hey guys,just got a staggerwing and need some help.Im thinking a g-38 but worried about cutting the fire wall,is there any way around that,also will a 7 channel not be good if I used flaps and retrac.I use my 7 cap on a hellcat with flaps and retrac.and thays all I need.

I think if you search this thread you will find someone who has used the G-38. I went with the 160 twin. I use a 7 channel Futaba, with the proper mixing I got everything to work, Flaps/retracts and all.

O.K. gang Finally got the test flight in this morning (Monday) perfect weather, wind calm about 78 deg.

Here's the specs = Plane out to be 20 lbs, had to put 1 lb of weight just above the engine

using the O.S. 160 twin 4 stroke with a APC 17X8 prop, which gave me 8000 rpm

take off was o.k. tracked well (i have a little toe in) still need to work the rudder wouldn't stay straight bu its self

lift off was ahhh welll interesting I guess is the word. I always test with duel rates on, as I want to have too much and not too little

well the elevator was waaayyy to touchy as well as several deg of "down" trim was needed so you can imagine , it looked like a "porpise" up down up down !!!!!! also needed several clicks of "right" aileron. So it was up down left up down left (you get the picture)

Power was good "certainly not great, but at this point I'm comfortable with it. Makes scale flight speeds easy. Just have to be carefull NOT to get in any situtations where excess power is needed. I did not retract the gear, I usually dont for a first flight, but was pleanty busy for the first 3 or 4 minutes just to get it trimmed.

after trimmed flew very well, then!!!! (yeah here it comes) out of nowhere come a blast of hot air (no I'm not reffering to Wally) a 90 deg crosswind about 8 to 10 knots. Stuff like that happens here in the desert. So landing was awkward to say the least, no flaps, plenty "O" speed, used the whole runway, but successful non the less. Didn't get a second flight due to the wind. Future flights should be fine

Congratulations on the successful maiden flight! Sounds like the first few minutes were exciting. Sorry about the blast of hot air for the landing (LOL @ Wally). You'll find that you won't need nearly so much speed for landing once you've had some time to get comfortable with the flight envelope. Glad the 1.60 Gemini is adequate. There's a N.I.B. OS 2.40 Super Gemini for sale in the marketplace right now. I think that'd be an awesome match for the plane. Anyway, glad you finally got it in the air. Well done!

knucklebutt,sorry to hear the landing was not what you hoped for but aleast you didnt lose it.I read about the install of the g-38 on pg34 but was hoping to find some other way,I dont like cuting the firewall.Would also like to hear how the engine performed in this plane.also how did you do the flying wires with the turnbuckle in the middle of the wires.

Hey Fred: yeah the wires are really neat looking and easy: I use elastic beading cord you get from the craft store. I am actually on the way out to the flying field for round 2. This afternoon I will post close ups and details on how to do the wires

ok I will be looking for it.I like the flying wries have them on my super stearman,but have not recived my staggerwing yet so cant see how to do it and still be able to removed the wings.So are you happy with the power with the 160?

Lead or blocks of steel or brass bolted to the FW or on the motor mount. It looks ugly but when you put the cowling on it is a thing of beauty!! Everybody needs at least one Beechcraft in there fleet!!!

Fred : Bit of a long story: Tuesday would have been the second flight. Got to the flying field and discovered the the wheels/tires that I am using (Robart treaded 4" with foam inserts) were lop-sided due to being tied down in my trailer. They just are not made for a 20lb models and were bulging on the side, which made them rub on the landing gear legs, like really bad, like pull extreamly to the right. If I took them off and worked the rubber they would probably have straightened out, but I couldn't get them off cause good ole 'Denny" just about wealded them on with "locTite. Swear I'd never do that again . So home I went, Grinded the wheels off and ordered a set of DuBro 4" solid rubber.

Since my local hobby shop has now closed down (victim of the economy) I ordered from "Tower" which I received yesterday (Friday)

NOW !!! would you know it I ordered the only fricken set "O" wheels that DONT come in a pair, thats right I only got 1. Go figure !

ordered another (1) wheel should be here next tuesday EXCEPT I got "bloody" Jury Duty starting Monday

See Fred aren't you sorry you asked??? So round 2 should be some time next week, I'll certainy report in, I will also be posting pics of the flying wires

hey guys,my staggerwing should be here in a few days and I need some help picking an engine.I like the g-38 but dont like cutting the firewall,would like to go gas but need a side mount exhaust system,so what do you guys think is a good gasser for this plane?

Sirs, I,m still planning to buy a tf Staggerwing. The only thing that bother me is the engine. I will like to install a gas engine. I don´t want to have a hard time installing it. What gas engine do you reccomend me to use on it?? take a note, Iprefferd not to cut the cowl or the firewall..

Well Beechcraft fans, I just acquired a third Staggerwing. It's another Byron and looks like it needs a little cosmetic work but is otherwise in great shape. I may have to repaint it in the black-n-gold color scheme.

Sirs, what about the Evolution 26 GX gas engine?? Does any body knows if the evolution will fit inside the cowl, Any hard time installing it????

I'm running a 2.4 glow which is 40cc and it's not overpowered at all.
