RE: Hangar 9 1/4 Scale Piper Cub ARF???
Thinking about geting a quarter scale cub,but wondering if my saito 125 will have enough to fly it? Also wondering if I would need a 90 degree elbow for the exhaust.I know that saito has one for the 120-180 motor but dont know if they make one for the 125. The specs for the plane call for a Zenoah G20 or a 125 four stoke but the manual states a 180 Saito. Any advice would be welcomed.

People are flying it with G20 and G26 and that G26 weights like 3+ ponds!!! so I think that Saito 1.25 might be too light!!!!
That's why I 'm thinking in installing a Brison 2.4 I got ti also weights at 3lb so why not!!!!

I have been flying with a saito 125 and it flies great. There isn't the climb out I would like some times, but if you are going to fly scale then a 125 will work perfect. I can fly for about 17 minutes just taking it easy. 1/4 to 1/2 throtle is all you need. I am using a 17x4w prop and it pulls great.
I mounted my saito 125 sideways. That way I wouldn't run into a siphoning problem. It also allows for a great looking cowl.
You will also need to fur out the firewall about 6mm so the prop washer will line up with the cowl. To do this I just used the supplied plywood engine mount jig and some ply I had around, sealed and glued to the firewall and presto.
Te saito 125 crankshaft is a little short compared to a 150-180 or gas engine.

I have "built" and flown two of these 106" CUBs using OS 1.60's and one with a MARK M210 (MOKI).
The MARK M 210 turned a 20 x 8 and would allow some humongous loops etc. I flew it at about 1/4 throttle most of the time. The plane was a bit nose heavy with this engine.
The OS 1.60 was just right. Plenty of power and a much better CG.
I had some problems getting good in-flight video, however, the review with the MARK M 210 is on the free AMA masportaviator site if you are interested.
Regards,
Eric.

RE: Hangar 9 1/4 Scale Piper Cub ARF???
Does anyone know if use the Saito 125 will I need a 90 dgree elbow on the exhaust? I know the Saito wont have the weight of a Zenoah g 20 and I will have to add some lead up front, burt power wise it should be close. I have a Saito 125 sitting around and would like to use it rather than buying a new motor. At the same token I don't want it to be under power and crash the plane. Any Thoughts?????

mine is working with a saito 150 and it is more than enogh,,, your saito 125 wold do the job, I flying fieald have 1,500 ft. over the see level... that is an important point,, wich is the altitud of your flying feald. if it is higer you sholud need more , and if it is lower you ell be plenity of power.

I inherited a Hanger 9 Cub, so this thread has been very interesting for me. I'm still not sure which engine I am going to use. Thanks to everyone for posting.

Just bought my 1/4 scale Cub. I am putting a Saito 150 on it. Doing this because I have one laying around. Anybody that has already put this monster together and has some build tips for me, post them. I will be following this thread.....Thanks, Mark

In reply to lou1947; I think the Saito 125 idea is a good one but forget about the 90 degree elbow; you will have to cut a lot of that beautiful cowl away. I installed the Slimline inverted Pitts muffler. As can be seen from the photo only the two exhaust pipes will protrude and it is beautifully made. The Slimline is quite difficult to source since only the Saito 125 is made with a 13mm thread but I managed to track them down at Chief Aircraft. Furthermore I found that the H9 Cub leave a lot to be desired as far as interior finishing is concerned; I sanded most areas down and resprayed and things are looking much better now. Cub yellow Solartex on non door side also helps.

Thanks for all the replies. I guess that going with a 125 Saito or up to 180 Saito is a matter of preference. I am still undecided but probably leaning more to the 125 since I already have one. Baron b58 your workmanship is oustanding. Have you flown it yet and how much lead did you have to add to make the plane balance it? Do you know where I could get a muffler like yours?

Hey Capt G-
I have one coming tomorrow and am thinking about the Fuji 24EI. This would be my first gasser. Is it a good first gas engine? Had mostly 4-sroke glows the ten yrs Iv'e been in the hobby and have decided to give gas a go. Gas engines seems intimidating compared to glow to me. Just debating whether to give gas a try or stick to glow.
Thanks

I first got into gas when I built my Imac airplane for two reasons: I didn't know anything about them and I needed BIG power for a big airplane. I soon discovered the simplicity and economics of gas operation , not to mention the ease of cleanup and so I put one in my P-47. Now it's my first choice for a new project. I have not run the Fuji yet but reasearch shows favorable coments. In the CUB, the fit was better than the Z-20 (no standoffs needed and no muffler showing on the side) and it makes more power swinging a larger prop. I will let you know how it flys.

RE: Hangar 9 1/4 Scale Piper Cub ARF???
None of my gas engines were small enough for my Cub, so I ordered a Fuji last week. I didn't get the EI. I have had pretty good luck with magnetos in the past and didn't want to bother with the extra battery pack. I hope I don't regret my decision. With all the snow on the ground, it will be some time before I get it in the air.

The Fuji engine showed up today and I am very pleased with how it looks. It is very light and should be very easy to mount.
