Default Silly Question: External Power Source - Jump Starter

Hi everyone,

This is quite a novice question, hence why I decided to post it here. I am looking for an external power source to bring to my field so I do not have to pop the hood of my car each time I want to charge a battery. I was wondering if this would do the trick:

http://blackanddecker.com/power-tools/JUS350B.aspx

It is on sale right now at my local hardware store and I think it would be perfect. I am not too sure how "350 instant-starting amps" differs from regular amps. Would this provide enough power to handle my charger and my starter for a whole day?

What do you think?

Thanks!

I bought one from the local auto store that is a 4-in-1 that has the air compressor (air retracts), utility light, power inverter and two 12-volt sockets (lighter sockets)...

It has worked great for power out at the flying field - and camping

Just look around for any jump starter that is on sale, they work great. They even work to jump start a car with a low battery, that has happened twice already.

I have one that I bought from Sears, oh, 10 years or so ago and it keeps on doing just what I bought it to do... start everything, including my car.. and operates the electric fuel pump (lazy me).

I just use a motorcycle battery, in a battery case/box.

Tested it out today. I can get about 5 full battery charges from this thing (11.1V 2200mAh lipo). I would assume it can run nitro starters all day too.

Good buy, highly recommended (looks cool too!)

Sounds like the one I bought.....actually two of them.........one for my car and one for the wife's. I've had to use it to start my car at the field because I left the doors open all day and ran down the battery. Radio Shack also has a thing that plugs into your cigarette lighter that has two banana female receptacles on the end to plug chargers in as well. I carry both of these and a charger in my car so I'm never without. Also.........if your field box battery is charged up you can use that.

I'm using a Powermaster battery pack. It has several plugs for all of your normal household type appliances, as well as a set of car starter alligator clips, which I use for my electric starter. It lasts forever on a single charge when using it when flying, but it weighs a lot, at least 25 pounds.

This kind of setup is very versatile, much more so than a standard "hobby battery", but it is much bulkier than the standard setup.

There is also the possibility, that like my power box, it will explode. Not sure what happened, but after flying yesterday I hit the switch "on" by accident, and there was a bang and lots of smoke. I have purchased a new, smaller one that is much lighter and hopefully wasn't made in a bomb factory!
