Default GP Super Skybolt

Great Planes Super Skybolt arf. ==I am planning to order one soon. I have an OS91fs and a Saito 82 on the shelf. Can anyone tell me which engine would be better suited for power and balance. I would like to not add any extra weight. How does this plane balance out? I just want a good sunday flyer. Any help and info is much appreciated.

It may not be the exact answer but I have a Saito 91 in mine with an APC 14x6. It's a perfect combo. Battery is mounted under the fuel tank. No other balancing needed. I would say the OS would be the way for you to go.

I have a OS FS91 in mine and I wished I had a tad more power. The plane flies nice with the 91 but not spectacular. If you search the forums there is a lengthy thread on this plane and most people that own one feel that a larger engine than the 91fsis better.

I've got a 120 Magnum on the KIT version. .91 should be a good match, but it could use a little more power. But then, I am a power freak.

I have one with a RCV .91CD, it fits totally inside the cowl and for my sport flying, it's got plenty of power, not unlimited vertical, but will pull straight up for about 500 feet before it loses umph! I have no weight added to balance, but I am running a large battery that origianally was used to power the receiver and an onboard glow system that was removed because the RCV was way to reliable at idle. You might want to do what alot of people are doing and remove about 1/4" of covering around the edge by the firewall and epoxyglass the firewall to the fuse front.

Between that Saito 82 and OS 91, there's really no choice - Go with the 91

Thanks for the help guys. It sounds like the OS91 will be the power of choice.

My Super SkyBolt is a rocket ship with a YS 110 and it balanced right on the money. Fly it at half throttle most of the time but it will go out of sight full throttle and straight up

I have an OS 1.20 AX on my Super Skybolt that balanced at the recommended CG with all components in their rightful spot. My Skybolt is now 3 years old with hundreds of flights. Still my favorite flying ARF of all time.

I have an OS 91 fs on mine, but turn a 15x4w prop. That yields unlimited vertical and plenty of speed (for this type of model).

It does a lot of things well, but inverted spins are extraordinary.

Husker and planebuilder66 could you please post more pictures of your planes?

My kit built one (which happens to look an awful lot like Deadeyes's ) started with an ASP 1.20, but now has an OS 1.60 twin cylinder lurking under the cowl (and sticking out both sides of it!). Massively over-powered but still flies SO well and "climbs like a monkey" (to quote Von Richtoffen).

FYI the 16" prop was too big to land the plane without a prop strike - I ended up changing it out for a 3 blade 14x9.

I have the SkyBolt since 2007, fitted with an OS 91 Surpass II with pump.
I turned a 15x6 propeller for like 2years, that's very scale like flying, then I switched to a 14x7 propeller and it is kind of a good sport flyer...
But I still feel that I really need more power for nice acrobatics.

I guess I will be trying the 15x4 propeller to see.

Note that this plane is built for the OS 91 engine, and you have a template as well to cut the cowl for this particular engine.
