I didn't use any paint. I cut red ultracote by hand and ironed it on. It went on great and even adhered to the cowling good.

Pettit,

Perhaps straight up is the wrong term, can you do a big loop from level flight. Sounds like you are are having some fun.

Builder Jim,

Have you tried the yellow rattle can for a paint match on the cowl?

I forget who,

There is plenty of room to get a Dremel tool with a fiberglass cut off tool inside the fuse and hog out the servo tray to accept larger servos, however it makes the pre-drilled holes un-usable. I glued 1/2 X 1/2 hardwood beams clear accross and made new servo holes, works fine and looks nice.

I forget who II,

The four strokes with exhaust extension pipes sound about the same as one with a muffler. The pipes (at least Saito is) are available with pressure taps that work as well as a muffler tap.

Also check out macspro.com for some new 90 degree exhaust fittings and other exhaust parts for the 4 strokes.

I forget who III,

Ailaron gap, too late for me, mine are glued in. But, my eyeball says that if one were to use a straight edge and trim the overhang from the top wing trailing edge right to the edge of the exposed ribs where the curve is you could get the throw without a gap. Either paint the exposed wood or cover with Cub Yellow Ultracoat, it matches perfectly and the seam is almost invisable. (Had to use some on a flap and patch a couple hanger rash holes).

Question - Picked up a new Saito 182 twin today. Fit is fine, lots of room. What a piece of art, twin carbs, four plugs polished to the nthhh degree, wish I could have a transparent cowl, he, he.

Question - Problem is I do not want a piece of wire sticking out both sides of the cowl for the needle valves. Does anyone know a way around this? Small flex cable like a speedometer cable? some kind of rack and pinion gear? Stumped so far.

Tail brace wire tip. Use Du-bro part #300 turnbuckles for a great look.

Also thinking of mounting a big fuel tank on the cabin floor at the CG. Need a remote fuel pump, any suggestions?

Have I gone electric? Big 6 volt pack for the rx, big batteries for the glow driver, batteries for the nav lights, and a battery for the smoke system. Perhaps I should hook all these together and hang an electric motor under the cowl.

Jack

Brian,
I tried some Lustre Kote clear on my H9 cub which has the same covering material to see if it would work and it was fine as I had considered using their color but.....as they say, if it's worth doing-it's worth doing right. Besides, I have a new HVLP gun i'm wanting to try. [8D]

To John Redsox:

The 160 doesn't need mufflers or muffler pressure. It's really quiet on straight pipes.

The carb on the OS 160 is quite low and the tank has to be mounted lower than the shelf that's already there.

Mount the tank as close to the floor as you can get it.

I cut the original tank floor completely out and used the plywood piece in the kit as a new floor mounted 2" lower.

For exhaust pipes, I used chrome plated brass tubing that's designed to hook up a commode to a water valve in the bathroom.

It's a friction fit over the curved OS pipes, and can be bent easily by hand without kinking.

It's not the braided stuff, it's the solid shiny tubing.

Plus it's a heck of a lot cheaper than those OS extensions!

To Dr. Pepper:

Yes, a big loop is easily done from level flight, but a slight dive looks a lot better. The secret is large diameter, low pitch props.

Also, take a look at the level of the carbs in relation to the crankshaft. It seems to be a lot higher.

Will they clear the cowl?

For adjustment, affix a pair of 4-40 bolt heads on long tubes or wires that almost make it out of the cowl. Use a ball driver to adjust them.

A pair of small holes may look better than chunks of wire sticking out.

Sorry Pettit-

Another question. Is the engine a pumped system since the tank is lower than the carb? Otherewise, how does the engine get fuel?

pettit 08-12-2004 07:35 AM

RE: Dave Patrick super cub

On the OS 160 twin, the carb level is beneath the cylinders.

The tank centerline is just above the spray bar in the carb.

Good old suction pulls fuel into the carb.

OK Guys. Got my 150 Saito mounted with a major amount of help from my friend and Master Builder Luv Bipes (thanks again!!!!!!) Didn't need to add to the extension blocks to get the 6 3/4" that I needed to clear the cowl.
HOWEVER, FOR ALL YOU GUYS THINKING ABOUT USING THE SAITO 1.50 IT WILL NOT FIT IN THE COWL (despite what Dave says) WITHOUT CUTTING SOME OF THE COWL FOR CLEARANCE. We tried mounting it at an angle and that made it worse. SO BEWARE. Also because of the carb location on the 150 you will need to adjust the needle valve from the bottom of the cowl. You cannot flip the carb because you will not be able get the throttle push rod past the tank if you do.

