Didn't get a chance to post here last night. Heres the results of the second mod of the stock rudder. Again, I'm happy with the fact that after removeing the initial 19 sq. in. from the top, it stopped the opposite wing drop when rudder is applied. Last nights test was with an additional 10 sq. in. removed from the upper rear trailing edge. Bringing total rudder area down to 56 sq. in. To my surprise it still has plenty of authority, but did nothing to help the way that it dives to the wheels when rudder is applied. Time to start looking elsewhere ar simply mix it out on the redio. The new rudder will be basically the shape of where its at now, with some additional area added to the bottom and lower trailing edge to increase total area up to app. 65 sq. in. which will still be 20 sq. in. less than stock form. First pic is stock, second is mod #1 and third is mod #2.
Since the initial up line test flights to determine the required thrust angles and now, after flying a couple weeks with 4 degrees of right thrust, it seems that it could use one more degree right. Also, uplines are good, but with more time dedicated to hovering, I find in a hover it favors the wheel side. It hangs best, angled back, about five degrees towards the canopy, which right now, appears to need some up thrust angle. With every adjustment being relevant, perhaps it will help the wheel dive on knife edge. To be continued, Joe |
RE: u-can-do 60
good report Joe. I think soon you will have this planes bad rudder habits worked out. then I will have to ask you to send me the design so I can mod mine ;)
I am new to mixing things on a radio so I will have to research that aspect of this planes setup. matt |

RE: u-can-do 60
Every now and then you have one of those days where nothing goes right. Today was mine. BTW LL, great shots and congrats on a successful maiden flight. Joe, nice project completion and great follow-up report. I am going to come back to this and consider reshaping mine.
I went to the field with the Pitts and the Giles. First of all the Pitts would not start. not sure what the problem is, but this is the first time I have had any problems with the DA-50. I ran a tank of fuel through on the test stand after doing the replumbing on the fuel lines, and converting to a fuel dot. I even got the Megatron starter out and she kept flooding. I think I have an ignition or plug problem. After hours of sweat and frustration I put the plane away and decided to fly my Giles for a third time. I went up, had a great flight and called out landing left to right. and then BANG - Out of no where this trainer ends up right in front of my path and I cut right through him, tearing an aileron and wing tip off my Giles. This was my first midair. I thought I was going to get the Giles down safely, but I lost control and she went in hard. The plane is history, but I was able to salvage all my gear and the engine. Needless to say the trainer was histreoy in a flash. Thsi guy has been flying for a few years so not a rookie pilot. No finger pointing. It all happened so fast. WQe bnoth lost an airplane. I am still bumbed. I really liked that plane and this was my third one. I had assembled four, one being for my son and the others for me. I am now done with the G.P. Giles . No more for me. Time to move on. Yep, this was not a good RC day for me. Glad it's over. |

Roger..
Sorry to hear about the Giles, i know exactly what you mean about those " Everything goes wrong" days ...yesterday was a sort of " lots of little niggly things not 101% right " type day ...coupled by the bigest mistake you can allways make ...i was rushing to ge to th field for 3 ..3:30 a good couple of hours late. Lady Lucan had loads of work to do , and the kids were starting WW III in the Pool....when i got to the field i was'nt focused at all...i shoul have stayed home. Only just escaped, i should have Known better. Anyway, w/end over .[:o]..few more pics from Saturdays doo...fantastic day, but, at he field yesterday we all said the same thing... Nothing was going to better that display by the SAA 747....nothing . Not the Jaguar's, nor the Harrier, C130, Red Arrows...our models in the Marquee seemed so trivial at a event like that. some pics for ya .. Oh,:) at the field yesterday, and this is supposed to be a reasonable, respectable club...some 200 members...no one knew what the UCD was.:)...lot of interest though..:) |
RE: u-can-do 60
David, congratulations on your UCD maiden!!
Joe, many thanks again for your PM assistance and encouragement. Roger, Sorry to hear about your Giles, chin up, now you can order a WildHare!! That DA 50 will work in that airframe too. JW, What's up buddy?? Love your new Twist!! I apologize to all for my lack of participation lately. Unfortunately I am dealing with some pressing family issues at this time. My UCD in finally nearing completetion;). The sad part is that I now must set it aside for a week or two[:o]. Just wanted to take a minute or two to express my congratulations and condolences to those of you involved. I have been keeping up with all of your posts, but in all honesty have not felt much like making any kind of contribution. I will be flying to Upstate New York with my wife at a moments notice, sometime within the next two weeks. No computer access there so will touch base after we return. Good luck and happy flying to all. Brian..... |

RE: u-can-do 60
LL, Great pics, looks like a good time was had by all. Great to see your work on the UCD was such a show stopper. Any interest in the Cyclone? I think your delay in posting was due to all the smileys.
Roger, its a sad day, considering all your effort with past and present Giles. I was at that point with a .60 Stinger and while looking for a replacement Stinger is when I discovered the newly arrived UCD at the LHS and its been a whirlwind of pleasure ever since. Matt, I think there is something in the water. J Dubya, when did you get out? Short sentence for good behavior? Brian, Good to hear from you. Keep chipping away at it and next thing you know, it will be up. Joe |

On a side note I normally dont touch the needles once they are set. it seems as the weather has changed they are need adjustment which brings me to the current situation. matt |
RE: u-can-do 60
Matt, the Saito 100 factory settings on both needles are 1-1/2 turns out. On the low end setting, make sure that the throttle is closed and the throttle trim is zero before running the screw in, or just close the throttle manually which would be better. Open the low end 1-1/2 turns as well as the high end. Once started, with 1/8 increments turn the low end clock wise, in, and check idle and response. Between each adjustment run it up shortly and adjust again. You will notice the idle raising each time as well as smoothing out and getting quicker on the transition from low to full throttle. You should find it reaching a point of idle first and then, with further adjustment, the transition will work out. Joe
P.S. forgot, on the 2 strokes the low end setting is just the opposite. Turn it out to lean and in to richen. |

RE: u-can-do 60
Got the landing markers on and am waiting impatiently for the cargo jet to land in my parking lot. Yesterday I ordered a YS 110 from Chief Aviation and had it overnighted. This has got to be 'the more' that I have been looking for. Either the Saito 100 is under propped with the 15/4 or just tired from hundreds of flights. Runs great with plenty of power, but I want to hang at 1/2 throttle not 3/4 to full. Didn't see much more from the 30% heli, aside from it running much hotter and tending to lean out with every increase in temperature. Where is J Dubya? I need some expert YS advice. Joe

Joe,
Nice going with the YS power:D. It's going to make me wonder though how all of the mods will be re evaluated. Let me know if you want to get rid of the Cline regulator, as I'm guessing you won't be needing it anymore. I'll keep updated on the posts. Brian.... |
RE: u-can-do 60
Hey JW, I like your avitar. I just purchase the Soucy to replace my Giles that went in this past Sunday. I too have some work to do.
|
RE: u-can-do 60
Joe, I am thinking about painting the canopy on my Soucy Extra and saw on one of the earlier post on this thread that a guy used Pactra car body paints. Do you have to use a spray gun or can you brush this stuff on easily or is it a challenge to work with? If you have another recommendation please advise. I am on a weight loss kick on this airplane so going as light as possible. See what you started!
Also, I can't seem to get any good info about using a 6 volt battery pack without a regulator. Not using digitals but would like to feel confident that my decision to not us e a voltage regulator on with Hitec 635 servos and a Futaba 148 8 channel Rx is going to be OK. I read on the Futaba site that it's OK to use a 6 volt pack, but not much info on whether a voltage regulator is really necessary. |
