RE: Hangar 9 1/4 Scale Piper Cub ARF???
Check out this H9 Turbo Prop 1/4 Cub I spotted!!! It's a custom made cowl. Can't remember what motor it's running but he's using 5S on an Eflite Outrunner.
I'm going to be purchasing a 1/4 ARF. Gonna recover and install flaps. I think I'm going to put in a G26 but only because I'm going to put a huge prop on it for Tundra use.

Fly mine with a Evolution 26 and can take off at just a click over 1/2 throttle and has more than enough power. Weighs just a bit over 22lbs and I use a either 17x8 or 17x6 prop. Tons of fun, can fly almost 40 minutes on the stock tank! One of the guys in our club loved the way it flew and how well the engine ran, he has the exact same set up himself now and loves it too!!!

RE: Hangar 9 1/4 Scale Piper Cub ARF???
Ahhhhhhh! I am starting to get frustrated. When I first started the RCG 26 it ran fine for 15 minutes then sputtered and died. Could not get it to start and stay running after that. I then disassembled the carb and cleaned out. I am pretty good at this stuff and I followed all the instructions. Put back together and tried AGAIN. It did run at half throttle for a few seconds and died. Started Lo speed setting at 1.25 and Hi speed at 1.50. Opened each another quarter then half turn without success. Changed and gaped new plug to 020mm. I do get a small spark. I am using a fresh 2300mAh NiMH pack. How big of a spark should I be getting? Do I need a certain size fuel line?
I am getting ready to disassemble again.

I sense the frustration that you gassers have. Here's something I do that you might consider doing yourself someday:
1. I take my Cub to the field.
2. Bolt on the wings.
3. Set the Cub on the onramp.
4. Turn on the eFlight Power160 (Power 110 would do just fine tho).
5. Head down the runway and fly for about ten minutes.
6. Land.
7. Recharge battery packs and insert charged packs.
8. Repeat #3 thru#7.
9. Do the whole thing a couple of more times.
10. Remove wings.
11. Place in car and go home.
12. Repeat the whole schmear in a day or two.
That was all tongue-in-cheek of course and not meant to insult anybody. But I was a "glow/gas jockey" for forty+ years and discovered how to REALLY enjoy this hobby. Unless, of course you're one of those who just has to fiddle around with mechanical stuff.

If it dies once you get to about half throttle lean out the high needle half a turn and try again.

I dabbled in electric for a bit and still have a few that I fly but nothing sounds like a nice 4cycle or gas engine in a big cub.

Tex, How big of a spark should I be getting? does it matter as long as I am getting spark? I have an older CH ignition system from a 58cc BME. Should I try that or is it even compatible?
Thanks,
Joe

I have never looked at the spark, make sure your ground wire is getting a good connection. Play with the needles a bit, don't keep tearing down the carb. Although frustrating at times, there is a rainbow at the end. Mine did the same and it was due to a rich high needle which was set at factory. My G20 won't run on factory settings anymore, but really sings. Patience my friend.

Can you see me smiling . I set both needles at 1 turn and went from there. Engine started on choke but would not stay running. Adjusted Lo 1/4 turns open a few times till it ran without choke. Adjusted Hi end wide open and it runs like a champ.
Still have some minor adjusting to do but I will save that for the field prior to the first flight. We have a few gasser pilots at the field who can help me out.
I also noticed that the ignition connection was loose so I fixed that so it won't happen again. I think you were two for two Tex.
I balanced the prop but these things do vibrate. I have locktite on everything but one of the stab support rods broke at the stab. I will have to come up with a fix for that and also replace the other three.
Thanks for all your help Tex

I took the springs off the landing gear and replaced them with o-rings. I couldn't find #216, so I used Danco part No. 96735, #18. The dimensions are: 1 3/16" O.D. X 15/16" I .D. X 1/8".

RE: Hangar 9 1/4 Scale Piper Cub ARF???
I am shooting for first flight next weekend. While breaking in the engine one of the tail support braces broke at the eyelet. I am either going to call HH for a replacement or figure out a new support system.
Question,
Are these supports struts on the tail surfaces required for flight or just decoration?
Has anyone else had these break on them? How did you fix?
Thanks Guys,
Joe

Joe, if you mean that the eyelet pulled loose from the shaft, simply clean it up a bit and solder it back in place with a little silver solder. (Happened on mine, too).
I don't believe that they are just for decoration so better fix it.

Great idea Fishkillbill,
I took your idea and added to it a bit, using 9/32" long pieces of brass tubing on the screws to minimize wear during flexing and 3/8 dia washers. The screw threads won't be good for the neoprene. The flat on the washer is to facilitate installation of the o-rings. Turn them around when done like shown so sharp edges don't touch anything if you care to. No room for lock nuts so you will need a drop of loktite on the nut.
I am using 16 o-rings total, 8 per strut to give me the stiff ride that I like. Any mooshier and a "robust" landing can destroy your prop (among other stuff). At 4 cents each and at least 50 flights (I have 85 on them so far), I can afford the 2 1/2 bucks that it will cost me.

Nope, broke right at the end of the eyelet before the start of the shaft right where the bend would be. I read elsewhere in the forum to use Sullivan Flying Wire which I now have on order.
Thanks,
Joe
