Hi all

I am going to try my hand at my first "Scale" project. I am going to buy the Great Planes Cessna 182 Skylane and have a question about mounting the engine.

Unfortunately I don't have a four stroke lying around so my trusty homeless OS46AX is going in there. I downloaded the manual and I see the plane has a very nice cut out at the bottom of the fuselage where the muffler goes. Now that seems to work perfectly for a four stroke (As depicted) but will a 2 stroke muffler also "fit" in there?

I don't want to cut the cowl or have a big bulky muffler sticking out so if it does not fit I will probably get a pitts muffler.

I think once you test fit it you could tell better but I believe if you use an exhaust manifold extension you could angle it out Thur the fuselage and cowling. I have the OS FS-56-a and needed to use a 45 degree manifold to angle it out. Fits perfect but had to cut the cowling to allow the valve cover to fit. If I had mounted the OS inverted I would not have had to cut the cowl.

I will have to cut the cowl for cooling for the head and for the glowdriver to reach. I also have a muffler extention that I used on another plane so that might just work.

Anyways, plane coming today so I will have hold thumbs and test fit it. Otherwise I will side mount the engine and put a pitts muffler on. Looks quite nice having two exhausts sticking out slightly at the bottom

Well. Purchased my plane ....

The hobby shop had the Great Planes and the CMP Cessna in stock and after looking at both carefully opted for the CMP Cessna, quite beautifull with the fibreglass fuselage.

Anyway, the engine/muffler does not fit without having to cut away a fairly large portion of the cowl for the muffler, so pitts muffler it is.

A friend at the field had a Mustang also with an OS46AX and a Slimline Pitts muffler. Looks nice and also has a very nice grunty sound to it :-)

Hi: One thing I will share with you is don't use the hardware that came with it and get the Robart 654 nose gear. I used Robart 1/8 point hinges and 3/4" metal control horns on the control surfaces and went with 2-3/4 tires. There are threads that say the same thing about the hardware. I took there advise and am a better piece of mind now. It is a great looking plane but I wish CMP used better hardware. I did use the double push rod for the Elevator because that is good and stiff. That's just my 2 cents worth. I am just about done with mine then it is onto the Great-Planes 1/4 scale P17 Stearman.
