Was at the Hobby Shop last week and walked by this box and it just called out to me. I always look for interesting planes and the Seagull Gee Bee does not dissappoint. Assembly was pretty easy, put an OS 120 AX with slimline pitts muffler. Didn't really like the wheels and wish the struts had a rear brace. Went out to field yesterday for the maiden, not much trim needed, some down and she was flying pretty good. Had to increase throws for more roll rate, adjusted low rate on elevator for more and decreased high rate. Started out with 16x8 APC, ented up with 16x4W at about 9450 rpm's. Flies nice, as commented before somewhat like a trainer until you have to land. Slows down fairly well but the gear bounce a little. Flipped her over a couple of times, wheels too close to wheel pants and finally screw came out holding Oleo into leg. Ended up cracking wheel pants, wires cut thru fiberglass. Ordered new pants, will fix struts, going to use bigger but thinner tires so should fit better in pants. I am going to change how the wires attatch to the pants, I am going to go directly to them instead of the leg. Overall, very happy with the unique looking plane. Probably could have put the OS 160 in it for more power but oh well!!

Hi R/C Foolish , Congrates on the maiden , from what you have said it sounds like they have removed the rear bracing leg on the
main gear when they went to the struts ? , if you look back you'll see that I kept that rear brace when I fitted up some after market
struts from unitracks international & think that it is required as you have said ,would like to see a picture of this new set up with the
struts.
I think the old wire gear was easily modified I wonder if the wings you have still have the mounting blocks for the rear brace ?.
Cheers Steff.

I went back out to the field yesterday, with new wheels, pants and wire setup. Cold and windy but I got a couple of flights in. This plane is really deceiving, looks like a racer and flies like a trainer. 2 landings with no problems, a little fast, 1 with the wind the second against much better. I might grind a little more of the opening in the wheel pants but other that that I am all set. If anybody has an old set of gear for this plane, I would be interested in buying them to add the rear part of the strut.

Nice going on the maiden flight.
I bought the kit a few weeks ago, but haven't put it together. i am still trying to decide what engine to use in it.
A 120 glow engine, a 180 four cycle or a 26cc gas engine. Decisions, decisions.
But it is nice to read about all you other guys ahead of me on getting them working.
I'll have to check the landing gear closely to see if it looks like a weak place to break or not.

Unfortunately, my GeeBee met a sudden death. OS 120 died at the top of a loop in the wrong part of our field. Went into the top of our tallest tree, good news it fell thru the tree to the bottom, a lot of damage. Turns out the head bolts on the OS came out, causing the dead stick. I would say the 120 is not enough power. If you are going to go 2 stroke, go to the 160 instead. I am debating replacing everything and might put a DL 30 in it.

Bummer on the bad luck. Who would think that the head bolts would come loose on the engine. Not exactly something I would check on a OS engine for sure.

OS says you are responsible to check bolts before every flight. Yah right, like we all do that!!!!
Anyway they are being good after some hard persuasion. They are going to replace my 120 with a 160FX and because they don't sell the GeeBee, they will give me the Great Planes Extra 330S 79" wing. I just have to pay the difference in the costs. Another instance of good Customer Service.

Sorry for your loss. I am just starting to build mine. It is a great kit, though I was disappointed in seeing the damaged wheel pants.
I have fitted an MLD-28 to the front and at this time I don't think its weight will be a factor in the cg.
Power HD servos will be used everywhere except the throttle. JR Sports will be plenty there.

Hello everyone,
yes I have got several videos of my Seagull GEE BEE Z with 40cc gass engine in action. My problem is I am not able right now to to put all the video in one and optimalize it.
Can anybody download my videos, put all the pieces in to one optimalized video and put it on youtube?
There are take offs and landings of the beast. It is really hard to land it safety. You will see.
That is the link, I put all the raw movies in to one zip file.

Thanks for help.

I knew you would Steff, go on then show us another one of your editing master pieces.

For any one else out there that has the new kit with suspension i would still like to see a pic of the setup.
Cheers Gus

Thanks guys, I have three 120 engines a GMS and two Webra's that I have been wanting to use on something again, along with a 180 four cycle. The 120s and 4 cycle engine are probably about equal in power as is the 26cc gas engine too.  So I have been entertaining using the gas engine in it instead. The gas engine should not need any extra lead weight to help balance. Plus I can put the servos in the tail too. I do love the servos in the tail with short pushrod linkage. So I am definitely leaning in that direction. So it is likely the gas engine will be the one to install.

Nice videos, thanks for sharing.
The 170 radial on the front on your plane appears to be working out good too.

Maidened my Gee Bee today. This is the newer version with oleo struts and one piece wheel pants. Evolution 1.20 with a Pitts muffler and on board glow, 16x6 prop. I mounted the engine at about 5 1/4 inches where the manual says just over 6 to try and keep the nose short and more scale looking. Balanced perfectly, and would have been nose heavy if I mounted it where instructed. Take off was uneventful, the Evolution pulled it right onto the mains and some elevator lifted her off. Flew pretty much like a low wing trainer as others have reported. Good speed even though I had the motor rich as slop since it is new. Knife edges are awesome! I was not looking forward to the landing, but it was really a non-event. I got her nice and slow and dropped it in on all threes. Got three small bounces from the oleos, but overall not bad for my first try. Not a scratch on the wheel pants! Overall I am very impressed and can't wait to fly it again. The only real changes I did were to cut out the N numbers and place them individually to look more like the real plane. Also bought a second decal set since the "4's" on the wing are supposed to be the same size as the ones on the fuse. Not sure why they gave you two small "4's" for the wings? Enjoy the pics, take off, flight and landing. -Chris

R/C Foolish: I am surprised your 1.20 wasn't enough. My Evolution 1.20 pulls mine vertical while still new and running super rich. Maybe the loose head robbed your power? I had an OS 1.60 in my Great Planes Gee Bee and it pulled it nicely, but this Z will be nose heavy with that motor. Lighter the better with this plane, much easier to land that way....just my opinion.

Got some more work done on the MLD-28 Z. In the pictures you'll note that I tooth pick in Dubro hinges. I never have trusted one of my babies to the quick hinge material. Also as a habit, I glass the center sections of all my wings, the Z in particular as it has only the wing tube and no other braces, which I thought was a little odd, and risky using a gasser.

I balanced mine at that mark, upside down. I have a few flights on mine and it feels fine. Just remember that it is not hard to land, it just likes to be landed gently.
