Default H9 Cub 80" Floats

Do you guys have any suggestions as to which floats to get for the H9 80"? I figure with as many of these planes floating around, someone has found a good combination.

Thanks!

Great Planes offers a set. It's been so long since I've had a set for my Cub that the older supplier is out of business.
If you're not aware, the formula is the float length is 75% of the planes total length with the step 1" behind the planes cg. and that should leave a nose projection of about 3 to 4" in front of the prop.
Hope this wasn't repeating something you already knew?

I just flew the hangar 9 80" cub on floats this past weekend. I installed the Great Planes Fiberglass ARF float set, without the ventral fin. You have to make some modifications for the rearward float gear to mount to the fuse, but no problem at all. The plane has a YS .63 on it for power, and the combo flew very well! I installed the floats so that there is 1-1/2-2 degrees of positive incidence in the wing compared to the top of the floats, and the step location lined right up without modification. There was plenty of power, nothing crazy happened at power just above idle at level flight. Very enjoyeable. Here is a picture:

I really appreciate your giving me the formula for calculating float size. I'm still hoping someone will reply who has actually used a particular set so that I can get a heads up on mounting issues, etc.

The GP floats (40 size) are perfect for the H-9 Cub. Whether you go with the kit floats or the prebuilt ones is your choice, just a trade-off of more $$$ for the prebuilt vs time and work for the kit floats.

I have the kit floats on my H-9 Cub. I fiberglassed and painted mine, and with everything flight ready except fuel, my Cub weighs 11 pounds. The most difficult (??) part of building the kit floats is soldering the wire framework gear legs. I used a flex rod from the air rudder to the water rudder, but you can also mount a mini servo in the float if that's the way you want to go.

The prebuilt floats are probably lighter than the kit, but the wire gear is completely finished. OTOH, the prebuilts are less durable than the kit, I think. I fly my Cub with a .72 Saito / MA 14-6 prop and can take off at 2/3 throttle, cruise at 1/3 throttle. The pendulum effect of the floats adds a ton of roll stability to the plane, and it is a hoot to fly. As a matter of fact, heading for the lake in about an hour.

Guys....I've currently got a Saito 56 for power...Should I dare ask if this is enough power with floats? I love the its scale like attitude with this power plant. You know what I'm getting at. I've got an OS 70. should I swap it?

If you go with the prebuilt floats, the .56 would probably be okay, because of the weight difference, but it would definitely be scale flying, not much extra power. If it isn't too much trouble to change it, I'd go to the .70. You can turn a bigger prop, and you'll have a decent margin of extra power to dodge the bass boats if you fly on a lake like the one we fly on. I don't know if you have your .56 mounted sideways, but the .70 would be almost hidden if inverted.

Never made it to the lake today, I called my buddies and the wind was too blustery--- the tropical storm was just passing by (Alberto).

ilivitup,

Go to the seaplane forum and you will find lots of info there. Talk to 'Seaplane'...he may build you a set or at least know someone who will. Balsa covered foam is a great way to go. No concerns about leaks. You will find all kinds of info on setup as well.

Let me know how it turns out. I will be doing the same to my cub in the future.

Good luck

Jawsmom I've got an Saito "60" twin that I'm going to put on my GP Cub, (ARF) I hope that it will fly it scale W/floats. Should be very close with the floats. I'm a Cub lover from way back and I have many different sizes. What do you thin k about this engine combanation? Heres an image of my 33% BUSA Cub, which is still getting detailed. I have a set of BUSA, plans, that are are blown up to 55% (238" or 19' WS, and 12.5' fuselage) that I'll be starting in about a month after I get the Lumber in. I plan on doing a build thread when I start.

The full scale Cub in the background is the one I'm scaleing this 33% from. Bob
