RE: GP Waco?
MMN; HILL202 has a Dle 30, not a Dle 20. I have the Dle 20 in mine and it still flies awesome with plenty of power.
Thanks, |
RE: GP Waco?
Hey guys, sorry for the late flight report on the plane. I have been very busy at work and the heat down here in South Texas has been in the 100’s . But I did get to test flights in.
The Saito 125 performed great for this plane. I am turning a15 x 8 prop. The tail was of the ground with in 5’. I flew it most of the time half throttle and that is very scale looking. Full throttle and it moves. This plane is a dream to fly, I fly lots of warbirds and this plane is easy compared to flying them. Landing this plane, leave a little power on and it floats right on down on the mains. My plane weight is 13.8 lbs. Using the stock fuel tank you should get 12 to 15 mins of flying if your not hot dogging. I have flown this engine in other planes with a 16 oz tanks and get about 12 mins of good flying time. This is a good engine for this plane, as I said in my earlier post, this engine fits inside the cowl, I only cut a small hole on the bottom for my exhaust and I have Turbo 90 coming off the engine. The engine never got hot. After I get back from Bomber Field in Houston I hope to get her up again and I will try to get some video. Walt |
RE: GP Waco?
Just got my bird today. Contemplating whether to fit a DLE 20 or 30 in there. From what I've read here, it seems the way to go is 20.
Excuse me for asking, but, where does the pilot sit? Just don't want to show up at the field with a passenger and no pilot. :D Saw a club member flying his sig Waco and I fell in love instantly. Everything about the plane was just awesome. I had to have one. In the past, planes were simply planes, but this was something different. But they're no longer available from Sig, so I found this bird. Looked even sweeter. A few clicks later, I was getting free shipping, and $30 back on the mail in rebate (hopefully). So here I am. |
RE: GP Waco?
Pilot sits in the rear seat.

WindGap; Cannonball200 here, I am one of the guy's with the DLE 20 in mine. I am plenty satisfied with it's performance and it weighs 14 1/2 #'s without fuel. Several of the guy's have installed the DLE 30's as well as Saito's and other 4 strokes. All of them seem to have worked well.

RE: GP Waco?
Have a 30 in mine and it is more than enough power. I i did it over again I would do a 20!

RE: GP Waco?
Skillet92; Your cowl looks great with that 30. Looks like you have the Jtech Cessna 195 style muffler like I have on my 20. Looks really good and just think, you can hover!!!!
Thanks, Eddie |

Successful maiden!! What a great flying plane. The plane does fly light. I was impressed with the DLE 30. Plenty of power but did not seem to be over powered. It ran good and was reliable. The plane lands nice and slow and ground handling was easy.

I just want to post a quick note to cast another glowing report on this aircraft. Finally got my maiden flight in today and it flew great. I’ll post more details later on the Saito 200R3 and how it performed. I plan to go again tomorrow to enjoy things some more.
Thanks, jimm |

I was as the field for JMM's maiden flight of his Waco with the Saito 200R3. The engine is wonderful and at 50% throttle the waco will go vertical. The engine is impressively smooth along with the great sound. Harvister |
RE: GP Waco?
Model aviation's reviewer said that he used 1/3 throttle for scale flight using an OS 95ax.
This is my first scale plane. I don't have much experience setting up scale planes. I tend to just overpower my planes, and fly the wings off of em. What am I aiming for? Oh, can I get this plane to do an inverted spin? (Not scale, and please forgive me for asking) |

I found the answer to my last question in this [link=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SInyUS7dVaA]video[/link].

Windgap
If you are looking for speed and 3D performance you need to buy an Ultimate not this Waco. This plane is a slow flying performer in real life. You can perform any type of aerobatics with this plane. I am just saying that is not how this plane should be flown. My two cents.......... Walt |
RE: GP Waco?
The Saito 200R3 worked great for this model. It is listed in a couple of reviews as being able to produce ~15 pounds of thrust (depending on prop) and I can say that with a 17x6 it certainly went vertical. The aircraft weighed in and 14.8 pounds and with the way it is configured I did not have to add weight to get the CG in line. I set the CG @ 5-1/4” per the manual and that seemed to work very well.
Some of this is a duplicate post but I thought these parts were relevant for this post. The Saito 200R3 is a very sweet motor and very forgiving. I set the initial high end at 4 turns out so the first 5 minutes would be very heavily lubricated. The motor started right up after using the built-in primer spout at the carburetor’s opening. I am using the McDaniel ignition system so did not notice the #3 cylinder going cold at low RPMs. I did however test it after I ran the 4th 10 minute break-in run because of what I had read here. I removed the ignition system and started the engine with a glow starter; one cylinder at a time. The motor started at ~2500 RPM setting just as easy as if it were on all three. Then you just walk the igniter to the other cylinders (very carefully) and start the other two. I used an IR temperature gauge to judge who was running and how well. #1 and #2 ran between 150-170 degrees Fahrenheit depending on RPM. #3 would shut down and go to 90-110 after an idle below 2100 RPM. I could be running a little rich which could have caused this. I am running now at ~2-1/4 turns on the High Speed needle. All I know for sure is that problems with #3 never occurred with the ignition system. I now have the ignition set to come on at 1/3rd throttle and less and I’ve flown 6 flights (10-12 minutes each) without an issue. I have several Saito radials and use an ignition on all of them. I never worry about an ignition on the singles even the 46 seems to work fine after started. This a collection of videos showing the first flight for my new Great Planes WACO YMF-5 ARF at the local RC Aircraft field. She has real light wing loading so when it hit a bump on what was to be a high speed taxi; she went airborne. I panicked and hit full throttle which caused a torque roll but fortunately I got it level, only now at 90 degrees to the runway. Otherwise flight went well, it handled great. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QS50bYSitsE Thanks, jimm |
RE: GP Waco?
Windgap,Thanks for the video. I've been tempted on this plane but was worried I'd get tired of flying it quickly. That was a beautiful flatspin. I'm gonna do one this winter and I'll intoduce it to a new life of fun and excitement with a great big Hacker on 12s.:D

RE: GP Waco?
Well I just got done flying my GP Waco at our local Big Bird Fun Fly a couple weeks ago. The Waco is powered the with a Saito FG-30 gas 4 stroke and so far I have not had any problems with the set-up. Balanced out pretty well and sounds great in the air without the mess of glow fuel. Still breaking in the engine and I am a little nervous idling it too low in the air. I have not put the radial front on the cowling yet. If anyone else is thinking of using the Saito FG-30 let me know I would be glad to help or find out if you have had any issues. I also posted a funny in-flight video on you-tube if anyone wants a little laugh at my pilot (be sure to turn on the background music).

I got in quite a few flights today with the Waco. The only issue I had was tires. This looks like wheel pant damage but I don't think it is. The wheel pants show no signs of scrubbing. I did have quite a bit of a cross wind and was slipping it in. I was on a paved runway.
|
RE: GP Waco?
That is what it looks like, wheel pant damage. I changed my tires to DuBro 3 1/2" rubber tires. I don't like the foam tires. If you you were sliping it and had a cross wind the tires rolled on you when you it the surface. That is why I don't fly with the foam tires. That is what casing the break on your tires.
Change them out to better tires. At our flying field you are always landing in a high crosswind. That is South Texas for you, we have a paved strip also. I have seen this happen on many planes. Walt |
