If you give the spackling plenty of time to dry...let ALL of the moisture get out before you seal it w/ Balsarite, you should be OK.
I have painted over water based spackling many times.
Not 100% on this but I think Balsarite is basically like Dope?

I have noticed the spackling appears to be dry underneath, but at the opening of plane where the motor sits, or another way the belly of the plane where the cowl would attach too, the spacklings seams to be drawing some of the oil/fuel. Origianlly the covering was attached to this area. In an earlier posting someone had mention to rub cornstarch on it. So I thought maybe I would go buy some corn starch and pile the starch in that area.

If you have engine oil on the area, you can also use covering heat gun to heat the area, the oil will come to the surface, and you can blot it off. Once you can't blot any more off, then use the cornstarch and let it set on the spot for a while, and when you remove it, it would have some more oil in it. The more oil you can remove before applying the balsarite the better off your replacement covering will stick. You may want to try and go over the area 3 or 4 times with the balsarite as it will also help to seal the surface from absorbing more oil in the future. I do this to my glow planes all around the engine compartment and under where the fuel tank goes. I have had a couple of times the bung on the fuel tank develop a leak, and there is a good quantity of fuel that can be absorbed by the balsa and ply structures in that area.
Good luck!

I may gotten ahead of the game. This is my first repair and I used spackling like reworking a car door so I have to remove some more on the bottom. I am using 400 paper to keep from removing more wood.
I will use the heat gun tonight, because I am going to make and attempt to replace the covering.
thanks timmy
