Folks:
I searched the fora and did not see my specific question;

I'm building a Phoenix Extra 300S, powered with OS FX .46. Engine mounted at proper distance from firewall to thrust washer. Cowl trimmed and ready to be mounted. NOW - when I tried to attach the (standard) muffler, 1) it does not clear the bottom of the fuse, and 2) looks as if it will require some trimming along the bottom of the cowl. Problem 2 is trivial, but I'm not sure what to do about problem #1.

Has anyone else run into this situation? How did you resolve it? (Pitts muffler, extension between exhaust port and muffler, etc)

Thanks

The tech notes on the Tower site say "Engine mounts upright" but the photo does not show it that way.

Does the engine mount on its side? If so, a muffler extension might work.

This is the muffler extension mentioned in the 46FX parts listing. It will move the muffler 7/16" further from the engine.

Thanks
I thought too that the muffler extension might be the best bet. I hate to cut into airframe.
What about the Pitts-style muffler? Is that a better option?

People seem to have very mixed feelings about pitts mufflers. I have never owned one. I read repots here all the time about low backpressure and not getting enough pressure to the tank. People often have to restrict the outlets to get their engines to run right. If moving the muffler 7/16" will make it clear the fuselage, that is what I would do. Some folks will go to great lengths to hide a muffler. I've never had a scale masterpeice so I am of the opinion that it is OK for model airplanes to have a visible muffler.
