My engine shuts off when I push the throttle stick all the way down. I am afraid to have a dead stick when I am landing the plane for the first time, since it's difficult to tell if you are the end of the stick. Wouldn't it be better to adjust the throttle in a way that only the trim button all the way down shuts the engine off? This way, I can pull the sick all the way down on final and use the trim once the plane has landed.

Thats pretty standard for trim setting. You set your trim for a slightly high idle. If you come in to land with the throttle stick all the way down and its landing a little fast, you can trim down a little or go around and trim down on the go around. The trim is used by many as the throttle kill on glow engines.

Oh ya, practice dead sticks so you wont freak out WHEN it happens to you. I usually fly till I run out of fuel, so dead sticks are the norm for me. When I do have a dead stick low to the ground, it doesn't bother me at all.

If you have a computer radio it's easy to adjust this. Set your throttle so it closes all the way with the stick and then go to the sub-trim menu in your transmitter and slowly adjust the carb barrel so you see a sliver of an opening. Now with the throttle all the way down your engine will be at a slight idle..........keep the throttle trim neutral for this. Now go to the engine kill menu in your transmitter and set the switch you want to kill the engine with. Once you do this you can pull the throttle all the way down and the engine will continue to idle..........then pull or push the switch you assigned and the engine will stop. The methods to make these adjustments should be in your transmitter manual under sub-trim and engine-kill.

At this time, I have a plain vanilla FM radio. A JR 400.
I think I have to struggle adjusting the push rod until it works fine.

You do, you just set it up with the trim centered and the throttle opened a little. That way you can just use the trim to give you a faster idle then close it to kill the engine. Nothing wrong with a 4ch at all. You just don't have all the set up or programming in the bigger radios.

What I do when I am setting up the throttle is this. I put the trim all the way down, stick all the way down. Then I make sure the throttle barrel is closed and then I tighten up the throttle pushrod. After the mechanical linkage is set, then I move the trim to the center. This will normally give me a good idle speed and when I land I can move the trim down to the bottom to shut down the engine. I am using a DX-7 and it has throttle recovery on it. That means when I move the trim lever all the way down to kill the engine all I have to do is bump the trim lever up and it returns to the setting I had before.
