Glad to hear you got your Katana in the air, I was out flying mine all morning and going out again tomorrow. I agree the covering is sucks, I am really glad I recovered mine and you're right this plane doesn't look right without wheel pants. My stock wheel pants have been replaced with wheel pants off a Hangar 9 cap.

My Saito 180 spins an 18X6 prop at 8600 RPM. Hopefully my RCS 180 will top that when I get it back from RC Showcase.

heya .. well yea it was a good flying unit i was happy .....and i don't know if you read my other thread. i mentioned. but i flew with a 15x6 ! i needed to break in it more i guess when i left house the 15x6 would not do 7k... when i got home i checked it it was at 10.2 k !! so i tried a 15x8 9400 . i did not have a 16x6. tried a 16x8... 7850 ish i am going to try that tomorrow. should be way better. if it hates the 16x8,,,,,, ill get a 16x6 on the way home from Field....i have a 15x8 to put on it if i need to..

my wheelpants got jacked up on my lack of better judgment and the catch fence...wind was blowing hard and a few of my landing i could not get it to turn around....hence spas.....and damn fence...

i used epoxy and some fiberglass this eve..got emm back on. look uggo but way better then none....

and i will fly this covering till it all flys off then i will get it covered i guess..

all in all it flys well..........i was trying not to beat it on first day
--------------------------------------------------------

and DiabloKid

that plane in my avitar is called a "diabolo"
it rocks has a 46FX on it (old one with front needle valve)i put bearings in it and helped it out

i have had it for 7+ years and it was at least a few years old when i got iyt from a buddy....i think it was a carl goldberg kit....

plane was built by an old man that was a perfectionist. took him months.. it is very very light and it rocks!
is my best quality plane i have ever had by far..has some "old school "stuff on it but is nice. i fly it with the JR 347 radio i bought it with!

i was messing with a "crazy max" today in budies front yard. its a trip to fly them cheesy electric deals.!...but ya can fly emm in the street!

well too the Katana out today in 25+ MPH wind. was a blast!...my FT-120 that i thought was going to be slow. is doing quite well!
its broke in and hauling!. i have one more prop to try..

the thing is smoooooth. i am stoked and sounds cool too..
i set the duel rates for elevator and (mostly) rudder on high..(lots higher then norm) then i went up and was doing some testing....
it does perfect knife edge`s... most of my other planes want to roll off one direction... takes quite of bit of rudder but it is neat.... i messed around with elevator on ultra high to see if it had any bad habits.... (like snaps or whatever) but seemed ok...
still is new to me so i have not tried a allot of slow speed stuff yet.. all i know is in the wind you hve to point it at the ground and leave the throttl on and fly it in.!.....

was hilarious.. i did a lil dragging of the wing tips a few times burnt the covering off in spots.

the covering on the plane sucks...... but oh well was an inexpensive ARF.

goes verticaL way better then i expected.. quite a ways!
some ole man was like"is that a twin" when he saw me fueling it up...so he wandered over to help me hold it while i fired it up
ha ! he was all "even sounds like a real plane son"
thing was sort of a hit at the field..
some ole by said "we have a 400' limit" i was like "am i close?"(while flying) he said "no not really . only about 600'" ! hahahah. i was laughing my ass off.

i need to put some quality wheels on it too,, bout got the rear one wore off already. are them soft sponge looking ones ..track nice but wear fast.
all in all it was a fun weekend...
issue`s i thought i was going to have,.....i did not. and ones i thought i would`nt.....i did

What is the Katana covered with? Is it real Ultracoat or Monocoat? And how much do yours weigh?
Thanks.

>>the covering on the plane sucks...... but oh well was an inexpensive ARF.<<

Amen! It takes me so long to cover a plane that I'll take what I get. I recently spent eight hours covering the RUDDER on my CA Models 31% Extra...eight freakin' hours. Yes, I'm a perfectionist and yes it was a difficult scheme, but still...

I finally got my Katana! Woohoo right? DO NOT ORDER THESE FROM CHIEF AIRCRAFT! THEY GAVE ME THE RUN-AROUND FOR A MONTH!

CHIEF AIRCRAFT = BAD
GSP = GOOD

With that being said, I started slapping the Katana together yesterday. My engine options are an OS 160fx and a ZDZ40. I thought that getting the OS 160fx on there would required relocation of the elevator and rudder servos. I was PLEASANTLY suprise to find that the plane will balance slightly rear of the aft CG in the instructions with the OS160 and all three servos in the tail! I'll be able to move the battery pack around for fine tuning.

