planejaw,

I have used 17x6 Xoar's on my DLE 20 and it runs well. In your opinion, does the 18x6 seem to load it down? The application I am considering is the GP PT-17 arf, as yet not test-flown. I am looking for good thrust and a scale speed.

Thanks in advance.

I've used Xoar 18X6 props on DLE-30's. Plenty of pull and not too much residual thrust at idle.

I've done quite a bit of work on the H-9 Cubs, so I'm fairly used to working with them. Thought I'd post my two most recent photos. Wings are painted, just need to install the aileron servos and epoxy in the aileron hinges. Painted the struts, those come next, then finishing up the cowl and throttle servo.

looking good! i like that shade of blue
It's just Rustoleum, Ultra-Color deep blue and orange. Had to have something different than the usual Cub yellow. It also goes on the Solartex quite well and with careful heat, you can still shrink up anything that shows a wrinkle, simply by putting the iron "under" the area you'd like to shrink. Still best to go over the entire structure with an iron multiple times, tightening any seams and possible wrinkles before you paint. I've also got "pinked" strips on all seams, ribs, corners, which helps to hold things together and prevent any water from getting in. Turned out quite well.

he is referring to using an 18x6xoar on a DLE30.... IMO id say its on the small side..... i did some research and found that the prop that gives the DLE30 the "best" performance is a 19x8

17x6 is perrrfect on the DLE20

Actually, I've used an 18X6 on a DLE-20 on another H-9 cub and Taylorcraft. Haven't tried anything larger on the 30, other than an 18X8, which gives just a little too much residual thrust at idle.

Couple more photos of the Cub seaplane with wings on. Finished hinging the ailerons and added the aileron servos. Struts are in blue and will have the last coat of paint on them tonight.

Wing struts now painted and attached. You can also see the very heavy seam in the close-up of the front of the cowl. The seam goes around the front and on the right-side as well. That'll take some sanding and filling.

Sanded, filled, sanded, then two coats of primer, 4 coats of color and two coats of clear on the cowl. Turned out fairly well. Paint was Rustoleum primer, color and clear.

Fortunately, we've had a pretty warm winter here in southwest Michigan, the bad side is the water is still very cold. It probably won't be until at least late April or May. Yes, plenty of power, but likely around 20+ lbs for the final weight. I'll weigh it with my digital scale when I get the balance of the electronics installed. Will definately take video and photos on the maiden flight.

Horizonhobby, earlier in this thread, L/G mod's were shown to replace the springs with O-rings, AKA Robart style. Depending on the number of O-rings installed, you can vary the stiffness of the L/G to your preference.

Joe, I just installed the Dubro 4/40 tail/fly wire kit on my Hanger 9 1/4 J-3 Cub. It requires 2 sets of these and they work. I was looking for 2/56 but Dubro doesn't make. The 4/40's look fine and will not break like the stock ones have.

Thanks,
Eddie

I am about to get my Hanger 9 1/4 scale J-3 done after messing around with it for 2 years. I should be able to maiden it next week. I sold my Hanger 9 #2 version last summer so I have been cubless for almost a year except for my new unfinished one. I just feel better when I have a J-3 to fly. Dle 20 with stock muffler. My corporate jet pilot son & I owned the J-3 in below picture in 2006. He was teaching me to fly it and then we sold it. I did approaches and down to about 10 ft then he took it. It was a dream come true for me being 61 years old and never having riden in a J-3 Cub.

Thanks,
Eddie

Just finishing up the float alignment, adding Locktite and completing the installation of the servo extensions/sealing of the hatches. Added some adhesive aluminum tape to the leading edges of the Xoar propeller, then re-balanced the prop. Burnished the aluminum on the prop so it's nice and tite. I'll spray a coat or two of clear over the prop and re-balance. Want to be sure it's protected as much as possible, from water damage.

Need to find a new rear-seat assembly, as I don't have one from cannibalized parts from other H-9 Cubs. H-9 is on back-order, so I guess I'll have to wait for a while.

Planejaw, Thanks -I notice that besides your new float J-3 you have another one on the wall. I like the float version you have done. Should really look good on the water in the sunlight. The maiden on my J-3 should be uneventful I hope. I love flying rc cubs. I have enjoyed your conversion build here...
Thanks,
Eddie

Thanks for the note Eddie.

Yes, the yellow one done in Army observation colors is also a H-9. It has a DLE-20 in the nose. These two are my second and third H-9 Cubs. The seaplane version should give good visibility and contrast, even on an overcast day. I'll attach a shot of the bottom of the cowl, You can just make out the gas-tank vent line, which comes out the bottom of the fuselage, just behind the cowl. Nice and tight fit with a grommet and alittle silicone, to keep water out. 16 oz. Rotoflow fuel tank in the cabin.

I'm also working on a BUSA 1/3 scale Super Cub, but that will likely be a civilian version, green trim over white or cream. It's framed up, but has a long way to go. Probably another year of building.

Yes, I very much enjoy Cub flying. Cubs and biplanes!

Eddie, how much lead did you have to add up from to get it to balance? the reason i ask is because mine was on the verge of being too tail heavy for my liking with a dle 30. i have a 4cell pack as far up as i could get it in the fuel tank compartment, the ign module is under the removable floorboard behind tank, and my 2100 life pack is behind the pilot in the stock location.... it would actually climb inverted..... the next day i added 4 ouces of leaf wrapped in foam and electrical tape and stapped it to a standoff on my dle 30.... now she flys much better and landing are easier

Just started this build! have a power 160, 10s 5000, 19x10 xoar, HV 85 esc, 850 Life,
Will do the tail wire mod and the O rings mod. Any other mods i should do? Also, are you all glueing or screwing your windshield in?

Dave,
I glued mine in with Pacer Formula 560 canopy glue. Takes a while to dry but it dries clear, is slightly flexible so you don't develop cracks near screws or screw holes, and while it's wet, you can clean it up with a damp paper towel. I have just under 200 flights on my H9 Cub, with all but 4 on water and have had absolutely no problems with anything on the plane as of yet. Landing on floats are so pretty, you can bring it in so smoothly, you can drag the water rudders before the floats even touch!

Dave, I use #2 3/8 button head sheet metal screws in mine so I can remove it easily if needed. Russ has 200 flights on his and uses glue. His method has been proven. I have used screws in my previous 2 Hanger 9 J-3's and have not had any problems with lots of flights so it is your choice of which method to use as they both work well.

I have also used screws with no cracking issues. DLE-20 balances with zero added weight. On my "land-Cub," Removed the front seat and have two 3100 Mah LiFe batteries strapped just ahead of the CG. Balances with no added ballast anywhere. This is the second Cub with this engine and no added ballast. My Blue/Orange has a DLE-30 and floats, again, front seat removed and batteries velcro-strapped to front cabin floor.

Photo below shows the Cub on the balancer. Nice and level at 4 1/2" behind the leading edge, with the range being 4 to 4 3/4" per the manual.
