RE: GP Super Stearman

This is the driver I'm using. It's a pulsed system, tied into the throttle channel. I have it adjusted so that it only comes on at low throttle. It probably shuts of at 4000 rpm. I usually turn the throttle up untill the light goes off (no glow) then reduce throttle by 1 click to start it.It runs at a high idle this way, only 4 or 5 clicks up from idle. So far it's great. I mounted it in the nose above the fuel tank. Made a drawer so that I can get to it, and mounted the charge jack and indicator light on the drawer front, which is the front cockpit dashboard. i posted pictures in this thread when I did it, I'll have to see if I can find them.

I just looked. If you want to see my setup, It's post 969 on page 39 of this thread.

rexracer,
I noticed that you are using the 4 servo setup. How is that working for you...any problems to speak of?

Works great with std. 3004 ball bearing servos. Roll rate is at least 2 revs per second on the specified high rates, maybe even 3. If I wass to build another, or if I need a new top wing in the future, I would put the Y connector inside the wing, and put the exit hole to the side near the cabane strut. As it is, I think I hid it pretty well with white vinyl tape.

For those of you who used the Saito 150 in the Stearman…what muffler did you use? The stock muffler hits the firewall.

Oops! I meant an on board remote glow plug starter that uses a on board battery. I'm using a Satio 150 4 stroke. Anyone know of a good one?

I just got mine! Turned up the heat on my iron and had all the wrinkles out in about one hour. I'm going to try to get replacement tire from Tower. I think the Dubro 4" low bounce should work good. The tires that came with it bounce like a Super Ball! I ordered a Brillelli 47cc gas engine. More power less weight. It will give me a little extra kick in the pants when I need it. I will all so be installing smoke.

When you land, you have to slow that puppy down. If you stall it at the ground, it won't bounce at all. In my video, in the above post, im still using the stock foam wheels. Im not going to replace them until there wore out, but yes, they are pretty cheap.
Landing is the hardest part of this hobby, and you cannot practice it too much. I probably land at least 10 times per flight. Landing is my favorite part of this hobby. :D

Shubova,
A couple of pages back one of the fellows had some shots of the McDaniels RC glow driver. I have the Mcd 466 ordered for my Pica WACO, if it works out
I'll probably order another one (with out the wall charger) for my Stearman. Have you flown your Stearman with the 150 yet?

Thanks for all the info guys.
No I have not flown my Stearman (with Saito150) yet but a couple of weeks ago I went to a scale fly in at a local club. There was three Super Stearmans there. Two with oversized engines, one had a Saito 3 cylinder. I don’t remember what the other one was. They both said it was too much power. The other was using a Saito 150. The owner with the 150 said he loved it. It had all the power you would want or need and by the flights I saw it seemed that way. He also said he didn't have to use the box for extra weight. He used very little weight to balance it.

Hey guys,
Does anyone have any good (close up) pictures of how they installed the turtle deck? The pictures in the instructions don’t show much detail.

RE: GP Super Stearman

I guess I should spend some time reading my notes. From what I have read in the previous pages of this thread the turtle deck hasn’t been easy to install.

Thought I might pass this bit of info on to anyone that is interested in a balancing tool. This one looks like it would be great for bi planes http://www.ezbalancer.com. I saw it at the AMA show a couple of years ago…a very good idea. I’ve got a CAD drawing that I have been working on, I plan on building my own (not for sale). It uses the same basic idea as the EZ Balancer. I just can’t afford to buy one. I just have to put my hands and that piece of meat between my ears to work.

Thanks for all the help…this is a very cool thread!

freeonthree,
Thanks! I was working on the previous post when you submitted the pictures. It seems people have either cut the black part away as you did or just left it and only cut it to fit. I like the way you did it…back to the shop. Close to having this done, I hope to have it at the field this weekend.
Thanks again,

Did you use canopy glue to hold it down?

My friend Greg cut the turtledeck out and glued it on with canopy glue, then taped in down for a while. came out really nice, but they dont reach all the way to the cockpit, which would look better I think.

You've had more success with the wrinkles, than me. I finally have the fuselage and wings done, but I'm still having trouble with the flight control surfaces.

Does anyone have pics of their replacement tail wheel setup?

RE: GP Super Stearman

Use the pin hole method if you haven't already tried it, to get the wrinkles out. Putting pin holes next to the wrinkles (were the wood is) will allow the air to excape when your ironing them out. I used the heat gun (blower) on some of the bigger ones then finished with an iron. I didn't try to get them all in one try. I would put it down and did something else than tried it again later or a day or two. If you can't get all the wrinkles out call GP, they know there is a prolbem with the covering. They have been allowing a lot of people return different parts.

There is a few pictures of tail wheel set ups through out this thread. There's one on pg 42. I'm bought the one from Sullivan...http://www.sullivanproducts.com/LandingGearContent.htm. I haven't installed it yet but it looks like I will have to adjust the height some how.
Good Luck!

I had my iron almost all the way up, and I did not use a sock. I just touch it lightly. Becarfull not to melt it. Try it out on some scrap monokote. I sharpen my T pin to a real fine narrow point. I try to keep my pin holes very small. Good luck

Thanks for the help, guys. I'll give the pinhole method a shot.

In the meantime, I've test fitted the Stearman in my new trailer, trying to figure out a layout for the models that will go on the floor.
