I just got the yellow monocoup. Trying to decide on which engine to put in it. Really do not want to cut the cowl. Does the Saito or O.S. 1.20 four stroke fit without cutting the cowl? Not sure how Kangke got the plane to balance with the SK80, sounds like the plane will end up tail heavy. Thanks for any input or building tips. [8D]

I had planned on putting my Saito 1.20 in my yellow Monocoupe... Even inverted it required a low of cowl cutting (almost all the through the bottom) ... Way more then I wanted to destroy on that pretty cowl... It also left the prop hub a good inch plus out in front of the cowl... I went with a Mag .91 4s I had laying around... Much better fit... Couple of threads around here state the .91 will fly it just fine... Here's hopping [8D]

Hey gents, can anyone tell me what the dimensions are in the cowl? I have a saito 90 twin that I just inherited and am looking for the perfect plane to put it in... I know everyone is thinking cub, but there are like bellybuttons around here. I need to know with the saito mounted horizontally, if it will fit, because i dont think the plane will look to scale with heads cut into the cowl. My other question is balancing. Do you think the extra weight of a twin will be a washout for the tail-heaviness? I am a little worried about weight.
Thanks in advance.

ironcross - with the 91, did you have to cut the cowl at all? thanks!

BTW, the cowl design looked to me like it wouldn't work very well to cool the engine, so I did a little modification.
If you look at where the arrow is pointing, you'll see a heat exhaust vent. All it took was two saw cuts and some scrap wood. Since it was into the firewall, when I glued it up, I used epoxy and some glass cloth. Since the firewall was only two layers of liteply, I wasn't worried about making it overly strong as the firewall certainly wasn't.

For the life of me it just doesn't make sense to go through all the trouble of making a vacuum formed windshield if it's not going to fit.
I had a 80" Great Planes ARF Cub, Kangke needs to take notes from GP because that windshield fit like a glove.

I have had my yellow monocoupe for about 30 days. The plane is easy to fly although you have to be careful on take offs it wants to torque role. On my maiden flight with the saito 100 the plane went down on take off from torque rolling. The plane survided the four foot high crash except for the wing tube that got bent. I got a new tube and have flown it a number of times with no problems. I just ease up on the throtle and let her get some speed and then lift her in a scale fashion. She is a beauty and the landings are very predictable with nice touch downs. I know that in its day the monocoupe was a very fast plane but I think the Saito 100 its probably a little too much, although I rather have engine weight rather than lead. The plane balanced perfectly with out any weight with the Saito 100. i highly recomend it...

I now have four flights on my Kangke Monocoupe with a 91 4 stroke Thunder Tiger. I am not impressed with the power of the 91. I have to be very careful not to stall. I tried to put my Saito 120 in it today and think it almost impossible. The Saito carb is twice the size of the 91 and hits the motor mount. My 91 Thunder Tiger is low on compression and is turning 1 k less than a friend OS 91 4 stroke. There is somthing wrong with the values as when I put oil in the cylinder the compression does not come up. I am going to get this fixed before anymore flights. The motor is almost new.
I moved the struts up from the landing gear to just where the landing bolts in with a metal strip. It looks like a hard landing would be hard on the wing.

Do you guys think that a saito 170R3 will be too much engine for the yellow, 1/5 scale monocoupe? the way I understand it, the 170R3 is about the same power as a 120 four stroke. But I thought I also read somewhere to resist the urge to over power this bird. I was running a RCGF 20CC gasser in it, but I am about to let that engine swim with the fishes. What a hunk of crap that motor is.
I already have the radial, so I wouldnt have to buy it. I was thinking of selling my radial as well as my other nirto and going all electric. But MAN the sound of that radial is just wicked though.....OHHHHH, What to do, what to do.

it's a nice alternative to a scale cub too. I think it flies better than a cub also.