Question: where on earth are you guys openning the bottom for cooling? There is really not enough room between the mounting holes?

Brylee, yes white ultra coat worked good, 400 wet sand sprayed two coats, came out great! also reenstalled the servo tray and purchased two jr servos and thet fit, lowering the tank platform today, waitin on the spinner, Ive also will clear coat the cowl this weekend. thanks jim

Pettit & Company.

I have used the 4-40 trick before, just trying to get away from any holes in the cowl sides. Starting to feel like I am making a mountain out of a mole hill. Not using the plane for contests, just fun fly.

Must be trying to emulate Bud "Perfect Floats" Faulkner.

The carbs clear just fine with the engine right side up, carbs on top. Do you suppose it makes any difference which way the engine is mounted, up or down??

Also like the idea of removing the tank mounting plate to install a larger tank but am worried about fuel draw with the tank that low. Would feel better with some type of pump, but exhaust pressure may be OK, what do you think?

Downside of the Saito is that it is a thristy sucker at 2 oz/min at full power, or so I am told. A SWAG says about 15 minutes on a 24 oz tank in normal flying.

He,He, that's funny dr. pepper :D almost afraid to fly them!
Boy...would they ever look good on the super cub as a hangar queen!!

OK, STARTED MY 160 YESTERDAY, SWEET!!!! DID EVERYTHING MR PETTIT SUGUESTED, LOWER TANK MOUNT, 18/6 PROP, COMMODE TUBE EXHAUST, MAY HAVE TO CLAMP THEM? NOW IN THE PROCESS OF WIRE PLACEMENT IN THE FUZE FOR CLEAN INSTALLATION.

Nice jim-

I have the same setup and mine will get started today. I bought the headers and the OS extensions for the muffler. I didn't know Pettit's trick until after I bought them. Look forward to your flight comments.

MIGHT WANT TO READ PRIOR POSTING ON THAT INSTALL THINK THE CARBS ARE AN ISSUE, DONT KNOW IF IT WOULD RUN INVERTED?

RE: Dave Patrick super cub

Jim Rose,

The Saito fits just fine with the carbs up. Don't worry about it. Lots of room left to right for glow driver.

Bud, I thought your last floats were great, but what A fantastic job you did on the wheel floats!!!!!!!!!!! Looks almost real. You do however have the N numbers wrong.

Scanner and I do not get along well, will try to send larger photos of the real thing.

If you can get a little closer on the exhaust that would be great. here's a link that will keep you busy for a while. Enjoy.

OKguys , these planes are looking real!, bud youve almost out done yourself, dr pepper , your`s is great looking, wish my son could have posted piks, but we didnt take the time, or just plain forgot, hey another tip, the commode ext`s to keep them on . use locktite sleeve retainer the green tube, must be for sleeve`s like in cyclinder to block this stuff will hold them on, mine wants to loosen. you get this at NAPA, if it`s not in stock they can order it , worth the time. this thread is dropping back pretty good nobody is updating, oh, my plane cant fly till mid sept, sons do this part got to go

Jim, wish mine would look that good when finished! I too would like to see more updates on who's doing what with theirs. I ran across an item I forgot I had....a low fuel warning system from Kavan, had it on my helicopter years ago and it still works like new. Don't know if they are still made, bought mine in the 70's. Guess where it's going? You can set it for any level in the tank you want. Just tie it into my receiver battery with a y and when the light starts blinking it's time to land. I love toys!

Wow, that would be cool, will look into and I too love the toys, dont think after running the 160 that weight will be an issue, with toys thanks for the update, and guys hit us with your goodies!!!!!

You guys that own these planes do you think a RCS 140-180 or a Roto 25-35 (RC Showcase gas motors) would fit in the cowl completey. Nothing wrong with the OS 160 but gas would be nice. I'm not sure R/E the Saito 182 heard they're kinda of finicky and two carbs sounds like too much hassle.

Bud Faulkner 08-18-2004 04:16 PM

RE: Dave Patrick super cub

T bob, rather than explain the problem with gas, if you go back and read my posts somewhere between page 1 and 6 I talked about the RCS engines. The only one that will fit is the 140 and that is real close...the roto and 180 is too large. That's why I finally chose the OS160.
