Spreadsheet of 25cc gas (1.20 glow) airplanes
I'm hunting for a good ARF to learn gas engines on. I'm targeting a Brillelli 25GT. Here's what I've got so far. Let me know what planes I'm missing and I'll up date the spreadsheet. Man, looking for a new plane is fun.....
.jpg version of spreadsheet is attached.
Model Manufacturer Rec Engine Price Weight Wingspan Wing Area Wing Loading
Su26MX Goldberg .60-.90 299 9.5 72.5 949 23.06
Velox RII OMP .91-1.00 319 8.5 68 965 20.29
Tumbleweed 3D Atec .91-1.40 314 11 69.25 1122 22.59
Giles 202 CMPro 1.08-1.60 169 10.3 72 943 25.17

Interesting, Consumer Reports kind of approach. Did you do a similar spreadsheet on the engines? If so, I'd like to see it.
You are clearly limiting your search to semi-scale aerobats. In that type, you are missing the World Models, Cermark and Lanier offerings, to name just a few. Try going through the Advertisers Index of any of the model mags and look up the websites of any vendor that looks promising.

dudes cmp looks alot like giant scale planes. giant scale were really crappy planes especially their fiber glass fuselage planes. i had their p26, the nose snapped off on landing.

Another good one is the Mayhem 3D from Sig. Depends on the type of plane you want. Also the Funtana 90 or the Dragonlady from Modeltech.

the CMP planes look like Giant scale planes offerings, because gsp sells some CMP kits. So do many other dealers. Some of the CMP kits are built nicer than others. The Giles in question is a very nicely built plane - I 'm just starting on building mine, so I havent flown it yet - but there are several threads on RCU about th plane, and most flight reports are very positive with everything from an OS 1.20 4 stroke through poco242's Brillelli 25cc gasser.
There's also a Goldberg Tiger 120 about to be released - I bet that would be a great airframe for a beginner 25cc gasser.
Also the Pacific Aeromodel Gee-Bee Y 1.20 flies insanely well on a 40cc engine, but the 25GT would fly it pretty nicely as well.

My 26cc gasser is going in a goldberg Pitts M12. I also like the GP super chipmunk for that size motor but I'm going 35cc in that.

Good information to start with, but only if:
1- The advertised weight of each model is the same as what the plane actually weighs with your engine of choice
2- The wing area is really the same size as what is advertised.
In my experience, manufacturers list "typical weight" (but they may be using a really light engine), and list wing areas that may be different from what is actually calculated on the production models.
Those two numbers can throw the wing loading out of the ballpark!
A nice lightly loaded model powered by a .90 two cycle will fly a lot different from the same model powered by a 25cc gasser for obvious reasons
(like an additional 2 pounds of weight in the nose!)
But, bottom line, you're off to a good start. Now to get those engine performance and weight numbers from somewhere...

Pettit,
I completely agree. Unfortunately, I'm a slave to the manufacturer's published specs. I selected the weight from the middle of the AUW range listed. I also plan on using a 25cc conversion with EI. The EI versions of those engines are quite light compared to the equivalent version with magneto. You may also notice that the spreadsheet is sorted by price.... So I'm leaning CMP Giles 202 (140) or CMP Katana (140). Thanks for the feedback. I may add 25cc conversion engines to the sheet with weights and comparative 2-st / 4-stroke engines and their weights.

If you want a plane just to fly around with that will do basic pattern stuff, the Sig Four Star 120 would be a good choice....however you would have to build it as it's not available in an ARF.

what pettit was leaning toward, and I'll point out - his signature mentions a good source for R/C plane and engine reviews, no punches pulled, and they seem to stay really un-biased toward any particular brand regardless of who is buying ads.
