piper j 3 1/4 scale cub
Hi guys,
Looking for a 1/4 scale piper j 3 cub, kit or arf. What would be engine recommendations, either glow or gas, for this plane?
I will appreciate if some one can guide me, thanks
Jamal

I'm not Cub expert but I'm aware of the following 1/4 kits and arfs
Sig kit (2nd best from what I've ready) - standard and clipped
Balsa USA Kit (also has a Super Cub) (the best for scale)
Ikon N West (a "builders" kit)
ARFS
World Models - both standard and clipped wing - very nice but expensive
Hanger 9 - out of production - standard wing only
Global - have never seen it - standard wing only
That's all I can think of off the top of my head.
Each manufacturer has their own engine recommendations.
Good luck.

GP kit too
I am not a cubbie, yet, but i Have been eyeing Great Planes .40 sized fabric covered arf.
I have thouroughly read the manual, and it seems to be a great kit.
The kit is covered with coverite, and has an authentic look to it...
I have compared this manual with some of the other cub kits
Such as Hangar 9's, Thundertiger's and Sigs.
The great planes cub seems to be a bit easier to assemble from what I can see....
but like I said, i have not purchased the kit...... yet.

Where are you located? I have a Hanger 9 1/4 scale 100" cub that I will sell you if you like.

I'm buying one of those - it will look nice next to my T-Craft.
Damn....

H9 Super Cub
The vertical stab does not look scale on the Super Cub to me. Looks to me like they are using a regular Cub vertical stab on the Super Cub model. Someone else take a look and let me know if I am seeing correctly. You may have to print the assembly manual to see what I am talking about. I really hope they haven't made this mistake as the Super Cub vertical stab is a much better looking unit than the standard Cub and, of course, this would make the H9 model pretty much non-scale. Hope I am looking at this wrong.........

I have the original 100" cub and you are right. It looks like they just repackaged the original and threw a new cockpit window and cowl and a few other things and called it a Super Cub...
Of course, it is close enough to make it work. Considering there were several variations of the Super Cub depending on the end user.

H9 1/4 Cub
H9 is reintroducing their 1/4 Cub. There is a picture of it on page 78 of RCReport's Nov. issue. They say it has been re-engineered with better material selectin and all wood contruction. They say it is lighter than the first version and can be flown with even a .61 size engine, but a 1.20 would do much better. Just says it will be available shortly. And no, I am not getting this mixed up with the Super Cub.

If you read the online pdf manual, it actually says there will be two versions of the new re-introduced Cub - the traditional yellow J-3 and the PA18 Super Cub. The main differences, besides the obvious paint scheme, are the different cowl, added wheel pants and the "skylight" window on the Super Cub. It's very nice of them to give us the choice.
They do stress that these are "Sport Scale" models. Besides, 100" wing span isn't exactly 1/4scale, is it?
Another curious thing is that on the front page, they recommend .61-148 2stroke, 1.00-1.82 4stroke, but on page 4 they recommend 1.08-1.48 2cycle, 1.20-1.80 4cycle. Seems to me like they need to get their story straight.
Okay, here's another curious bit of info. Great Planes has just discontinued the Top FLite PA18 Super Cub kit. I wonder if these two events are related...

Either way, as you say, it's a nice addition to their lineup. I always wondered why they discontinued the 100" cub. The plane flys great and does not demonstrate the typical hard takeoff of most model cubs.
Great plane!

I realize that most people didn't like the performance of the G23 in the H9 T-Craft (I put a YS140 in mine).
Do you guys think the super cub would fly fine with a G23, or should I be seeking more power.
Just trying to get my ducks in a row for when this plane comes out.

J-3
Jeff-
They are replacing the G-23 with the all-new G-26. Its suppose to turn the same prop as the 23 up to 800 more RPM with only two more ounces of weight. Exact same dimensions as the 23. Has a new muffler that has two pipes pointing straight down for easier exhaust routing. Price will be a tad higher with a street price around $300. Shows a pic. of it in RCReport. ( Nov. )

Jeff, the G23 will certainly fly the plane. But if you intend to do anything besides puttering around the pathch, or the occasional loop, I'd go with something + powerfull. I have a Saito 150 in my kit-built Sig 1/4 scale Cub and it's a perfect match IMO.
here's a pic of the yellow version From Cheif's web site: http://www.chiefaircraft.com/Models/Model.html
