Chuck: Can you give a comparrison between the YS-63 and a 46-AX? I am thinking, maybe I could substitute one of my 46's instead of pulling the 55 out of my Tango.

NorfolkSouthern
I've got a couple .46-AX's. They aren't quite as powerful as the little YS in my opinion. Still, I can tell you that they will do an excellent job flying the plane, especially with something like an APC 12.25x3.75. The .55 will be even better.

glad this went well for you tiday Chuck.
was trying to get out there but work got in the way.
any chance you'll be out next Sunday?
Good question. Saturday is my normal flying day but next Sunday is my birthday. You'd think I would do what I wanted to do that day and that would be go flying. I think other people (i.e. wife) have it in their head I will be doing something with them. In other words, we'll see.

Mounted my Saito last night, now I have to relocate my throttle servo. I guess I am gonna just move it up higher! What a p.i.t.a....then I need to figure out a prop! Any suggestions?
With a saito 100 for an aerobatic plane I've always been happy with a xoar 15x6 or an apc 16x4. There's plenty of clearance for the 16 inch prop so you shouldn't have any problems.

Chuck congrats on the maiden and thanks for the flight report, I got my replacement esc today so a little solder work and I should be ready to balance and get mine airborne. Did you go with the CG you posted earlier or did you make any changes before you did your maiden? Also have you had a chance to weigh yours yet? I'll get mine on a scale after I get the esc installed, I'm curious how much of a weight difference if any between your glow setup and my electric one.

I left the CG right where it was and had no problems. Someone who is a more skilled 3D pilot than me may even want it back a little further. I haven't weighed it yet. I may do it tomorrow if I have some spare time to spend out in the garage.

anyone thinking like me and wanting to put a 90 four stroke on it.I fly lots of 3d on my 3D hobby planes but the weight on this doesnt look to good for electric but I like flying my "slimmers "too.so a 90 os is laying around and this plane looks great .

All up weight is way heavier than I was hoping for. I'm at 6lbs 10oz RTF with the recommended motor and a Motrolfly 80amp esc. I'm also going to be running 6s TP 3850's. I could shed a little weight switching to a carbon tube and carbon gear, drop the wheel pants, and cutout the bottom of the canopy hatch, but it'll be around $75 more for the carbon stuff, and I just don't think an extra looks right without the wheelpants so this one is done. I had to go ahead and move the rudder servo to the rear of the plane to get my CG in line. I knew when I gave up on doing the 4s setup I'd get a little more porky but I didn't think I'd get to the max weight range either.

On the up side, my initial runup with the rimfire is showing lots of promise. I should have more than enough power on hand. If anyone is interested I'll post some numbers later. I didn't have my watt meter hooked up to get any hard numbers this time around. Now if the weather would clear up around here I'll be in business.

Just got done weighing mine. It is exactly 6 pounds. It sure doesn't feel like 6 pounds when you pick it up but the scale doesn't lie. Regardless, it flys great.

I bet a 90 will cause the front to be heavy and maybe best to move servos on the back//

I would definitely use the rear mount for the rudder servo with an engine that big.

I agree chuck if I do go with a 90 four stroke I would balance hopefully using a direct push pull from the back .perhaps even the elevator.or at a minimum use a pull pull on rudder and direct connect elevator on rear.I hate using old fashioned rods in these planes.

I know what you mean. I'm tossing around the idea of moving my receiver battery out front on the engine box so I can maybe use the rear location for the rudder servo and do some sort of pull-pull.

I called Tower today, and they said that a .46 AX will pull it fine, but without much authority. The 55 AX and 12 x 6 prop would be best for a two-stroke, from what I was told. I am wondering if all the Futaba 3004S servos are ball bearing, as I have several. They can be used for the ailerons and elevator. I'll probably use one of my spare JR-537s for the throttle. The manual calls for a 1400mAh battery at least, so I guess I'll have to order one of those too. The four-cells I have are all 600 and 700; fine for a standard 72mhz receiver but probably not quite enough to be safe with the Spectrum.

Mine was a pretty good match. Much better than some of my other airplanes. The different colors line up well with the fuselage covering well too.

Mine was a very close match also. Just like Chuck all the lines from the design matched up very well, but that means the motor needs to be set up correctly to make the cowl match easier.

the 3004's have always been a good reliable servo.I might though consider at least on rudder going with a bit more torque.as for battery pack ...think about going with a 6v rather than a 4.8 especially with use of your spectrum or any 2.4 set up.I like the redundancy from a 6v gives and it gives you a better torque and response.I sstll want to use my os91 four stroke as I dont want to put out money for a 70 or 80 motor.the 55ax will be plenty ..

If anyone has a Saito in their plane, I could really use some help with the throttle linkage. My last option is gonna be using a flex cable and relocating the servo.

I maidened the Extra today. All was fine just a little up trim. The only issue I have with it is that the canopy came off in flight. I thought the magnets would be strong enough to keep it held down. Anybody else have the same issue or thoughts?

The magnets are not to hold the canopy on, they only hold it to the rear. The canopy has a built up groove that slides back over a tongue on the fuselage to hold it down and the magnets just keep it pulled back in that position. You have to make sure the canopy is pulled back and locked. I was a little skeptical when I first saw it but it has been working great.

I also have it locked into the grove but it poped off in flight.

I used to have magnets on my 3Dhobby planes as violent blenders blew them off .they now have latches and you can go to their web site and get them and you could simply make a dowel notched into the back of the canopy to lock it in.looks like a fun plane

Ram Jet: When I spoke with Great Planes, they told me that it would do well with a 46 AX. If your Enya has similar power, it should work.
Ram Jet and anyone else with a 46 installed, has this plane performed reasonably in your opinion with the 46 up front? If I decide to get this plane I would need to put a 46 AX on initially. At some point later a surpass 70 would go on.

I'm not a 3D flyer so I don't need power for that. Most times I'm flying pretty gently, but I do like a reasonable amount of pull on-tap of course to pull the occasional sudden gallop or climb, etc. You're able to do that without feeling too much like you're wringing it dry?

What props you using with your 46's on this?

Thanks

EDIT: Just noticed this from further up:
ORIGINAL: ChuckW
I've got a couple .46-AX's. They aren't quite as powerful as the little YS in my opinion. Still, I can tell you that they will do an excellent job flying the plane, especially with something like an APC 12.25x3.75. The .55 will be even better.
So you have not tried your 46 AX on this plane, but on something very similar in type, weight, size? I'm surprised by the low pitch you mentioned, but then 12 inches is longish for 46.

Thanks
