For what it worth, I always put a rubber band around batteries after I charge tthem. I take the rubber band off when I put the battery in the plane. Helps me to remember which ones are charged.

A fire extinguisher wouldn't do anything but keep the fire from spreading. The batteries supply themselves with oxygen, so if you even put them in a completely sealed container, and it held up to the heat, the battery would still burn even if there was no oxygen in the container. Does that make sense? Your lucky you got it outside!

The main lesson from all this is: don't EVER leave charging packs unattended! Automatic scares me when it comes to chargers - it wil automatically destroy stuff.

For those that were following this thread, I found the instruction book on the Astro Flight Model 109 Charger.

This thing is scary... it says... paraphrasing a bit...

"During phase one (of three) the charger applies a full charge regardless of the battery voltage, as set by the dial, to the pack for three (3) minutes. During this time, the cell count will adjust to the proper number of cells..."

and "... If the battery is already fully charged, it "may" count too many cells, and begin to overcharge.... STOP AT ONCE!!! ..."

and "... It acts like a dumb charger during this first phase. This is necessary in order to be able to charge packs that have been discharged to a very low voltage."

That explains how it got to a 4-Cell chage rate, as the display indicated afterward.

You can bet I won't take my eyes off this charger again during that initial 3 minute phase...

CORRECTION! Earlier in this thread I stated:

The Triton actually goes up to 4 cells. I set it at 3 (11.1V) the first time and never changed it. This isn't the same as a "big, dumb, toggle switch with a lockout" as I suggested, but it's close. You have to deliberately go into the menu and change the setting in order to get a different cell count.

A solution for auto sensing cell count is using a charger that has a input plug set up for taps and the only way it can charge is thru each tap. If there are only 3 taps the charger only sees three cells. Both FMA and Common Sense use this setup. It's fool proof.

There is a ebay seller, selling esky honeybee cp2's and what he is shipping is a lithium ion charger, to charge a lithium polymer pack. I found out that another buyer, had his pack blow up. I since ordered a charger for lithium polymer. Question..is there that much difference between a lithium ion and lithium polymer pack?

I have the Triton Charger. It does not differintiate between Lio-ion and Lipoly. The lit implies they are the same, but is not specific. Everywhere they discuss it, they say "Lithuim-Ion/Lithium-Polymer" without differintiation. They must be so similar it doesn't matter.
