GP Super Sportster 40
Anyone have experience/suggestions with building the Super Sportster 40 from GP? I fell in love with the ARF and bought it tonight....
I plan on using an OS .46 FX and JR radio....

I had the older ARF version - the one with the plastic turtle deck.
What a nice flying airplane. You'll have a lot of fun - they slow down very well and are very easy to take off and land.

I had the old Sportster 40 ARF as well and yes, it was a great flyer. It makes an excellent first low winger.
I also have the new ARF still under construction. The only beef I have is that you might have to add a ply spacer between the firewall and your engine mount if you're using the 46fx. This is needed because the prop shaft doesn't extend far enough from the cowl to allow the 1/8" space for your spinner. Not sure why GP didn't design that better and save you the hassle. I also built the GP Extra 300 .40 size ARF and had some parts fit problems there too. Otherwise, the Sportster ARF is a nice one...and definetely an improvement on the older ARF. I put it aside though because I couldn't resist the Sig 4* 60 ARF.
You'll like the way that Sportster flies though!! Good luck.

I had a couple of the older ones also and after I got the glue issues worked out (arf's) they were great little flyer's. I then took one and covered it in yellow and put the black tiger stripes on it made the ailerons bigger went to dual servo's on them and made the rudder bigger. Wow what a great little plane that turned out to be it would make a great knife edge trainer, with the bigger rudder it would knife edge as long as far or as low as you wanted. (R.I.P. sniff sniff) Stock they are very relaxing to fly you will like it. Oh the one I modified had a Super Tigre G-51 on a pipe for power.

I am flying the MKII ARF currently and also running the .46FX. Using a 12x7 APC prop and it flies great. No problems at all with the assembly. Motor mount is a bit tricky to deal with due to tight quarters but not overly traumatic. When all said and done, it balanced without any weight added (just like all the planes in Model Airplane News!! ) Lateral balance was even dead on. The only small problem I had was the wing pushrods would hit the wing bolt plate in the fuselage. I could have bent them forward before installing the pushrods but the thought never crossed my mind.

I built this for my 12 yr old son. OS 46fx and I dressed it up with red checkerboards on the tail and underside of wings. What a great plane. He has been flying it now for about 8 months and of course he takes it to its limits! I takes everything he can dish out. The only flaw I found was the engine mount problem above and the wheel pants will come back and damage the coating under the wing with any kind of hard landing. But this is one of the definite winners out there.
