RE: Dave Patrick super cub
That looks WHITE in the photo?
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
P-51
you can buy it in yellow, white or ARC |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
ahhhhh, I thought they only came in the yellow.
Thanks! |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
I saw it at his booth at Joe Nall. Great looking plane! What engine are you going with?
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
DP always makes beautiful planes... only for the extremly patient or lucky!!!!
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Man, that is sharp.
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Not sure on the engine....want gas but don't want to cut the cowl, checking out gassers now. I bought a G26 for it but too big. I'm looking at the RCS 140 or maybe the Roto 25 from RC Showcase. Both beam mounted.

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Keep us posted on the assembly, I want to hear more about it.
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Will do hill202, won't be any time soon, have to finish a patty wagstaff extra 300 first...will probably be my winter project.
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Bud, mine ships out on Monday the 26th in the yellow scheme. I got a brand new Saito 150S waiting for its home to arrive. Spoke to Dave Patrick, he tells me that it should fit entirely inside the cowl without cutting. Now that I saw your pictures can't wait to get mine!
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Your gonna love it orvel.....I had no clue mine was coming, was walking out the basement door to the driveway when the UPS guy pulled up. All you guy's who bought one will have to keep each other posted on the progress (picture's please) just can't get mine started right away....too many irons in the fire. [:o] Hopefully I can enjoy it while the snow falls this winter. :)

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
My white one showed up at the shop this morning. It's a scale model of a real full sized Super Cub built in 1994, a 150 HP version.
I plan on using an OS 160 Twin under the hood. It looks absolutely beautiful and the parts are still in those plastic bags! |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
I hear Patrick just placed first at the NATS with this bird. Anyone have any info on this?
Mine was shipped last week, may be here today. Really want to gas but have no idea what will fit. If the G26 is too big it really cuts down on selection. Fuji 32?? Any ideas. If I go glow really need some power for towing BIG sail planes. Thanks |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
His web site has the info about it...it was Greame Mears fully detailed cub, Dave flew it at top gun 2004
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
ordered mine yesterday in white, have os 160 gemeni for it did some home work on the eng they used and the saito 120 is 133mm high and the os 160 is 196 mm wide so doubling the saitos 133 to 266 leaves plentyof room in the cowl, and the cowl is not tapered.my only concern is that 2.0 hp is enough to fly the plane ok and have enough power to get out of trouble, or maybe into trouble, which seems to be the fate most of the time, my sons fly the planes, i just assemble and detail, thank heavens, some time they the planes can be repaired? those of you that have os 160 s do you need an on board glow? have mcdanels 472 but dont want to add the weight, hey lets keep adding to this thread for the super cub! thanks jim

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Bud Faulkner.
You said the G26 is too big for the cub. Which demension? Too tall, wide, long? Anyone used one of the BH Hanson G26s? He claims a more compact, lighter product and about a 30% performance increase over the standard G26. |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
The distance from the center of the cowl opening to the side of the cowl is a tad over 4 1/2" not much over though. The dimensions from the approx. location of the center of the cylinder of an RCS140 and the dim. from the beam mount to the top of the ignition cap when mounted (from the engine dimensions shown on the RCS web site) is 4 1/2" to the side of the cowl on the inside. The distance from the center of the shaft on the G26 is approx. 5" I checked it again last night. I don't remember the exact dim. just laid my tape on it and knew it was too big without cutting the cowl. It's obvious the inverted mount will not work either without cutting the bottom out of the cowl. There may be some out there who don't mind cutting but i'm too scale oriented. The RCS140 will just fit with a side mounted engine but if you want to stay with gas and consider the 140 I suggest you do your own math and not take my word for it. I'm still considering that engine if I stay with gas unless I get an awful good deal on a nice O.S. or Saito twin in the 1.20 to 1.50 range. Hope this makes sense.

