Default H9 T-Craft and first gasser - looking for your thoughts

I posted this in the giant engine forum as well, but figured I might get more reponses here.

I've got the H9 1/4 Taylorcraft. I was planning on powering it with a YS140FZ, but have been giving more thoughts to a gas engine due to fuel costs and flight time. The plane should come out around 15 pounds dry.

I am very comfortable with the YS 4 strokes, but have never owned a gas engine.

After searching and readying posts on this forum I've narrowed it down to these engines.

Taurus 2.4/2.6 (I've heard the 2.4 isn't available anymore)
BME 44
FPE 2.4

I'm not into 3D - but want good aerobatic power. My friend has this plane with a G23 and it does not have enough power. Many have recommended the MVVS 1.6 or RCS 1.4.

All the local hobby shops swear by Zenoah - they said if a G23 wont do it for me to put a G38 on. There claims are the Zenoah engines are super easy to handle, kinda set and forget, with great reliability. Everyone here mentions how heavy they are.

I'd love to hear your recommendations for an easy handling, quiet, low vibration, powerful engine for this plane.

Thanks in advance.

I know someone who had the G38 in it and liked it. Then his son talked him into putting an OS 120 4stroke in it and he likes it alot better. He says there is an unbelievable difference.

I will be puting a Taurus 2.6 on my Taylorcraft. The g23 can't get out of It's own way and are to heavy and rough running!

Default Just a thought

What about a MVVS 1.6 gasser. Size, weight and power are just right for this plane.

Both MVVS 1.60 at 2.4 lbs and 2.1 at 3.3 lbs will do nice large aerobatics at around 15 lbs plane weight. The 2.1 has slightly more power and is a bit heavier, but flies circles around a zenoah 38

Thanks for the thoughts guys - I ended up getting a great deal on a BME 44 so I'm going to try this engine.

Thanks,

Jeff

A plane such as this can be more enjoyable to some using a g23 because there is not a ignition battery to charge. This keeps things simple and relaxing. I know you said you got a bme, I'm just posting this for anyone else who looks. The g23 is capable of knife edge flight in this model. Also a plane such as this doesn't seem to get hurt to badly by extra weight with the huge wing. There are atleast 3 g23's in my club and all perform flawlessly and are super easy to start. The g23 will be an easy bolt on project since the plane was designed for it. I personaly own caps and extras for extreme flight where power is needed, for me this plane doesn't need excessive power, its a fun plane to do all those gracefull low power manuvers.

Maybe my friends G23 isn't broken in or he's using the wrong prop, but his will not knife edge the T-Craft.

I flew his and while it felt very scale you had to manage your energy all the time. I don't think I'm a good enough pilot to not have some extra power on board to save me.

I kinda wish the G26 was out - I was originally thinking G45 for ease of starting and lack of electronic ignition, but I'm going to take the leap into purpose built gas RC engines and ignition.

I can always fall back to my YS140 if I can't deal with this engine.

Default Prop for G23

What is the best prop for the G23 on this plane?

Thanks
