Default World SuperStunt 40 power options...

Howdy folks,

Starting assembly of the SS40. Its been about 18mo. since Ive been flying and I wanted to start back with something inexpensive before I put any of the more expensive/reactive planes back in service. I have an OSFX46 and a Magnum 91 4 stroke available for use. The Magnum has about 9oz on the OS.

This is a BIG 40 size plane, in fact I'd call it a 60. Does anyone have any exp. with this airframe? I would prefer the 4 stroke power for this type of plane, but I want to keep the "floaty" characteristics.

Thanks
Mike

Go with the Magnum .91. Mine flew with plenty of power with an Irvine .53, but the plane really came alive after I switched over to an ASP .75 two stroke. Wing loading is still lower than many of the so-called trainers.

The down side is that you will need to get more prop clearance for the larger engine. I converted mine to a taildragger so a 13x6 clears the ground with plenty to spare.

Yes, WM really should call the pair Super Stunt 60 and 120, instead of 40 and 60. I have both.

Yeah... Prop clearance.

I've been examining it for a few hours now, and i was thinking about maybe using a 3 blade prop. Just for fun.

The Super Stunts 40 is a very popular plane in our club, and very competitive in fun flies. All are being flown with .40's and .46's. Guys like to float them around in the breeze. Mine has a very strong SuperTigre .40 on it and gives me a lot of fun. to go with a much larger engine will mess up with the plane's best flying characteristics.

OK,

I think the 46fx will work for this. I have "power" planes, but I want this to be a floater. Somehow, I have more fun with this type of aircraft.

Thanx

I should mention that I converted my SS40 to have quad flaps, just like the larger SS60. With CROW deployed, it'll stand still in the air with a 10mph wind.

My SS40 gained a little more than 1/2 lbs going from .53 to .75 and I didn't notice any change in its flying characteristics, other than now it hauls ass on the verticals. 9 Oz. is not going to change the way this plane flies drastically. What it does allow you to do is mount rudder and elevator servos near the tail for more positive control.

OTOH, from what I've seen it fly with a .53, I have no doubt the plane will fly excellent with the OS .46FX. With such a light airframe, this plane is a barrel of fun anyway you power it.

I'm going to mod the flaps too, I was wondering how long to make the aileron and how long to make the flap ?

I like to consider my options before I start, so I'm still undecided as to the motor. I fit the 91 on the nose and it sure seems heavy, but as construction progresses I'll see how it looks.

Any weak areas in the airframe? Its light, but its solid.

Thanks for the info...

I split my aileron/flap such that the ailerons are a little longer than the flaps. I'll try to remember to snap some photos when I get home tonight. Don't just cut the stock supplied aileron stock though. Buy new aileron stock that are at least 2" wide, and butt the flaps right up against the fuselage with no more than 1/8" gap.

Don't worry too much about which motor to use. You might do what I did and go with the smaller engine first to make installation simple and balancing easy. Then, if you're not satisfied with the way it hauls, then drop in the big block chevy. The supplied motor mount makes it very easy to adjust for different size engine. Just be sure to prep for the 4stroke throttle linkage before you install the fuel tank. That could be as simple as an additional plastic tube running to near where the 4stroke throttle arm would be.

As for weak spots, don't worry about it. Even though mine cracked right behind the wing when I dorked it a little too hard on one landing (okay, other people would probably call that a crash more than a landing ), I still think the airframe is adequately strong without being overbuilt. Plus it wasn't too bad and the open truss frame fixed up nice and easy. If you try to reinforce the "weak spots" as a preventative measure, you'll invariably move the weak spot somewhare else. Keep it light to fly right. Mine took a lot of abuse without failure.

Here's my taildragger Super Stunt "75" with quad flaps.

This plane could easily handle more power. The H9 Ultra Stick is very similar in size and folks power it with engines like the Saito 100 wtih no problem.

Here's a close-up of the wing. Those are solid balsa 2" aileron/elevator stock, hand-picked at the LHS for lightweight and straightness. I kinda wish I had gone even wider than 2". The plane flies very well as is with more than adequate aileron authority right down to stall speed, but I'd bet 2-1/2" or even 3" would make for a wild ride.
