RE: GP Super Stearman
Hi how does your stearman fly with the o.s. 1.20.I,m thinking of putting a os 1.20 on mine but it seems a zenoah g-26 is a good engine for this plane.
thanks,Fred |
RE: GP Super Stearman
I am planning on using a O.S. 1.08 in my GP Stearman. The question is will a Bisson Pitts muffler fit within the cowl?

ORIGINAL: ffdq Hi how does your stearman fly with the o.s. 1.20.I,m thinking of putting a os 1.20 on mine but it seems a zenoah g-26 is a good engine for this plane. thanks,Fred The OS120 flies it very scale like and that's the recommended engine BUT, even the manual says you will need 18oz's of lead up front in the weight box they give you to balance it which is directly in line with a G-26 that has been lightened by RCIGN1 (Ralph Cunningham). He is a member here so just shoot him a PM. I use his converted engines with my GP Stearman turning a Belia 18X6 prop and it looks good and flies very well here's a pic or three |
RE: GP Super Stearman
Hi Bill, thanks for the input info.I talked to Ralph and I,m going with one of his g-26.Your plane looks very nice, how does it fly with Ralphs conv.also what kind of prop and muffler do you have on it.
thanks Fred |
RE: GP Super Stearman
Stuffer, what did you come up with for the throttle linkage and the centering of the engine on the fire wall.I have a g-26 I,m putting on my stearman and have the same question.
thanks Fred |
RE: GP Super Stearman
MGA,
I too have a FPE 40cc which I would love to put in this plane. I notice you are useing a pitts style muffler instead of stock. Which one is it? I see it fitts in the cowl nicely. Is it capable of accepting smoke system? Thanks Craig |
RE: GP Super Stearman
ffdg, the throttle linkage wound up being a pretty much straight shot throught the firewall. I hooked up a manual choke and put it below the throttle. the centering of the engine was a little tricky but I put marks on the firewall to locate the center of the precut hole and put marks on the engine for the center and lined them up. I stood the plane on its tail and drilled throught the mount holes into the firewall. being carefull not to move the engine while I did this. all in all it worked out very well. the stock muffler worked out well also and is pretty quiet!

I stuck a saito 1.80 on my stearman. The performance is unbelievable. I would however recommend mounting a 1.80 horizontally. I mounted mine inverted and it took a perry pump to make it run properly.

RE: GP Super Stearman
How much nose weight did you have to add with the Saito 180?

RE: GP Super Stearman
Guys,
Stearman's look awesome. MGA, the pilot that you put in yours looks much better than the stock one in the kit. What pilot figure did you use? My Stearman has an RCV 120 and I'm going to maiden it this weekend.( my brother in law is the test pilot) I put in standard servos in the lower wing only. What high torque servos, is anyone using in this configuration?. I also had red Baron pizza, graphics printed. Will post pictures soon. I also replaced the tailwheel bracket with a Chip Hyde aluminum bracket. Mark Franke |
RE: GP Super Stearman
Stuffer, thanks for the info, helps me alot. What can you tell me about #1 what size fuel tank Im thinking a du bro 20 oz. and #2what size prop is the best,Im reading anywhere from 16/8,17/6,18/6 I have a pitts type muffler so Im hoping for about 9,000 rpm,or so maybe 17/6.
also did you use rubber mounts for vibs.from the engine. thanks Fred |
RE: GP Super Stearman
I used the stock tank but changer the stopper to gas. I can fly 30 minutes on that tank. I use a wood 16x8 zinger for the looks. no vibration mount. I get about 8500 RPM after break in. flew it last night after several weeks of not flying it and it just reinforced why I bought this plane. SWEET!

RE: GP Super Stearman
Hi Stuffer good mourning, how did you hook the manual choke, that looks it could be a problem to choke it.Im going to start the the model on tues.Just fix my shoestring and now free to start the super stearman.
thanks Fred |
RE: GP Super Stearman
I wish I had pics but I made a small standoff bracket from 3/32 ply and mounted it to the firewall simular to the cowl mounts. I ran the left over throttle nyrod through that and to the choke. it comes out just below where the throttle comes out and all I have to do it push fwd on the choke rod to choke it and then pull it aft to turn it off. the detents hold it open and closed. I used and old on off push pull switch rod for the handle. it screwed right in to the nyrod.