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Got mine Monday. White version. Gonna put a scale 1976 paint version on mine. My H9 182 is beautiful and I love it, but this PA-18
absolutley takes the cake. This has got to be the nicest ARF I have ever seen. Not a flaw anywhere. Absolutley beautiful. Enjoy, Scott:D |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Scott,
What type of paint are you going to use....going to use the blue on white on mine. Bud |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Bud, Ive searched through some of my photos and iam going with avaits 1994 scheme, white with red trim and lite grey and red trim interior , make everything from blue construction foam, I have to find some info on the 160 as to tank place ment ,ect and I seen that Dick pette has one also, maybe and upcoming review is coming.and like you,I dont want to cut on the cowling, So your doing floats?wow thier a model in them selves , must be around 40 inches long. Iam thinking large bush wheels 5 or so inches, w,ell see! havent decited on what method to apply the new scheme, trim tape, paint ect been reading up on rustolium, coverite ect ,only want to do it once and not go back and redo or touch up, well read some more, I know Iam not useing laquar. hey got to go . thanks to all jim:D

Jim,
I tried the clear Lustre Kote paint on my H9 cub which has the same covering and it took real well so I may use it..still undecided. I have heard of some using PPG on Ultra Cote with good results. Not gonna rush...I don't want to go back and have to re-do anything either. As far as floats go I built mine for my unfinished BUSA 1/4 scale cub with a G38 but again i'm still undecided. My floats are 46" May make the DPM cub a land lubber with wheel pants. Lots of time yet for final decisions. I've used the blue foam for many years, hard to find but I used the 1-1/2 pound density and it was the polyurethane foam, the only one that will accept epoxy. Sanding it leaves little particles floating in the air and on your clothes, best to wear a mask. Keep us posted on your progress, especially the interior. Bud |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
I have one of this on order as well. I was going to use a 1.50 Saito in it. Any thoughts on a muffler. I was thinking about a slimline inverted pitts but they are pricey. Any other suggestions? I would like not to cut the cowl. Thanks
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Bud,
Thanks for the info. Looks like you killed my G26 idea, durn it. I don't know about the 140, thinking about a Satio twin. Plane arrived today. Not a wrinkle and just a fabulous piece of work. The manual is far and away the best I have ever seen. Wish he made some warbirds this size. Have a set of scale Wipline floats (48") and have been thinking of wheel floats for a long time. Still have not worked out the steering retract set up on the nose wheels. Gets real tricky. Also am going to add a door. Seems a shame not to have one on such a perfect scale plane like this. Thanks again. |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
DR.Pepper
YUP YUP on the door....thinking the same thing. Been reading some not so good posts on the 140 so decided to just stay with gas on my BUSA cub and order the OS160 twin for this one. Should have done that from the git go...gonna look nice with a twin under the hood. |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Got my DPM Super Cub today and all I can say is__ WOW! Super Indeed and by far the best looking quality ARF Cub in the market. I'm a traditionalist and got mine in the yellow scheme. Also tried the Saito 150S for fit inside the cowl and it fits perfectly with good clearance all around__ no surgery needed on this cowl except maybe a small hole at the bottom for the muffler. Bud, those floats look great! Are they from a kit? Plans? Scratch built? Please let me know, I also plan to get mine on floats at sometime in the future. Please keep us abreast of any modifications you have to make to fit them and the best way to install them.

Orvel,
They're Sea Commander floats heavily modified....There's more info on them on the seaplanes forum under hey nony..the're done. Posted so many picture's of them in the past the guy's are probably tired of looking at them but here's one more of them with my homemade scale brackets ;) Bud |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Bud,
Ok, you shot down my G26, now after looking at your floats I think I will burn mine. Geeez, how do some of you guys do this stuff? Looking at the Saitio 182 Twin, fit looks ok, and what a jewel to match the cub, what do you think? (forget the price tag, if the wife finds about this one I can trade it in on a trailer for rent). |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Orvel,
Should have put this on my last post to Bud. Rather than a muffler on a Saito 100 I used the flex pipe extension they sell. Works great, no muffler and the sound is about the same with a muffler, a little more throaty, not louder. How cool on a twin!!!!!!!! |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Bud, Your paint scheme is the exact same one that I am going to use. The only difference is that I will be using full size N numbers on the side of the fuse. I will be using a 2 part Epoxy system for paint. I am thinking about using a OS 120 III Pumped version. Plenty of power on a aircraft like this. Then again, a saito 180 would make this thing climb out like a home sick angel. Dave really did his homework on this one. The landing gear and struts are absolutley beautiful. Only thing that I can remotely complain about is that we will have to remove the lightning bolt and the N numbers. Dave told me at Joe Nall that the N numbers and lightning bolt would be included in the kit but would not be applied to the model. I just hope that they are decals and not ultracoat. Anybody know yet?

