Christophe,
From what everyone says here, the 1.60 twin will be adequate power for it. Tower is selling the 1.60 FX (non-4 stroke) combo and that engine appears to be MORE than enough.
From the looks of the fuse, the fuel tank is positioned in the spot where any cockpit would go....

Has anyone had the gear mounts give out/ brake lose on landing and cause the plane to belly skid. My mount rails broke clean away from the wing and caused a bit of destruction to the under side of my plane.

Gotsky,

Did you read the previuos entries by Dick Petit on using blind nuts instead of the screws?

This was not an issue of the bolts. My entire wood block came out. It looks as though it did not have the proper amount of adherent/glue when it was built. Just wondering if it was just an isolated issue or one that has been documented previously. When I fit the piece back in the wing it dose not seat all the way against the area that I would assume it was meant to be glued to

Would have advices private individual on the assembly?
I read that this plane which it was delicate to pilot, especially in the attérrissage of which thinks of it you if you have this model.

I have just read that it was necessary to cut the place of the reservoir to place him in the heart of the fuselage when we go up an engine OS 160 FT
it is compulsory?

Here are the pictures of the Fuji-24 installation. I added 3/4" to the exhaust stacks. 16 oz. fuel tank, 5/8 spacer between the motor and firewall..

Teamscalepilot,

It looks like the Fuji is a nice fit. I, especially, like how you finished off the three exhausts.

Two questions. It looks like you have two tank vent lines. Is one of them for filling the tank? Secondly, what kind and size of prop is that? It has the color of an APC prop, but a different shape.

one to fill, one to for overflow, that's a master airscrew 18-6 wood covered in flitemetal. I wanted to reshape the prop tips to look like the hamelton standard prop but ran out of time.

WOW this is a beautiful plane!!!

I decided to jump on the bandwagon and get a Staggerwing it will be delivered tomorrow afternoon. The Saito 170R looks awesome and I'm sure it will sound sweet too. But I'm not sure it will have enough power. I'm thinking an MVVS 35 IFS with the radical mount and 7mm stand offs will fit perfect. It should be about 6.02" to the thrust washer. It's 4.66" inches from crank center to the top of the engine and then you have to add the spark plug. The engine head is Red and it will just barely be poking through and the cowl won't have to be all hacked up. The engine is only 3.64lbs including ignition module. Should be able to turn a 18x10 prop around 7500RPM. I still need to pick up the retracts if anyone has bought them and is now thinking twice let me know I might be able to help take them off your hands. I think I might have to get the LADO-tech electric actuators for the retracts to give them a little more scale appearance going up and down.

L8Rz,
Mike K.

Test flew the Top Flight Staggerwing on this past Saturday. I am using a Fugi 24 for power and was quite impressed. The plane weighs right at 20 pounds with 18 ozs of that being ballast. It was airborne in a couple hundred feet and I did not have full throotle. The only change I made to the engine was to richen the low end . I didn`t need the flaps fore I had a 15 mph headwind. Was using fix gear but have now ordered the retracts. I would say this engine and plane are a good combination.

Check out the Lado-actuator thread, seems that orders are not being delivered, mabey that has changed - they are a neet concept if delivered!!??
We fly a Saito 170 in the Kange 96" Monocoupe with power to spare. Super sound, It is an awesome engine if adequate for the staggerwing. Only down side is that it is a thirsty engine, but is improving as it has more run time.

WE had a Saito 180 in the 80" World Models P51 with air retracts etc. and it flew with authority, 180 had excellant power but again used a lot of that 15% Nitro stuff so we switched back to gas and also saved the mess of glow and problems with paint etc. that goes with the higher nitro content. Just my thoughts.

I put the Saito 180 in my Staggerwing. Almost done.

I mounted the engine at 90 degrees, rather than inverted. This meant that I had to make a two small openings in the cowl for the rocker covers. I bought the Golden Knight rocker covers (only $14) so they will blend in with the colors of the plane.

I will post the pictures soon.

Apalset,

Have you flown yours yet? I'm curious to see what you think of the 170R.

Here in Norway it has been raining since October so I haven´t been flying at all for too long. I have mounted the Saito and I am getting about 7400 rpm with a 16X8 prop. so I am not that impressed. Have been running the engine for about two gallons and I am using the Keleo-ring. The engine with plane will pull about 5 kg now so I am not sure how this will work. I am not sure if I am using the right fuel, it might be a little too thick or if there is something else I am doing wrong.

Not to insult your intelligence - but make sure you have a 16x8 on the 180 and not an 18x6. You should be getting around 9000 rpm with good 4-stroke fuel. Do you have muffler pressure to the tank? Is the needle leaned out after warming up?

Navy Flyer,

I beleive that Apalset is running the Saito 170R radial. I have everything I need now to start on construction except for an engine. So many good engines out there, but still leaning towards the radial. I too have a Saito 180 in a World Models P-51. That would certainly be plenty of power to spare for this one I would think. I suspect that the 170R would fly it more to scale speeds but probably not with much power to spare. Any thoughts out there on the radial?

Ah, ok - somehow the discussion seemed to go to the 180, so made the 'assume' error.
