I want to start putting together a Phoenix Spitfire 40, hoping someone out there has built one and would be willing to share some information. Maybe even have some photos to share. This is my first try at starting a thread.

I built one of these a little over a year ago. I'll post some pics as soon as I can find them. Unfortunately, I didn't document the build, just the finished product.
Mine has a Saito .80 upfront with a 13x6 prop.
This is what I remember from the build -
[ul][*] The included push rods and other hardware were junk. Before I decided to scrap the hardware I actually had one pushrod shatter when I tried to bend it. The only bit of the original hardware that I used was the split-elevator joiner, everything else went in the trash. Including the nylon wing bolts.[*] The skin of the wing section around the holes for the wing bolts was very weak. I thought the bolts would just pull right through the wing under load. I made a little plate from light plywood to help spread the load over a bigger area. I also used better nylon bolts (the 1/4" socket head cap screws from RTL Fasteners with large nylon washers.)[*] I used the included engine mount at first. However, after about 6 flights I noticed it was starting to crack. It was replaced with a Saito aluminum mount.
[/ul]
I really do like this plane. I flys great, with only one bad habit - on takeoff it gets airborne without enough airspeed to really fly, then it wants to stall. Most of my takeoffs have been a quick jump to 20ft, a stalling dive to just inches off the ground, and then a real climb out.

I think I'm going to buy one this next week. I have a YS .63 to go in it. i will probably do a 3 blade 12x7. We had a guy at our field who put an OS 40 LA in his and it was a bit under powered but flew nice. I will try to post pics on my build.

Just pushed the buy button at Tower. They had a good deal, so I have one coming in a few days. Am really looking forward in putting it together. I am thinking about installing an OS 55 AX. This should give it all the power needed.

I just got mine in today. I haven't dug into the box too far yet but i'm impressed with what I've seen so far. Very minimal wrinkling on the orocote. The canopy is already attached to the fuse so no glue mess there! Retracts need to be installed so that would have been nice if they were already done but not a big deal. I might spray some Top Flite flat clear coat on it to give it the rustic look but then again she looks pretty as is. The bad things is the pilot they put in there. Why did they put that one in there? Come on Phoenix!!!

Great photos, thanks for them. I notice on the photo of the wind it looks as if it has a tear in the covering or
maybe some damage on the tip. Would you tell me about this. Also you are right in saying come on Phoenix
about the pilot they put in the plane!! Thanks for the information and photos. I am waiting for my plane to
come in sometime this week.

well. the spitfire was still manufactured for 10 years after ww2 and the pilots who flew them wore the more modern helment if thats the complaint you got against the pilot. american pilots who flew the p-51's and corsairs during the korean war between 1950-53 wore those helments also. pretend its 10 years later

Well I received my Spirfire today. I thought that was quick. Thanks Tower for the GREAT service!!! Took a look in the box and found it to be in good condition. Had a few wrinkles in the Orocote, this will not be a problem. The book said it has a sheet of decals, I could not find them. The decals have been put on the plane, the book is not up to date, I think!! Did any of you have this problem also. If anyone has some advice in putting this plane together I would be glad to hear from you. All the help can be put to good use. Hope to get started pretty soon. Would like to post some photos as I put it together. Could stand some help with knowing how to post photos.

Would like to know how one goes about posting pictures on this site. Can anyone help with this? I want to post pictures of the bulding of this plane as I put it together. When I was putting my Phoenix Extra 330 Sport together the pictures that some of the builders posted were, " Of GREAT help ". As some of you know the book that comes with this plane leaves you with needing more information.

Wingboz,
You have to hit reply on the last persons comment in order to post pics. At least thats what I found. The engine mount on this bird doesn't fit a .46 engine very well but my YS .63 fits just fine. Do you have this problem? A .40 size fits just fine also. Go figure.

The thread has been quite for awhile. Hope everyone is well and their planes are also well. : > ) I have been under the weather for a while, also have been busy with having all the flooring replaced in the house, then having the inside of the house painted. Well, as you can see, I have been as busy as a one arm paper hanger.
OH, what we will do to keep the HOUSE BOSS happy. Hope to get back into the shop before to long.

Well I think that I will be getting back to my shop again soon. Looking forward to get to work on the Spitfire. I have been hoping some of you would have given us some more photos of you planes. Also was looking to get some more feedback on
how the plane handles, on the ground, in the air are what ever. Lets try to keep this plane and thread going.
