RE: GP Super Stearman

hey all you RC'ers

i pick up mine in 2 weeks.
i was wondering if there is any hardware in the box that i might have to changed eg. (aileron hinges) to make it a excellent flyer.
and also if there is anything i can do to make it look more scale and realistic

thanks!

Change the tail wheel, mine broke after 24 flights, the wire is too small, I am now going to a different system. I also put Robarts hinges, as I have a FPE 40cc in it. It weighs 15 lbs, and I cannot really see how a 120 can fly this plane well, as the 40 cc is perfect, not overpowere.

cheers!
how many robart hinges are needed?
would you have any idea wheather the super stearman had navigation lights or landing lights?

I put 3 hinges on each elevator and 4 on the rudder and 4 each on each ailoron. re lights and all that no idea.

forgot to mention, that I sealed all between the leading edge and trailing edge with monokote. This way no turbulance caused by the space between the two surfaces.

RE: GP Super Stearman

i picked mine up last week it looks awsome. ive started putting it together and have had a major problem! i test fitted the wing joiner several times on the bottom wing. all seemed to go well, so i applied wood glue on it and inserted one end. it went down most of the way and then came to a stop, it would not go in or out . i worked quickly to try and fix it, putting some much force on it trying to pull it out and it would not budge. so now i have a wing joiner stuck half way in the wing. ive peeled back the sheeting and tried to chissle it out but no suckess. my next option is to take it to a pro builder of r/c planes and get him to cut the wing off and rebuild it.

any suggestions would be so good!!!
or an explination of why it happened!

you should of used 30 minute epoxy, that way it gives you the time to move it around. I never use CA or 5 minute in places I cannot see. Before did you do the fit to make sure it all went well?Rather than pay to have someone buuild a new halft call Great Planes and see if they would have a half wing, maybe a return from damage shipping. You never know.

I have a PT-17 which is very similiar with a Saito 120 and it flys great! I managed to get the weight down to 13 pounds dry. What a great airplane!

I have a FPE 40cc gas engine, lot's of power, goes straight up as long as I want. As the real one also has a lot of power to do the maneuvers.

I bet it does. I think we have very different flying styles. I did not want a 3D stearman and I sure don't have that kind of performance but I am real happy with this setup. I have a DP Ultimate in mind down the road for better aerobatics. I do prefer scale like flying though.

Don't forget the Super stearman is an aerobatic plane, much faster than the regular stearman. I don't use the power all the time, fly mostly scale, but also the sound of the gas engine, is much different thatn the glo.

good idea,

the glue i used is PVA which takes a few hours to dry thats what i didnt understand why it got stuck. the builder i would get is a flyer at the local club and does all our reparir for free (bottle of wine). i might try the (damaged in shipping). hopefully it works.

great pics, both stearmans look great.

Sorry to here about your wing. I would also asks the "Elders" in my club about what to do. Some of them are MORE than willing to give advice.

Enclosed are some pics of my Stearman with a TME smoke pump. This is an inexpensive way to get attention. The smoke makes this plane even more fun.

Good luck to all.
Talk soon.

great pics, i bet the smoke will draw alot of attention. one of thee builders in our club said to cut the joiner down so it will fit into the other end as normal. but because its the bottom wing which is angled im not sure it will work.

I could sure use a clear pic of the throttle linkage setup for the G-26! I believe the standoffs are going to be approx. 3/4". did anybody use the linkage kit made for this? anything special I should know about? how did you get the engine measurements to center the engine on the firewall? fess up! thanks in advance.

mine flys on a saito 100! no probs just be careful on to not to stall will loop in level flight. flys at full power though most of the time

Finished mine up this afternoon. Here are some pics of the finished product. Plan on flying in the next day or so if the weather holds out down here. Hurricane Dennis is on it's way.

I just received mine yesterday. Using my OS 120. I was going to start on it this weekend, BUT, we are smack in the middle of the projected path of hurricane Dennis! Hope my planes don't get blown away. We survived Ivan last year, maybe we'll get lucky again.

I plan to change the wheels. A guy at our field made a less than perfect landing with his last weekend and one wheel broke in half. It looks just like a chocolate covered cake donut! anyone else have wheel problems?

Yes, mine after 150 flights, the wheel broke in two. So now I have the Lite Wheels. I am attaching the two Stearmans in our club. The one on the left is a friend of mine he has a Saito 150 and it flies well, also he went to the wheels with the caps, and closed the front cockpit and covered it. It looks really neat. Mine is the one with the hwheel pants.
I am even flying IMAC with it. I have a FPE 40cc gas, and I tell you it is great.

I finnally flew mine yesterday. all I can say is "excellent"! flys better than I thought it would. I put in the G-26 for power and it flys so realistic. looks great in the air as well on the ground. a big hit at the field! :D:D:D

Thought I would let you guys know that the Saito 170R3 fits perfectly in the cowl. I'm using a Electro Dynamics on board glow igniter and it looks awsome on the ground and in the air. The 170R3 provides plenty of power and required ZERO lead to balance the airplane! The sound is........WOW! I'm using a collector ring exhaust from Keleo. I did have a problem with the aileron covering. It was very loose and required lots of heat to shrink tight. Other than that it went together great! I opted for four aileron servos and now wish I hadn't. The wiring to the upper wing is a real pain and distracts from the looks. Oh well...

I haven't been in here a while but mine is done and has about a dozen flights on it. I got a Belia 18X6 prop from Aircraft Internal and it's bolted to the RCIgnitions G26. The prop really sets off the plane but I will tell you this it slows it down a bit compared to a Mejzlik 18X6. I also have a Slimline smoke muffler with the TME smoke systems as this plane just screams for smoke.

I originally had quite a bit of adverse yaw but once I got the mechanical link straightened out between the ailerons it made a huge difference.

BTW, with this setup it's somewhat heavy at 15.5 pounds ready to fly with fuel (12oz) and smoke (12oz) but OH what a looker [X(]

The most common question I get is "when ya gonna fly it" when I take it to the field. Then out come the camera's :)

RE: GP Super Stearman

I'm considering this model (or the regular Stearman) now for electric conversion using an AXI 4130/20 on 8S with an 18x8 prop. I'm running the motor in a Seagull Edge 540 at the moment. I have a small car though so I will have a problem with the large one-piece 182 cm wings. The edge fits nicely in the passenger seat with the 162 cm wing really squeezing in there. Do you think the wing can be made two-piece without compromising the structure at the joiner. Are the rigging wires just for show or functional?

stuffer 07-14-2005 01:46 PM

RE: GP Super Stearman

just for show. it would be possible to make them 2 piece. a little cut here and there to make a joiner block for each wing. good luck!
