Default Here is the dummy with another dumb question

If I want to use an engine as a pusher, can I just turn the prop backwards. Thinking of a 80 4 stroke as a pusher on a seaplane. Don't yell and scream Just say yes or no

after you turn the engine around you still need a 'pusher' prop.

I guess I didn't know that they make pusher props that large. I have them on my foam jets but they are small 6" Have to look at Tower and see what they have.

Yup!! Tower has several. This has been a good day, I learned something. Gonna tell my wife that I am not as dumb as I was yesterday.[X(][X(]

so that means I would have a 6/10 instead of a 10/6

The pitch is just reverse of what a standard prop is the Dia, is the same but when you reverse a standard prop the pitch stays the same. You have to reverse the angle of the prop to make it a pusher.
Larry K
You still end up with a 10/6 but with reverse pitch

Geeze! What an great question.

The obvious solution is to get the crankshaft re-threaded to lH threads, put the engine on and run it in Reverse!!!!!!!!!!! wait for more.

Wow, you do come with doozies..............

I still remember when we had a "Pick On Ken" day every week. They were always fun. For us anyway.

The port timing on the crank is for a CW running engine. You can start one backward, but they dont run very well.

I have a reverse crank for one of my K&B 61's. This allows me to use a "normal" prop in the pusher mode. I've never heard of a reverse crank for any other brands but there may be one.

What a great thread.  I have just learned about the counter-rotating crankshaft from K&B.  I looked it up, and it is still available.  I've been wanting to build a Breezy style project as a camera platform for quite a while now.  The reason I have not is because of the limited selection of left-handed props.  I even have a K&B .61 that has been looking for a home.  New winter project is coming into focus.  You guys are great.

One, but not the only, problem with pushers is the fuel tank location and its effect on CG. If you can get an engine with a pump then the tank can often be located closer to the center of gravity and have less effect as the fuel burns not to mention putting a heavy engine in the tail. There are 4-strokes with pumps and a few pumps available for 2-strokes. I don't know if there are any K&B's still made with the built in pump (Perry) like my engines have. i bought 2 NIB on EBAY a while back and also found a cheap reverse crankshaft there.

Thanks for that tip. I can see that the location of the fuel tank and the fuel lines would have to be studied. What are the other problems?

Hi goirish
I have built and flown two types of pusher Canards over a period of 7-8 years, using OS46FX and AX engines and APC pusher props. An interesting point is that the engines tend to overheat while you are tuning them on the ground. It took me a while to realize that. Once I learned that feature, I replace the pusher prop with an identical "standard" prop and do all of the tuning. Then I put on the pusher prop and take off. I mount the fuel tank in the conventional location as close the the engine as possible, and then use a very small second tank much closer the the engine. The pluming from the muffler to the carb inlet is all in series. In this way there is never any hesitation. I like to be in the air withing 20 seconds of starting the engine to prevent overheating.

OhIdonno know. Ihad a Enya engine that would only run backwards.

Even my instructor at the time, didn't believe it and had the engine for a month trying to get it to run properly. The best he could do was get it to pop over the right a couple times and they it backfire and start runing backwards, pretty well i might add.

Some Enya's can be reversed by rotating front case. http://www.supercoolprops.com/articles/enya.php

Boy I learned this the hard way too!

A friend walked up with a temperature gun after seening me battling for hours with a pusher plane.

He took a head temp reading at the glow plug close to 380 degrees... I then knew what was happening.

Tuning with a normal prop first is a very good idea.
