Aw, what the Hell, I'll "Repent" later, But for now, it's solid rain for the next two days !:( The good Lord don't deduct time off a man for flying. For all we know, he might be into RC big time !:D [and he can do whatever he wants !] :D MM

Well guys no flying for me. The Hydromax 6 volt battery that I had installed for the receiver has a bad cell or something. It was not wanting to cycle properly so I decided to let my receiver do an end point test on the servos and after 10 minutes of running the battery was below 5.2 volts. No go. I have ordered some 6.6 volt LiFe batteries. I am going to switch a few planes over. I am very glad that I decided to check that. Will have a flight report next Saturday as the weather is looking GREAT for the next 10 days here!!!

MM I understand. Last year I went to Iraq and the whole month before I went the weather was awful on the weekends and days that I had off but great on the days that I had to work. :) I left and had not been able to fly for almost 5 weeks. And my wife had tried to give me every chance and the weather would never cooperate.

MinnFlyer,

You are going to have to get a pilot in that thing. It looks weird with the rear cockpit empty and it is very noticeable.

P1 - NC 14081 with owner/Pilot Robin Williams at the controls, note that the edge of the windshield is even with his chest.
P2 - NC 14081 with owner/Pilot Robin Williams at the controls, note how he fills the windshield

Good points! I regularly fly a Ultimate and it's
a very spirited tart, ah, young lady!:D
The Waco is a very graceful old girl and rewards the driver with much joy in moving between the heavens and earth in style;)

kochj,

Your method is all well and good for an Ultimate, but is not scale on a Waco (there are no parts hanging out of the trailing edge on a Waco). What Stickbuilder and I have recommended is the Scale way of doing it on a Waco. I believe that most of the guys who opt to put the aileron connecting rods on want to enhance the scale looks of the Waco. It just does not look right without them.

Retro fitting the scale fitting is a fairly simple affair by mounting the brackets on the aileron and fitting the connection rod. Your method seems to require some surgery on the plane.

The Ultimate is a much higher performance single seat plane, derived from the Pitts and is capable of manuvers not done in a Waco when both are flown in a scale manner. The Ultimate was designed as an acrobatic plane for air shows and such . The Waco was designed as a 3 passenger plane mostly for point A to B flying or just flying around the local area. Some were converted to crop dusters and some even did some barnstorming aerobatics but cannot do what the Ultimate does. That they are both bi-planes is about all they have in common, like apples and oranges, they both grow on trees.

Skillet,

I have had several failures of the Hydramax batteries recently. One turned into charcoal and the other melted the shrink-wrap off. I too, switched to LIFE batteries completely. I would recommend everyone dispose of the Hydramax batteries asap.

Details Brother Details...Where was the CG...Was the DLE 30 overpowerd? Detai;s man :)

As far as the hydramax......I started having issues with mine as well. Not even gonna question it. I'm off to get about a dozen life batts.

What's a good size batt life batt for a beast this size?

Lablover, I am going to the 6.6 2100 for all my planes. I fly mostly 60-120 size stuff. The only one that will get two of those is my 50cc Yak. 2000 or better is plenty for a plane this size IMO!

Hobbico. Tower sells them but were out of stock last week so I went on ebay and bid on one and bought two more from another dealer. You have to have a charger that is capable of charging LiFe's, but almost any newer Lipo charger will. I will need some more but that is a good start to get my planes started switching over. I am going to replace all my receiver packs. They have the capacity of lipo's without the bad traits and they hold there charge for a long time.

This is sad. I'm sitting here eating breakfast and hitting refresh to see what Minn posts

Think I'll have mine mostly done today or close :)

Sorry for the delay, I was having internet problems.

A pilot is on order - should arrive this week.

All rates and CG were as per the manual. The DLE30 is using a Xoar 18x8 prop. It has more power than it needs, but it is not really overpowered either.

It flies VERY nicely, the only thing it wouldn't do was spin - it just sort of spiraled down so I may have to move the CG back a bit.

It will do a side-slip very nicely to make landings look very scale-like.

All in all, I'm very happy with the performance.

Any more questions?

Just realized a question I wanted to ask. Is everyone using 2 different batt's for the servos as well as the ignition? A club member suggested a Single A123 for both using a IBEC? Any thoughts on this?

I'd like to know what most are using
I am doing this with an Aeroworks Sport Cub using this IBE [link]http://www.troybuiltmodels.com/items/WRCIBEFV2.html[/link] and 2 2300 A123 batteries through a JR powersafe RX [link]http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=JRPR922[/link] which allows me to use one smart fly pin and flag switch for the entire airplane. This is a fail safe switch which has NO system current running through it. It simply turns the RX and batteries on by opening a circuit when on. If the switch fails the plane simply stays on. A switch failure CANNOT down my planes. The IBE provides ignition cutoff for safety.

I have run this setup on 2 other large scale planes and not had any troubles so far.

On my WACO I'll be using the new O.S. 155 four stroke with switch glo for power to the plug.

RE: GP Waco?

A quick caution on the LIFE charger: As I understand it, you need a SPECIFIC charger for these batteries. They have a lower voltage than Lipo's so I would recommend you use a LIFE-specific charger.

I changed all my planes over and 1500 to 2000 mah LIFE batteries are plenty for up to 30cc planes.

Minn;;;; The rumor is your dad would really like to have the "Waco"..........I'm sure he knows a lot about the full scale.....

Thanks,

Minn;;;; The rumor is your dad would really like to have the ''Waco''
I talked to him on the phone last night (He's still down in Florida until next month) and after I told him how sweet it flew and sent him a few pics, he WAS sort of hinting around.

I broke it to him gently that, "no way in hell" was he getting this one! :D

Besides, I already gave him THREE other planes this year!

Hey Guys, could the problem with the Hydramax Batteries be an isolated lot issue ? I don't mean to be the opposite, but, in eleven full years I have only had one bad NIMH out of over 100 batteries. Are these not Sanyo cells ? I use a lot of the Expert packs too and have never had a melt-down failure. Would you care to enlighten my shortage of understanding here please. I run 1500 and 2000 mh packs four cells. [very rarely a 6 volter] Thanks, MM And yes, IT"S STILL RAINING !

I already got feedback from Skillet and am now looking for more suggestions.

I'm curious what everyone is using for switches for both ignition and servos. Skillet showed me the Miracle switch. I gotta say it looks like a pretty nice set up. Is this something I can use for both ign and servos all built in one switch?

Any suggestios would be great

BTW

Minn, thank yo so much for the info on your maiden flight. AWESOME

Joe

Oh yea...Another question

Is there any reason I could not use this batt (link below) as a receiver pack? Seems like a good size to fit in small places etc

RE: GP Waco?

Lablover the switch can be used for receiver and ing. That is what I am doing. They are separate wiring for each switch. The battery you have a link of seems like a good deal. They have 10 amp discharge so they will work great with the servos load.

And minn I have not had but one hydromax battery problem. I did not mean to come across as saying they had problems. I was already going to switch over to the LiFe receiver packs before that one went bad. Mainly because they hold their charge longer and better between flights. And the higher voltage is also a plus.:D:D
