RE: Larger version of the gp Super Skybolt
ORIGINAL: captain2 this the NGH GT17 gasser just installed on my GP Super Skybolt. Replacing an OS 91 4s, the plane does have some flights behind it. The GT17 mounted inverted instead of sideways using the same GP 60-120 adjustable mount. Fits well, and a lot neater, engine length is just right (5.8'') for the cowl. These pics from break-in, note that I also switched the gear for a bit more prop clearance. The OS was swinging a 14x7 APC, the 14x8 the recommended break-in prop but the NGH looks like it'll handle a 15x7/8 or 16x6 no problem. Haven't flown it quite yet, but expect the plane to be transformed with the 15 or 16'' props. I used to fly my Skybolt with an OS .91 Surpass II which turned a 14x6 at 9,800 and it was almost perfect but i always wanted a little more. The NGH should just about ideal. I thought about getting another Skybolt and putting my spare NGH into it. I'll take a 30cc sized Skybolt with a tunnel to take a canister muffler please. |

also have a the DLE20 on a 10lb. Extra. Great little engine - and it installed OK because the Extra has that 'box' in back of the firewall providing space for the CDI as well as a spot to mount a throttle servo. Not so with the GP Super Skybolt - the plane really designed for a horizontal OS 91 4s which is what I took out of it. Although the DLE is not too long to fit, getting the throttle linkage to that rear carb a real PIA on the Skybolt. I was flying the OS with a 14x7 APC which is really plenty for the plane but, of course, I wanted better vertical. The front carb NGH made it quite simple for the throttle, gives me the economy of gas, outpowers the OS by a bunch AND costs less. I had to order a new cowl becuase the old one doesn't look right after I tried to cover the openings in the side and top needed for the OS. But, in answer to your question, save for a 1" diameter hole for the muffler exit this engine could be entirely contained within the cowl. Practically, of course, a good part of the bottom of the cowl should be removed though, simply to keep the engine cool.
http://cksmac.com/yahoo_site_admin/a....176233223.pdf Am flying several of my models with gassers lately - have a Saito FA-14 .82 4 stroke gasser in a 40 size 3D plane - costs me about 25 cents for a morning of flying as opposed to $2-3 for the same plane in glow. Watch as the OSs , Saitos etc of the world start coming out with more and more small gas engines, they will have to in order to survive - the DLEs (and others) of the world are redefining our hobby almost as much as electrics are. never met any ARF: GP, H9 or anybody that does an adequate job on LG mounts - the tendency being for a 1x1" (or so) 'hardwood' block, glued with that fabulous Chinese mystery glue and not even secured to a bulkhead or two. Gotten so bad that the first thing I do with any thing I'm assembling is cut out whatever they did for a LG mount. Usually involves a relatively long piece of some good 1/4 aircraft ply extending from the firewall, several bulkheads back usually past the CG. This way the forces from that slightly botched landing don't twist out the gear block. In my case, my aluminum gear will be spaghetti b4 I break any wood.

ORIGINAL: lrglnman PCK? never heard of em. Sorry for the slow reply. PCK stands for Precision Cut Kits. Go to kitcutters.com. They offer a wide selection of kits in all different sizes. If you go to their website, you will see a notice that says they are not accepting any new orders until all current orders are filled. This notice has been on their for at least the last six months. There have been some other threads here on RCU about the business where some people have had a hard time getting the planes they ordered. David |

I'm also experimenting with the Enya Gasoline glow plug in one of my NGH's. That takes the ignition and battery weight away and reduces the overall weight by 9oz which is a good thing. |
RE: Larger version of the gp Super Skybolt
ORIGINAL: CustomPC +1 on the form factor of the NGH. The glow style really makes installation a snap. I have one of mine in a Great Planes Escapade .61 and it was literally a drop in fit. Aside from shaping the cowl cheek to clear the muffler the model required no modifications at all. I could switch it back to glow or (gasp) electric without anyone ever knowing it was once gas powered. I'm also experimenting with the Enya Gasoline glow plug in one of my NGH's. That takes the ignition and battery weight away and reduces the overall weight by 9oz which is a good thing. You mentioned 9800 rpm, 14x6 OS 91?? I flew mine with an APC 14x7 and never saw anything over 8400 rpm, a number the NGH can match with a 15x6/7 or even a 16x6. I have found that these new little gassers have quite a bit more tolerance to different prop sizes than my old bevy of 'slimers' - an obvious advantage. Still don't understand how a glow plugged gasser can even work - wouldn't there be a serious problem with preignition? |

Rcg 20 beam mount gas engine with cowl on, fits nice inside length wise but muffler a bit on the large side, dle 20 is same size roughly but with a smaller muffler so would fit even better.
