Default Woops wrong wing dowels in my ultra stick

When epoxying in my dowels for my Ultra Stick 40 I accidentally put a smaller size dowel in one of the holes. The other one is the dowel that came with it. I have heard a lot of bad things about the wing dowels on this plane and I would like to know the best way to reinforce given that I have one dowel smaller than the other. I was thinking about adding some plywood behind the former with holes lining up with the original holes (one would be smaller). And then maybe adding some triangular stock behind that. Any suggestions?
Thank you very much.
John

Cut the dowels off, drill them out, put in the correct size. Or better put wing bolts in.

Don't re-engineer the wing mount. Use your hobby saw (you do have a zona saw don't you) and cut the dowells off flush with the leading edge. find the center of the dowell, drill a small pilot hole, and then drill the dowel out using the correct size bit.

Find a piece of brass tubing that will slide nicely over the small dowell. Then, epoxy the brass tubing into the hole in the former to create a "bushing" of sorts. Whaloh!

I agree with cutting the incorrect dowel off, drilling out and installing the right dowel. On mine, I hardened the holes in the former and the dowels with thin CA. Flew it hard for about a year and never had a problem. Just be sure the CA is fully cured before you put it together the first time or you may not be able to remove the wing. I think the dowel problem resulted from a less than snug fit that allowed a tiny amount of movement. I built up thick CA on the dowel until it was snug, then sanded it until the fit suited me.

John, what engine are you going with??? You WILL come out nose heavy on the US 40, and 60 size one too. So move the servos back in the fuse where they should be (I can tell you how), and/or move the battery waaaay back inside of the fuse. You don't want to wind up adding a ton of lead to the tail. I have a Saito 82 on mine, and put the battery way back in the fuse. Still had to add lead to the tail. On my US 60, I moved the servos back where the should be, going pull pull on the rudder, and a nice short rod to the elevator. With the stock setup, the pushrods they usually put in the kit won't slide in the housings anyway! Good luck, write me at [email protected] if'n you want,

Ernie

Thank you folks,
Ok, so I'm still undecided which route to go, replace dowel or add brass bushing. (the Whaloh method if you will)
If I was to replace the dowel..... do you think I should go one drill size bigger to remove some of the surrounding epoxy?

And after I do one of those.....what do you guys think of my idea for reinforcing the former? (Putting another piece of plywood behind with holes lining up and then some triangular stock behind that). I like the idea of doing this with the Whaloh method because it would give the bushing that much more bite.

Ernie,
I balanced it yesterday and it came out fine. I was really surprised because I had read like you said that it would come out nose heavy. I am using a TT Pro 46 with a muffler that looks like the one below but I forget who makes it. It gives the TT more power and I believe it is lighter.

Thank you
John

John, amazing that your balance is good, way to go! You've defied gravity. Did your stock pushrods work smoothly? Maybe they've upgraded them. Do you have the newer US with the balanced rudder?

Ernie,
I suppose I did defy gravity. I am using replacement 2-56 pushrods because the stock ones were bent. I noticed that they are a softer metal so maybe they are a little lighter. They do not have the smoothest movement but I think they'll be ok.
My US is about 3 years old and it doesn't have the balanced rudder. I am just getting back into the hobby so it has been sitting around for a few years.

Does anyone have anymore comments on the wing mounts?

John

Nope, not whizzed about anything. I've been really good lately. Just wondered what whaloh meant. Thought he might have meant Viola' but wasn't sure. Don't presume to judge what I might have meant when I asked someone else a question.

John, the problem with installing brass (or alum) bushings in the holes in the former, to make them smaller, is that your smaller dowels are possibly too weak because of their size. I think what I would do is simply to drill out the small ones like stated before. If you don't want to do that, you could find a larger size alum or brass tube that fits OVER your undersize dowels. Sharpen the end of it, put it in a drill, and spin it over the small dowels and let it cut it's way into the wing a ways. Then pull it out, add epoxy, and glue it over the small dowels and into the wing a ways.

Good luck, let us know what you do. I have the older US 40 too. Mine wants to pitch upwards REALLY bad with rudder inputs. I think it is because of the strong triangular shape of the rudder. On my US 60, I have replaced the rudder with a rectangular shaped one.

Ernie,
Much appreciated, I hadn't thought of the strength. Thank you for the detailed instructions, I'll let you know how it turns out. I am planning on flying it tomorrow (Saturday).

That looks like the GMS muffler, same as the Tower muffler. No baffle in there, so a little louder but more power. It should pull that plane nicely.

Now when you fly along straight at about half throttle, hit the rudder back and forth and see if it pitches up badly like mine. Also, knife edge was difficult with it wanting to pitch to the canopy side.
