Two things on the camel, It came to me without the tail gromets for the guywires and I'm using a 91 magnum and its still tail heavy even with the pound of lead they give you.
I filled the compartment with lead just to make it even, I will then put the nose back together and it will be right.

I started to assemble mine last night. I spent only 3 hours and the wheels are on, the engine and cowl are in place and the wings are mounted (no servos yet)
I am using a Saito 100 and a hole was needed in the cowl to clear the cylinder head. More air circulation too.
Looks like its gonna be about 8.5 pounds, if I have to use the lead weights, which I probably will.
This will be the smallest IMAA legal plane I have ever done.
It may fit in the back seat of my car fully assembled! Those rigging wires look to be a real "thrill" to install and remove.

Mine came without the brass tail grommets also. I made a call to Hobbico yesterday and they said they would send them right out.

I flew mine again today, much better after I put the extra 6oz of lead right in the cowel. Mine also didnot have the tail grommets and Horizon sent me a new wire kit and it was missing the grommets in it also, so I cut the ones attached to the wire already sence I had two sets.

I am planing on putting a saito 100 on my camel .Has anyone done this and does it require much more lead to balance the plane? Also was wondering if the stock engine mount will work or will I have to drill new holes in the firewall? Thanks in advanced ....... Louis

Lou, If you start with page one of this post, some of your questions will be answered. There are at least two other threads about the Camel going, check those out. Or start a new thread if you don't get the info you're looking for here... seems like at least a half dozen Camels building or flying already some use wieght, some mentioned cutting for fits, etc.etc....Cliff

If this plane is anything like the many other 60 size hanger 9 planes it will be designed around the Saito 91/100 and you should have no trouble fitting it. I am sure you will need lead however (which is supplied with the kit) as this thing has such a short nose

I have a GMS .76 in mine and it flies it with authority, alot faster than scale with alot of vertical. A Saito 100 is not really needed, a saito 82 would be a better choice and still be plenty for the Sopwith. The problem with the 100 is the prop size, This plane is hard to handle on the ground as it likes to loop on the ground. The bigger prop means more torque witch in my openion, harder ground handeling.

Exactly what do you mean by "tail grommets"?
The brass fittings that bolt to the tail surfaces?
The crimp tubes for the cables?
It looks like I have everything that's necessary to add the wires.

They are flat pieces of brass that you bolt through the tail surfaces and then you connect the short wiresto them.
My model came with the wires already assembled and crimped but the kit did not have the wire gromets (8) in the bag.
I called hanger 9 and talked to teck support and they said they were out of them but when they came back in they would send them right out no charge.
baileyblazer, 90 minutes south of rienbeck airport. Magnum 91 and still added more wieght to the front.

I am about to start building my Sopwith Camel which arrived today and have considered the Saito 91/100 or YS110 but am also considering using an RCV90SP as it would fit perfectly within the cowl and swing a scale prop with the 2:1 reduction gearing - any comments out there on this installation?

As regards Camel colour schemes, the most colourful Camel was the 1000th off the Rushton assembly line in Lincoln in 1918.
Here is a pic of a beautiful model of that particular bird.

Got mine almost ready to fly...old Saito .80 (high compression ) that I recently re-built...
Waiting for the "grommets" (or whatever ya wanna call 'em ) for the tail wires to arrive...
Looks like I might have at add a little more wt. in the nose though?
How does it fly with the C.G. in the recommended place?
Edit: Let me re-phrase that...
Has everyone who's flown it done so w/ the c.g. in the recommended place?

You DO NOT want to be tail heavy in this plane The tail is way over sensative, and makes flying and landing really touchy. If anything put the weight up front, I added the weight box and then added 6oz in the cowel as far forward as I could. The battery is all the way against the firewall. I ordered a heavy prop nut and hopfully can take out some of the weight in the weight box. It does fly much better now. Watch the ground looping on take off.
