Default Update on the turboprop

sorry still no video i now...........

problems we had:

1 still the CG was giving us a hard time
2 flew like a rocket with almost no steering

ok we tested her again in belgium (pampa)
sice we are attending the show in 2 weeks together with the Oracle Turbo Raven

we found out that the CG was not the problem
it was............ just to much power!
the Extra will not go any faster but when put in vertical it keeps the same speed as going horizontal
in knife edge the extra would pull out of it going almost 90 degrees to the right
after inspecting all of it we changed all the settings on the controls
as basic i used the settings from my other extra with the 50cc petrol
we went back to very small trows on all of the rudders
that was much better , but again on knife edge she pulled to the right
i thought hang on, pull power back to 60% and tryed again
thats it! extra behaved like my other one could do all the tricks in the book
so for now we practice only with all manouvers on 60% only when we go vertical we pull to 100% and see her going up and up..
engine is running great , all the foil is still on the wings ;-)
and no balsa burning down the runway....
the Great planes Extra is a great plane and nothing came of yet!
so i now declare this extra as a Wren turboprop suitable!
if anyone is attending Jets Over Pampa you can see her there flying on the show in 2 weeks
ill make a nice video there

here is a picture taken last saturday on the pampa field
its our "Digitech"team

You should send this to Great Planes and see if they can sponsor a trip to the USA for you and your team. I would like to see it and I know others would as well. Our Big jet events (SE) are in Florida in the spring. Maybe next year???

well why do they need to sponsor it?

Larry is Wren,s official importer for USA www.jethangar.com
i am shure you will find people there that fly allready with the Turboprop
and the extra is much cheaper in the states..............
and i hate to fly (in something i dont control) believe it or not
anyway i would love to come to the states but then you are right
can,t imagine the cost of transportation just for the 2 planes

Im curious of something.

What would happen in a nose over situation with the turbine running?
If the prop shaft jammed up due to the propellor in the dirt, what would the turbine do?

by the way, great project, just love it, I've always wanted to build a twin turbo prop airliner like a saab or ATR

well funny you mention that
yes the turbine will keep running if it is on iddle it is no serious problem the plane falls back on its back and the propellor will spin again

Default latest news

ok as promissed the video
Recorded on Jets Over Pampa 19-20 july in Belgium
the day started out with a problem
while starting the turbine she went over 800 degrees on startup
The Wren team who was there inspected the turboprop
and found it had a hotspot , they immidiatly swapped the engine over
and we had here going again
i must say i have never gotten such a good support as from the Wren Team
we had 4 flights with the Extra with no problems!!
as you can hear sometimes in the video the sound of the prop going thru the sound barrier (mentz 22x12)
i can safely say the patty can hold it

the video
HOWEVER it was over 750 MB big for 8 minutes

i have decoded it to mpeg4 but is still 80 MB!!!!
but in 16:9 and Very good quality

please download here the codec for your windows media player

http://download.divx.com/divx/DivX505Bundle.exe

after this see the video

on http://209.15.85.5/neelix/turbines/extrapampa.avi

hear her howl!!

however there is a jet flying at the same time but you can hear the turbopatty pretty good

regards

Sandor

and here is a picture of our team and Mike Murphy from Wren

a well you see i dont hide bad landings
no its not nose heavy but when you bring the patty in to fast she will nose dive due to the friction of the weels i think
however i could be a bad pilot
anyway the prop was ok since the turbine does NOT directly drive the gearbox

hers a pic of our team incl turbo raven

Yes, "Turbosandor".. The new action Hero.

I can see the marketing now.........

"turbosandor" fights evil across the globe
(I wonder if he should have a mask and a cape)

"turbosandor", fly's to trouble spots with his turbo powered backpack.. (Humm. backpack, OK scrap the cape, maybe a fire hazard)

"turbosandor", Action figures sold in stores, world wide..
"turbosandor" costumes for Kid's.

Hundreds of "turbosandor" accessories for the action figure.

THEN
"turbosandor".... meets.......... "Barbie"

Everything "turbosandor" does is turbo powered

THEREFORE

"Barbie dumps "Ken"

( "Barbie" now looks frazzled but has a smile all the time.)

Default A bit late, more Jets over Pampa 2003...

Yes, a little late, but here some foto's of Pampa. Great show, and luckty for me, 3 turbo props flying (and a helicopter... ) Since I want to attach a nice Air Tractor to a turboprop in a few years, I found the trip very enjoyable and educational.
Next to the Turbo Raven and PW Extra, there was also a very acceptable Tucano

Hi ben

nice pictures indeed
and yes the tucano won first price well we also agreed it was a very nice display
especialy we convinced the pilot to open the maximum rpm,s
since he never flew it above 140000 rpm,s after we did our display he did......
as i understood this was the first time ever anywhere in the world 3 turboprops flew at one show

did you like the performance of the turbo Raven? or the extra?

regards

Yep, Liked it very much. Was also very happy (and impressed) to see the Raven fly on Saturday afternoon already, after the landing incident.
I found both Extra and Raven impressive machines, and nice displays also. Not sure which one, I do recall that one off them has the high pitch noise of the propeller tips, so combination of rpm and prop size. I do recall the extra during take off, early Sunday morning (you guys parked conveniently close next to our Kangaroo...) how silent the engine spins up and that you only hear the prop with a slight whisper in the background. (I guess that leaves the Raven with the high pitch noise... )

Number one impression, when seeing the Wren stand, and see you guys do the engine build in on the Extra on Saturday and flying them during the weekend, is how accessible the turbine can be. It is smaller then I expected, and when build in properly easy to operate, given a few restrictions of course. Still I have the impression that the turboprop makes entering the world of turbines a little easier then just switching to jet flying.

Next to that, I did talk to one or two people of you crew, maybe even to you in person, my interest for turboprop lies in the fact that I want to build a scale Air Tractor in a couple of years (3-5). that includes turbo prop. I would love to combine it with a variable pitch prop, although the Wren handles it's RPM range very well on the engine RPM.
I read that you are looking into the PC-21 to build, a club member has the same intentions, to see in 2 years time what the status is on PC-21, and the price of turbo props. Another beautiful plane