ORIGINAL: ffdq Hi Bill, thanks for the input info.I talked to Ralph and I,m going with one of his g-26.Your plane looks very nice, how does it fly with Ralphs conv.also what kind of prop and muffler do you have on it. thanks Fred Sorry it took so long to respond to you, I have been really busy. It actually had problems with pretty severe adverse yaw at first. This seemed strange to me as I was very careful to get both the top and bottom ailerons to work in unison. I wanted to keep as scale a look as possible but I then took off the interlinks and went with 4 servos and it all worked out in the end. Guess I didn't have the ailerons set as I had hoped. As far as the engine, if you use the recommended Mejzlik 18X6 it pulls this plane very well and in flight not much more than half throttle is the norm, but I bought a Belia 18X6 which is about the same weight but a little wider blade. This prop really sets off the look of the plane azs it matches perfectly, but it really loaded the G26. I haven't tach'd it in a while but I think I lost around 300rpm. It still flies very well, it just does not spool up as quick as the Mejzlik did. Since the pics I posted I have added smoke and added the upper wing servos. This plane just screams for smoke so I was more than happy to give it to it. All in all it's a sweetie. The standard thing I get at the field is "when ya gonna fly it" and once I start it, then out come the camera's and then I get "do a low and slow pass with smoke" and things like that. Oh yea, wheel land this bad boy, try to 3 point it and it will bounce. I found that not matter how slow I got on landing, greasing it in to a 3 point was almost next to impossible, but since I went to wheel landing it, greasing it has become the norm. Besides it looks better watching the tail settle down on it's own. My complete setup is: RCIGN1 converted G-26 Slimline Smoke muffler Belia 18X6 prop (Aircraft International sells them) Hitech 5645 servos on all control surfaces JR1100MaH on the ignition NOS Battery 2400 6.0V on the receiver JR649 PCM 9 channel receiver Smart-Fly optical ignition cutoff Manual choke Wing Incedences: Stab: 0 degrees Bottom wing: 0 Degrees Top wing: -1 degree Total plane weight with fuel and smoke oil is 16.5lbs |

Guys
we had the maiden flight today. RCV 120 with 18 /12 prop. Took of in 15 feet. Wants to climb despite good CG with full down trims. Will add about 2 dgrees down thrust. |
RE: GP Super Stearman
I was there for the maiden @ NVRC and it was a beautiful flight. Definitely no power issue with the RCV engine, but boy do they sound funny. Good luck with more flights of the Stearman!

one more photo. Struts and cabanes were painted red. Graphics made custom by die hard graphics. Is anyone else using down thrust or adusting the incindence of the top wing? Thanks |
RE: GP Super Stearman
Hi guys I,m back, can anybody tell me what to use to make the 3/4'' spacers to put behind the engine and do I need 12 '' from the engine and the reciver.
thanks Fred |
RE: GP Super Stearman
you can use hardwood dowles. I used phenolic spacers. only because I had some available. hard wood will work just fine. Lowes has them so it's cheaper that way. just cut them all the same.
|
RE: GP Super Stearman
Stuffer,Hi thanks for getting back so fast.Any type of hardwood like oak?How far away from your engine is your reciver and batt. Also I used the 12'' exts like the plans call for but it seems like they are too short.Sould I use 6'' on the reciver.one more thing, what are you using for wheels.
thanks Fred |
RE: GP Super Stearman
oak is good. coat them with thinned epoxy to fuel proof them and it adds strength. the reciever and battery are mounted per the instructions. I used "nyrod" for the throttle to eliminate interferrence. A PCM reciever wouldn't hurt either. I don't remember what extentions I used but if 12" is too short go to 16". I believe thats the next standard length. the wheels could be changed out for the same size in the "low bounce" type. if nothing else, the black coating on the wheels comes off with time and looks bad.
|
RE: GP Super Stearman
To all,
I saw a set of the stock wheels after about two weeks of pavement landings here and they were more like white foam doughnuts. I tracked down a set of air filled dubros before I even opened my planes box. It sits on them in my garage throughout the week and then for hours on end at pavement field 100+ degrees. No flat spots and perfect 3 points all day long. Well, except gusting crosswind landings but, even thoses have little to no bounce. And believe me I am not the best pilot. Just my 2 cents. Stangevil29 |
RE: GP Super Stearman
Stuffer,HiI will go with the oak and coat of epoxy thinned down and the dubro 4" wheels inflat.type.
thanks Fred |