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Dr. Pepper and sj3cub,
So many engines to choose from, my fingers are about worn out searching the web for that perfect combination!! Lots of nice choices and now that i'm convinced a gasser won't fit well i've been looking at twins, Saito and O.S. and as far as the price tag, dr. pepper's got it right but I may have to keep the dog house I was about to give away! [X(] I requested no N numbers when I ordered mine but got them anyway except for the wing...they look like vinyl and a friend said he has removed vinyl numbers on planes and cleaned the surface with acetone...i've yet to try it but will be removing mine. I was going to use my ama number like this NC40403 but in searching real ones most seem to have no numbers on the fuse and only small numbers on the rudder....guess it all depends on location and when they were built because there are a few with the number on the fuse side. The traditional J3 cub was yellow and most super cubs with few exceptions were white with blue, green or red trim. I did find two yellow super cubs and both are seaplanes. sj3 cub, i'd be interested in what 2 part paint you're using and orvel I like the flex pipe idea, will be using the same on mine...still leaning toward the OS160 twin. Oh yeah...dr. pepper, thanks on the floats...you don't want to know, only took three years off and on to finish but i'm a patient rascal, guess that's why I build more than I fly. |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Hey guys, hate to name all that way but I would hunt and peck to much to name all. Ive went to the os 160 has the same hp requirments as the 2 strokes requirment from the eng list . this is buy for the best ive seen ever!!!, iam an old build it yourself and from scratch if need be, kinda guy, but arfing just helps out with wife thing, smelly what that noise??. anyway,I got mine yesterday and started on the landing gear, everything just drops into place, read the manuel, what a manuel, Iam pinning the firewall and triangle reenforcing the landing gear, Bud iam going cover the servos with the lower rear seat cushion hollowed out , I think???? looks like it will work.?? need to build a drop in skylite. cant remember where to get the hindges for the the door and window, maybe one of you guys can help, like piano!!. any way cant do floats no where to fly from water here ordnances dont allow it. so no floats for me. yes bud youve done your homework on foam, home depot here has the blue kind that sands nice and is messy but the sweeper hates the stuff! the rear head liner will be foam also just some carefull measuring, man this is what i like, the detail to make it look real, the hard part is done! will build may own tubler exhaust extenions from alu tubeing using os header pipes that come with the eng. stiil looking for the paint for the trim, thread is a little confuseing, just need the paint type and steps to get it to stay put , seems everone is wishing some paint was still made ect ect! dont want to go to trim sheets monocoat, but will if needed. boy cant wait to do the nav lites makinng those 1937 chevy tail lite housings again.and that wing edge is nice and thin. havent really havint got that far. better head to work thank all jim

Good idea Dr. Pepper, I think I'll try one of those flex pipes! Thanks
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Anybody considering dual servos for the elevator? I don't know about just using one per the instructions--although high torque! Comments?
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
I'm using the new futaba 3010 on the elavators. That should be enough afterall this is a cub not an extra. Good luck
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
BTW I should mention that I am using these on my GP soucy xtra and they work great
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
O.K. Where's all the progress photo's? I'm sure some of you have stopped drooling by now and dug in. :D

Jim, Nelson sells piano hinges.
http://www.nelsonhobby.com/piano.html Not true scale but whatever works. Bud |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
That's great orvel, I was supposed to get one free by ordering last december as advertised at that time but wasn't in the box. Let us know what it's like.
Forgot to mention i'm using Hi tech TS-70 metal gear servo's 106.7 oz. torque. A little overkill never hurts. Bud |
