Default GP Giant Big Stick

I am looking into getting my first giant scale plane. I want something simple so I can get used to running and setting up gas engines before I build something. I am considering the Giant Big Stick (redundant name) or a Giant Super Sportster. Would a US 41 be a good match for these? Also, what servos do I need for these without spending a fortune?

Thanks,
Brian

fireman7875 I'm putting mine together with an "Ryobi" 31. I am using hitec 645 servos all around. Any servo with 70 oz of torque will be OK. In fact, you can use standard servos for the ailerons and flaps. The US 41 will be more than adequate for power. Bob

Ditto to what Bob said. I reviewed this plane last year with a Fuji 32cc gasser and that was a good power match, so a US 41 should be plenty of power! This is also a great plane to cut your teeth into gassers with.

In case you haven't seen it, here's a link to the review:

What is the overall length of this plane? I see conflicting info from Tower and Great Planes. The length may be a deal breaker for cause it might not fit in my truck!

I just measured mine and it is 63 3/4 from the firewall to the longest part of the rudder. Bob

Fireman,

iI have a good friend that is flying this on a Brillelli 40GT and it is a good match, so you US 41 will be a good power plant for this plane. He is using Hitc 745's in the wing and JR 125's for the rudder.

Is everyone using the stock CA hinges on this plane or are you upgrading to Robarts or something? I have used CA hinges on nearly every plane I've had with no problems but I haven't ever had one this big either.

I believe the plane is heavier than my big boy and I used a G26 on mine. I would build it a taildragger for sure because that would save some weight. I'm using HS 475 (4) on the ailerons and HS635s (2) on elevators and HS645 (1) on rudder. 2000mHa battery gives me plenty of flights in one day. I was at a flyin last summer and saw the rep fly it and he amazed me with what he could do with it. You wont be flying real fast so those servos should be plenty strong.

I've heard that they have a glide ratio (power off) of a man hole cover, is this true?

No.

There is no reason for this model have a bad glide ratio. All it is is a Super Sportster with the wing on the top, which usually increases efficiency because of compression in the fuselage/wing junction.

I have a G45 on mine which provides rocket like vertical at 15lbs. Regarding it being a man hole cover, at 15lbs, mines still a floater. Having the bigger engine swinging the larger prop even at real low idle speeds, adds to the floating issue. Originally the plane had a G26, and it was a piece of cake to land. With the bigger engine, reinforce the firewall by putting three screws on the top and bottom of the firewall like GP put on the sides. It's a strong plane that can handle the power.

With a BT32 engine installed on the stock motor mount and no spinner, mine is 72" from prop bolt to tip of rudder.

50 flights so far with the CA hinges and no trouble at all.

Not true. They do have a lot of drag and slow down quickly when the power is removed, but glide well.

I'm glad to know there are so many people flying this plane without issue. I can't wait to get one!

I don't think you will be sorry. I have never flown a Stik that had any bad characteristics. Also, the bigger airplanes just fly better than the smaller ones. You put thest two together and you have a winner! I am in one of the windier parts of the country and even in a 12 mph crosswind, the giant stik makes you look good during landings. I had to replace the stock wheels with harder rubber ones because I wore the foam down to almost nothing doing so many touch and goes .
