My edge is 68.2" wingspan and the hinges are pre- installed. All they need is a little CA. The plane is very beautiful. The covering is great. I am probably not going to use all the hardware, I need to go with some lighter stuff(landing gear, ect). Sorry no pics, I don't have a digital camera.

Follow the instruction: (for image uploads click reply or quote icons in any post above) and it should work. I know, it's not intuitive. One would click on the 'image' button but that is not it. Should be, though

I just got mine from my LHS and out of the box tonight.....awesome quality....the control surfaces seem large enough to 3d, however I think it might be heavy.....it is built pretty solid....by the way.....wingspan is 68.25 inches.....the manual is correct.

According to the manual:

WS 68.25
Area 753 sq in
App flying weight 8.4-8.8 lbs (Horizons site is light!)
Length 60.6 in

It has a way small fuel tank though...probably around 10 ozs.....no volume listed at all.

Well,,, the quality is getting better for sure. Way to go Seagull !! Don't worry,,,, it'll build light . (Glass the firewall and the gear block.)
The new Superstar has the same hardware and tank. The pre-built tank mount really works well. I was concerned with tank size too until I made my first flight. (Saito-150 ~ 16x8 APC) I set my timer for 10 minutes but found I had more like 12 or 13 minutes of flight at high throttle settings. I also worried about the hard mount fuel tank configuration foaming in flight and making lean runs. Not a worry. Observed the tank on tail stand with the wings off and didn't see any more foaming than when I've built them using 3"inch thick foam tank mounts.
I've been very happy with my Superstar so far. The 150 flys it very well and the whole thing weighs far less than my other 120 sized planes. From your pics I can see the new Edge-540 is built up in the same manner.
The only real problem I've got with Seagull/Phoenix/Black Horse models is the two piece, alum alloy ,molded landing gear.
They don't give on landings and they come loose alot. (Even with lock-tight). The only thing I ever liked about them is when they do break loose on a hard landing they swing back seperately away from the plane keeping the wheel pants from flipping up and poking holes in the wing.
Save some extra weight and go with carbon fiber landing gear. Graph Tech makes a gear that will bolt right on your new bird.
My new gear came yesterday. "Pics below." As you can see,,, my wheel pants have already taken a beating using the old alum gear.

Hurry and post your flight reviews !!!!

Does it have a wing tube or a one piece wing?

It has an aluminum wing tube. The wings are hold on by 4 nylon bolts....whats nice is that they can be put on without tools! The wing bults have finger tabs so you don't have to fight with allen wrenches or stubby screwdrivers in the fuse!!!

three of us had their edge r40 and the only problem we found was that we all put 120-2 strokes in them. wing loading was a little high, gave them undesirable flight characteristics, all three of us changed to 100 or 108 to lighten up became much better. fly at 2300 ft so we tend to put a little more power then called for to get good 3d. not bad for the dollar spent, another edge 540 that found was even better was the cmp540t

Looks like you have ahead start on yours. I'll start mounting the servos and electronics tonight.

Looking for an aluminum motor mount instead of the plastic one that came with the plane any suggestions?

Actually, mines still sitting...all I did for the pictures was slide the wings on and stick the stabs in their slots.......I haven't glued anything yet Mine is essentially just pulled out of the box.

I was thinking the same for the mount...I am not sure if I like it.....I might get a replacement and redrill the firewall....

Keep us updated on you progress.....I hope to find time to work on mine Saturday......

Does this Edge use dual elevator servos? My Futaba 6XA tx doesn't support that. What would my options be?

Thanks for any input!

I just picked up my new Edge 540 and look forward to following this thread. I was wondering what you think of the suggestion in the instruction manual to use all digital servos. While I use them on my helis I don't know if I want to make that sort of investment in servos for this airplane. Also how much torque do you suggest the servos should have for this airplane. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Ernie, yes it has dual elevator servos......simple fix though. You can get a y-connector that has a servo reverser intalled on one of the y's.....voila....problem solved. Actually, this is what I will be doing as well since my Futaba 7C does not support dual elevator servos. I can use a mix, however the trims will only work on 1 of the elevator servos, not both.

Zsnugz, I am not going to use digitals......no need. I will not be doing anything that requires the precision. I will be using standard servos on the 2 elevator halves, and high-torque metal gears on the ailerons and rudder. The ailerons aren't extremely big, so unless you aren't doing any high speed passes at full control surface deflection you could probably get away with standard servos on eveything.

I just happen to have the high-torque metal gears laying around so why not........

Hey, thanks for the input! With a Y cord, wouldn't one servo have to be reversed.... or not?

I think the hitec 475 servos would be fine. Fairly high torque and Karbonite gears. What do you think?

Thanks again,

Ernie

Yes one would have to be reversed. Check back to what I wrote- "You can get a y-connector that has a servo reverser intalled on one of the y's".

Those Karbonites should work just fine........

Thanks for the quick reply. I have put mine together but am trying to decide on the motor and other equipment I will purchase. I am considering the Saito 100. As for the other equipment I have a 9C that has the capability to run the dual elevator servos.

Following this thread with interest.

The 9c is real easy to do the dual elevator servos with....I have one but the RF module is fried.......

The Saito 100 would work great for IMAC type flying, but fo a little more weight you could get a Saito 125

I originally thought about a Saito 100 in mine....I don't usually overpower my planes.

BMiracle, sorry I missed that you said "server reverser in one of the Y leads. Are there any downsides to using that kind of a reverser. How in the heck do they work..... can't be as simple as reversing two of the three wires can it? I know some servers can be reversed internally and one fellow had that done for a couple of bucks on his order from Servo City.

Thanks again,

Ernie
