose was playing around with our gws slow stick and thought[sm=idea.gif] let's hand launch his twist! i worked great, full trottle and just toss it at a shallow angle and it was airborn, now the trick is to hand catch it.of course with engine dead

Thanks for all the ideas guys. I love the idea of a Katana profile, but I don't think they're available in the UK. In fact I don't think you can get many profiles over here at all.
Maybe I'll have to look at ordering one from the States.
Thanks again guys.

Hey, maybe I should clarify. I "vertically" hand launched my Katana 40 profile. Sometime I do it at full throttle and have it rocket out away from me. Sometimes I do it at half throttle so it starts hovering next to me.
As far as the hand catch, I've seen someone hand catch a power-glider when the engine is off. He basically flew the landing approach toward him, and caught it over his head.