Can't wait to get it in the air...should be a killer.

very cool on new katana...... i left all my servo`s in rear as well. and it ended up with correct balance..(after moving around my 1200mh pack)

i would of moved fuel tank closer to cg...if i was thinking more at the time. (i was worried on fuel draw with my twin) but i was worried for nothing i think.
i have one weekend on it...and its very close!...... took a bit for motor to get broke in. runs nice..(going a tad bigger on prop now) not out stnnding vertical but flys awesome.........flys much better then i thought it would

lets see you spent 8 hours on rudder. so thats like 2 month on rest of plane>?(just kidding).......let me know when you get katana in the air.

I wish! I've been working on it since the middle of November! Granted, I've had several other projects jump in the way. I'm sure that I have spent over 100 hours and two 'large' on the plane. Makes the $255 (shipped) for the Katana (built & covered) seem like peanuts.

I'm going to my shop right now to see if I can get the Katana done by the weekend...stay tuned!

Elmer, where do you fly in Phoenix? My inlaws live in Glendale so when I visit I usually end up at the local field to watch. I think the field is called AMPS.

Hey Bike and Elmer,
As long as all my ducks are in order, the video on 3dbatics.com is NOT of a GSP plane, but it is Stan's Fiber Tech's 35% Katana, it is a fiberglass plane with a 105 or 106 inch wingspan, you can contact Stan for more info. I flew against this plane this July 03 in Imac, and it was awesome!!!!! Power is from a DA-100, Futaba Digitals. I believe Jeff's last name is not Sullivan like it says in the video (sorry Meyrick), but Jeffery Szueber Jr. His younger brother Matt is an awesome flyer too! I flew against Stan Kinsley (manufacturer) in Sportsman. Jeff flys in Unlimited, Matt in Advanced. Can't rave enough about this plane and the pilots.

Hey Red7fifty
Thanks for the kind words they are very appreciated! You are correct the airplane is a 35% Stan's Fiber Tech Katana-S, it is 26.5 pounds with a DA 100, all Futaba Digital servos,(Six 9451, and two 5050), Airwild servo arms, Smart-Fly equalizers, regulators, and switches. The Katana is an amazing airplane. We just finished the 40% version and have about ten flights on it and I am very happy with that one also.

Anyone have shear webs running parallel to the spars? I read on another post of wings failing, and I'd like to find out if the problem has been remedied. Any reason why I should steer clear of this plane? Thanks!

AIRPLANENUTS

I have the Katana 140... the wings are an issue. I got in contact with Jet Hobbies and they shipped me a new set of wings including a rudder at zero cost to me... I've read that with the shear web the wings were failing... If you get one and the shear web is wrong try going to Jet Hobbies for a new set...

I'm putting together a Laser 2000 and have not started the Katana yet...

Have a good one...

Hi All,

Is there an assembly manual for the CMPro Katanaon on the web somewhere?

Thanks for any links.

I haven't looked that closely at mine... I'll be breaking it out soon and I'll take a close look at the cowl...

G'day Peter,
I am new to the rcuniverse forums but in this case I can tell you that a moki 180 gives you excellent vertical performance. I have a ST3000 in mine but one of the other club members has the moki.
They are much of a muchness with the moki a little better down low. We are both use APC 18x8 props.
I have had a little problem with my kit as I built it in one night due to time restraints. Unfortunately I did not check incidences and ended up with a main wing at 2 degrees negative. Not the best to fly. After a couple of flights I changed the control horns to DuBro T horns as the supplied ones were to soft and changed the incidence to 1/2 degree positive. I used JR 591 servos all round and the balance came out as per the instructions which I think is very very consertative. I had moved it back by shifting the battery and fuel tank back a bit and it flew better. Another thing to watch is the right thrust. It says to use washers but I shaved the engine mount to the correct angle to get a tight fit on the firewall. I also used an offset of 13mm at the tip of the 18x8 propelleo to get that vertical hands off climb. As one of my fellow club members decided to turn his radio on without his peg in the board I no longer have the plane but I have ordered a new one as I have some spare parts now and know what changes to make.
I digressed but anyway the moki will be great and if you have a 2.1 even better.
Regards
Graham
