Default Electric motor Sizes Needed??

Hi all,

Any of you that know me, know that I have done some gyro designing, building, & flying, but all with glow engines.

Could you guys give some idea of what would be the equivalent electric motors needed to replace the following sized glow engines?

Cox .049
Norvel .074
OS .15

This is for future designs. Don't get too excited as I won't likely bring one to Spring Hill in Feb. 05

Thanks,
Bob G

Bob,
I use a few electric motors and I am still pretty well confused most of the time as most manufactures have there own numbering systems.
You will here about speed 400's , 550's , 600's in can motors.. I use a few AXI brushless and they have all kinds of numbers on them..These are direct drive..I have 2 MPI brushless with gearbox that work fairly well. it's a 4025 with 6:1 gearing. All useing 3 cell lipoly batterys.
When I buy an AXI motor I call Hobby Lobby and ask what size do I need. They just sorta sell them for weight of model. Go to there web sites Bob and you can get more confused.. Good luck.

Cox 0.049 (baby bee?) = 100 watt motor, little axi, himaxx 2808 outrunner, brushless eflight 370, himax 2015
Tee Dee, norvel = 150 -200 watts, 2212-34 axi, himaxx 2812, eflight 400, himax 2025
Os15 - mini-ac's, aveox, bigger hackers, bigger himaxxs, kontronics
The kontronics 500 sets are equivalent to a .40.
There are many factors, mostly the electrics are capable of much bigger props making them very
suitable for gyro's. For example a 049 can turn a 6x4 or a 7x3, the little himax can turn a 9x5.
The thumbnail rule I have is 100 watts/pound of aircraft is plenty for gyros.

Bob,

I was flying the PTGyro with the Norvel .074 here in Florida and during the winter months it had plenty of power. However, when the heat index gets over 100 I couldn't sustain flight. I replaced the .074 with a AXI 2808/16 and have more than enough power. The only dis-advantage is the torque from the outrunner motor. You have to apply power gradually as the torque can roll the gyro on takeoff. I have also purchased the AXI 2820/12 for the PT25 gyro that I don't have built yet. For comparison I mounted this motor on an airplane that I'm flyin with twin speed 400's. The AXI 2820/12 far outperforms the two speed 400's. I'm also using 2000 mah lipo batteries.

Hope that helps. I'm new at this electric stuff also.

Phil
