Fellas,
I'm finishing up my new 1/4 scale H9 Cap (my second) and was wondering if anyone has successfully installed a smoke system.
I currently have:
OS 160 w/bisson pitts and a Perry Fuel pump -- tapped the crankcase through the upper left bolt when looking from behind the engine.
I already bought the smoke injector nipple from bisson and am waiting for it's arrival in my mail box.
So... my two options are using the TME Deluxe smoke pump system or going with a pump that uses crankcase pressure (like the B&B one). Which one is better?
Second question, can I run a t-line on the crankcase pressure outlet line...one going to the fuel pump and one going to the smoke pump?
What size fuel tank should I use for the smoke oil? Is 16 0z overkill. I have one laying around in my workshop.
Both the fuel tank and the smoke oil tank will be directly on the CG.

I am deciding whether to put a ZDZ 40 or a Saito 1.50 in my 73" H9 CAP. I have heard you have to put a ton of lead in the nose with a lighter engine like the Saito. Any experiences here?

i had a YS 140 with a krumschied muffler grafted on, 2 x 1200 mah nicads for power, and a D cell nicad for a remote glow.the tanks were moved over the CG and the servo rails were moved rearward to allow the tanks the space.( the rear rail possition bacame the front rail possition. all the batteries were right up behind the firewall . the smoke oil was pushed in using the same pressure from the motor that pressurises the fuel tank. no lead needed. 17 x 8 APC. fun, but not copious amounts of smoke.

Boatguy_1,
I have a saito 180 in mine. I put 6 oz in the nose to hit the balance point. After the first flight, I moved some gear back to shift the balance. If I wouldn't have added the weight in the first place, I wouldn't have had to shift anything.

i have 2 caps also, im building my second as of right now. i have an o.s. 1.60 in my first and it is fantastic. there is not a trick that cannot be done with it. the second cap may be blessed with the zdz 50rv. i know it is a lb heavier than the 1.60 o.s., but i can use it for larger planes like the laser 2000 by kangke. the os is about 3.7 hp and swings an 18 x 8 scimitar prop. the second cap may have its wings torn off with the 5.7 hp zdz!!! the 40 should be just fine with being one pound heavier than the os 1.60 and adding 1/2 hp too.
the h9 cap 232 is an awesome plane and h9 should get their heads outta there butts and remarket it.

I haven't had direct experience with the H9 CAP, but JeffC and I have flown the Yellow Aircraft CAP (similar size to the H9), Extra, and Sukhoi - all with smoke systems. We've had great success with the TME system. Just make sure it's priming well before take-off. I'm not as enamored with the Perry pumps for smoke.
Use the biggest possible smoke tank. You'll never have enough smoke fluid; it's used very very quickly. We use 24 ounce fuel and smoke fluid tanks.
We have a bunch of video of the TME smoke system in action at:

Boatguy_1,
I installed a Saito 150 and it needed 18 oz ( 6 sticks @ 3oz each)resting on the motor mounts to balance it at the recommended CG.
We balanced it inverted on custom made balancing eqipment. I also had two other guys helping me, and they each have over 20 years of experience in RC.
So I sold the 150 and just ordered a ZDZ 40 this morning. If you do some searching there is a guy by the name of Dick Hanson who has built three of these H9 caps with ZDZ 40's. Sounds like it is a really good set up. I bought the zdz because I can use it in other air frames after I'm done with this cap.
As for smoke on this combo, on paper, I think it will be too heavy. But if it flies good for me I might just try it!
Hope this helps.

Dick Hanson is in my city and I spoke with him last Saturday. I am going to scrap the Saito 1.50 on the H9 CAP and put the ZDZ40 I already have in it. He has built 4 of these planes with the ZDZ40 and they work well. He sent me some pictures of the firewall and mounts he has made for them. If you are interested send me a PM and I'll reply with them.
I will mount the Saito on a DP Ultimate instead. I now have to sell three engines and a plane (all new) to get the cash.
If you know anyone looking for new MDS .78s (one with a Pitts muffler), a OS .61 FX with a Pitts and a Kraft Staudacher 300 NIB,
let me know.
