OK, I finally went and did it. I actually ordered a big old ARF instead of a kit! Anyway, I have a ST 3250 that I want to shoehorn into the Edge.
I have read some guys putting gassers in this one and I am just curious if anyone else has tried the 3250 combination. If so, do you have anything that you would recoomend doing (or NOT doing) in regards to the assembling of this ARF? Also, how did your finished plane fly for you with this package? I am not too worried about the big Tiger engine, as I have used them for years with good success, but I always flew them in airframes that I had constructed and KNEW how well things were glued!
Thanks in advance for any advice!

I've seen the ST 3000 fly the Hangar 9 1/4 Cap 232 and it was very impressive. I don't see any problems with it on the Edge 540. I just put the first three flights on my Lanier Edge 540. I am using the Saito 1.80 and 16X8 APC. It balances at 5.75 aft of the leading edge with no weight added. The battery is right behind the firewall and the servos are forward with a dual elevator bellcrank in the tail with a fiberglass pushrod for linear motion. If they haven't modified the landing gear in the kit you might as well order a set from TNT in Ohio. I just ordered some tonight because on the third flight I landed just fine but went to make a reasonably high speed turn at the end of the field and the gear folded under. They are probably 6061 but are definitely not T6. I would say annealed "O" is more like it. They are easily bent by hand with no spring back. Also the landing gear plate is light ply and mine cracked also when the gear folded under. The rest of the airplane is pretty decent. I have always been a builder though and lots of little things about most arfs bother me. I guess I shouldn't buy them but time is very important to me as it is to everyone else. This Edge has very neutral knife capabilities as far as I can tell so far. I'll know more after a few more flights. That will be after the new gear are installed.

Sorry. My c.g. is at 5" aft of the l.e. not 5 3/4. On the fourth flight when I landed the weak landing gear colapsed and the blind nuts pulled through the lite ply landing gear plate! I didn't add lead to the nose. I just added a slimline muffler and heavier TNT gear plus a new landing gear plate of good grade 1/4 ply with aluminum angles on the top side in the fuse for the gear to bolt to. It lands very nice and has no slow speed tip stall tendency. I think 5 " is safe. I need more stick time to check 3 D control throws and c.g.

I like the tail servo idea but with the choice of the 1.80 it requires a bunch of other equipment be moved just behind the firewall. I am not sure of the weight mine is at but the Mk bellcrank with elevator servo up front does save quite a bit. A gas engine would be great on yours. Something in the 2.4 cid range would be nice. Brison or ZDZ maybe. If I get tired of buying glow fuel this summer for my 1.80 I may switch to a gasser on my EDGE!

An Mk bellcrank can be purchased from Central Hobbies at www.centralhobbies.com They produce a line of good quality hardware used by quite a few pattern pilots. The bellcrank incorporates ball bearings on the cross shaft to eliminate drag and play in the linkage. Ball joints and a fiberglass pushrod complete the assembly.

Hey, RLDIII, elderair, did you guys move the firewall back to make room for the 180? I have the same setup unassembled and find that I need another 1/4" clearance for the big Saito. Lanier suggests cutting out the firewall, leaving the tri-stock and 1/4 ply that's immediately behind it in place, then glueing and pinning in a piece of 3/8 ply just behind it for strength and clearance.
Where do I find CF landing gear for this bird?
Thanks

Snotlocker,
It flew ok with the CG that far aft? I added a bunch of lead to the nose to get it to balance @ 4 3/4". Yours is not snappy?
I did not get to fly mine yet. a friend had the honors. I cut my middle finger starting it and was bleeding to bad to hold my radio. So, he flew it for me. After that I went and got 8 stitches in my finger..... Damn APC props!!!

Troy Built sells carbon fiber gear for the Hangar 9 Edge arf. I don't see why you couldn't put it right on the Lanier. I think it is $35.00. I would have ordered it instead of the TNT gear but I wasn't aware of it's availability. Not sure of the link for Troy Built. One note about starting a big four stroke. Here is my procedure. I use my regular electric starter. I pull the trim all the way down so the carb barrel is closed completely. This allows the 1.80 to develop no compression as it turns over with nothing to fill the cylinder. Just about any starter will turn it in this condition. When the motor is rolling over really good I reach over and slide the throttle trim up and the engine starts immediately. No missing fingers and no broken propellers from the chicken stick getting in the way. Also I used the David Brown mount and I have 1/8 inch spinner clearance with a True Turn spinner. Engine is side mounted and I use a Slimline muffler. These mufflers are about the best thing for a four stroke I have yet to find.

sicko69, I meant that the 180 sticks out too far! I got a GP mount and I can't move the engine back far enough. There's 3/8" clearance with the carb rubbing against the engine mount. I guess I could fly it like this.
elderair, hmmm.... dave brown mount may be cheaper/easier.
Looks like I found troy built:

Just got my TNT gear installed today. It is a whole different story from the factory gear. Very thick. Now I just need some weather with wind below 20 mph. I am anxious to wring it out and be able to land it with a little confidence that the gear won't fold. I like it so far and may start moving the c.g. from the 5.25 " it is at now. Slooowwwly though.
