It's a VP30 Perry. If you run with, you have to adjust the setting of the two carburators to obtain a good mixture. Without pump this engine don't run very well because the carburators position are too high on upper side of the engine. I have already two saito 182 fitted on 2 planes (Bearcat KMP) , it run great, never fail..And the noise is fantastic..
If you install the pump, take care when you connect the hose to the engine crankcase, always insert a "T" to let the air going outside. If you don't do that, you can damage the pump and the engine gasket by overpressure!

You have to use also an electronic ignitor on the 2 plugs. Easy to start without external plug batterie! And engine run easely at low rpm..

I think tower should provide this pump.

Dear friends, I'm planning to buy a t/f staggerwing. What gas engine will be the best for it?? Does the fuji 24cc has enough power/?? Do I have to jump to the 34cc?? Will both engine fit inside the cowl?? What do you think?
Thanks,
Alex

Can anyone suggest a good steerable tail wheel and manufactuer/source for a T/F Staggerwing? -Prefer a air system that can be fitted to the staggerwing with out major surgery. Presently have the Robart retracts with the the servo contolled retract. Thanks= Doug.

We used the ROB121 Robart Tail wheel Retract and the ROB165 Air Cylinder. An aluminum bracket was fabricated for mounting the cylinder to the tail wheel assembly and it slides into the existing tail wheel compartment. The only "simple" modification to the aircraft was removing the factory installed plastic tubing for the tail wheel rod that comes from the servo (the tubing, rod and servo are no longer needed). The pneumatic tail wheel assembly is a tight fit but works great and eliminates the need for a tail wheel servo and extra channel on radio transmitter. Let me know if interested in some pics of the pneumatic tail wheel project.

O.K. Gang: although I finished my Staggerwing back in June, its just now cool enough to be outside to tune and tweek the engine, Cool enough ! which means its only 105 out. I am using the OS 160 4 stroke twin.

Questions for those reading these posts that use this engine (If I remeber there are a couple) Mine seems a little sluggish on the top end.

Idol is fine at 2100 rpm, the book says rpm range is 2000 to 10,000. I am using a 18X8 Zinger and can only get 6100 top end

does this sound a little low to you guys, ???? especially for a 19 lb airplane

Hey Denis,

Good to hear from you. This thread has been really quiet lately. I've got two Gemini 1.60's, although neither of them are in this plane. One is in an Aeronca C-3 and the other is in a Monocoupe. 6,100 sounds way low to me. I believe you'd only approach the 10,000 rpm figure if you used the smallest prop in the specified range (15x8). With your 18x8 you should see rpm's in at least the 8,000 range. New engine or well broken in? Carb opening all the way? Nitro content of your fuel? I presume you've checked your tach with a fluorescent light and verified that it's reading correctly. It sounds like it is based on your readings at idle.

Paul or Wally cant remember which one you are: anyway ::

Really appreciate you responding as i know you have used these engines : so here we go

1. 10,000 I understand will only come up with the smaller prop: I was actually at least looking for 8,000 with my 18X8

2. Engine was used when I bought it off E-bay. I have taken it completly apart, replaced rings ect. it was very clean when it was apart, should be broken in if not very close

3. I also verified that carb opening was fully open ( because the way it sounds, is like its only about 2/3 open. But yeah its fully open

4 15% 4 stroke fuel used (morgan brand)

5. fluorescent light (very good question) as I did my final tach reading out in the street (not in my garage where I have several Fluoresent lights)

my concern at this point , could I have set the timing one notch off when I re-assembled the engine, ???

Denis

Good question on the timing. I guess anything is possible, but you might want to ask one of the engine gurus over at the OS engine forum to see what they think. Personally, I doubt it's a timing issue but I have no basis for that statement other than instinct. Based on everything you've told us so far, it sounds to me like you're losing fire on one cylinder at full throttle. Are you using an onboard glow driver? If you haven't tried it yet, you might see how it runs with both glow plugs powered from idle to WOT. Glow plugs are new OS type F, correct?

p.s. It's Paul. Wally is that crazy Texan. :)

RE: Top Flite Staggerwing

I've never seen 8000 rpm with an 18x8 prop on my OS 160 twin, with an 18x6 wood prop maybe.

knucklebutt 09-13-2009 08:26 AM

RE: Top Flite Staggerwing

Paul:

Yes to the on board glow: I also believe both cylinders are firing at full throttle, as they both ("feel") to be the same temp, (i dont have a temp gage.

Not using OS plugs but using "McCoy four stroke

and Steve: Thats the info I am looking for , you know with the 18X8 6100 might be all its gonna get, just wanted to pick Brains

Thanks Guys

Denis
